Ziggy + Angel + Rain 11,306 October 31, 2016 Share October 31, 2016 (edited) Isn't Twilight about sparkly vampires? And Titanic wasn't a "romance film"; it was a semi-kinda-historically accurate (-ish) period piece revolving around a naval disaster that romance was needlessly shoehorned into. Those aren't the only two films with romance in them, by the way. Maybe give some romantic comedies a look-see. LeafFerret 3,382 October 31, 2016 Share October 31, 2016 (edited) I never watch those movies, they all practically have the same plot in all of them and use the same old cliches all the time, you don't even have to watch the movie to know what will happen in it. Gestum 2,493 October 31, 2016 Share October 31, 2016 No. Just because there's a few bad movies doesn't mean that the whole genre is horrible, like every genre there's good and bad movies.
ponykittylonelygirl 73 October 31, 2016 Share October 31, 2016 A well made romantic film is just that, well made. It's just unfortunate that so many bad films happen to be romance or romantic comedy films. It's because it's a popular and cheap genre to produce, so people will always make and buy, even if they're not good. 500 Days of Summer, Definitely Maybe and Silver Linings Playbook are all modern romantic movies with a slightly different take on the traditional narrative. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I hate action films, man in fast car with gun shooting aimlessly? Ugh. But I can admit there are some good action films out there (watched Deepwater Horizon a few weeks ago, not a traditional action as such but absolutely loved it!!) cmarston1 5,964 October 31, 2016 Share October 31, 2016 That's only two examples, so there isn't really enough for to come to a conclusion of you being right. With how big of a genre romance is, I can't say for certain.
Subscriber Denim&Venöm 20,473 November 4, 2016 Subscriber Share November 4, 2016 It is rather predictable. Guy/girl meet awkwardly. Get to know each other. Have some fun. Then something happens to make them be unhappy & part ways. They have realizations. They get back together through adversity. Roll credits w/ awful music.
KatonRyu 1,036 November 4, 2016 Share November 4, 2016 At first I thought this thread would be about romantic comedies. Those truly are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to movies since every single one of them has the exact same plot and jokes that were begging for death a million years ago but that just won't get put out of their misery. 'Normal' romantic movies, though, eh. Romance in a movie can work really well if it's done well. Mostly it isn't, but I wouldn't go as far as saying that every movie with romance in it is bad. Guest November 7, 2016 Share November 7, 2016 While I don't really enjoy the romance genre myself, I still wouldn't call its fans horrible people. They have their rights to enjoy the genre just like any other.
StormBlaze 993 November 7, 2016 Share November 7, 2016 (edited) umm theres more romance films out there than just Twilight and Titanic -_- tbh i actually enjoy Titanic ¬_¬ i have one guilty pleasure and that is this romance genre of films. I dont like ALL of them, im more partial to the Period settings and historical ones. two of those include, Atonement and Marie Antoinette. must be my unbringing, my Mums a huge fan of period dramas and i think thats rubbed off on me too. Ive yet to watch Poldark and the rest of Downton Abbey, but i tend to watch them alone as my BF doesnt like them lol. I think im attracted to the forbidden love stuff, you know, the Wealthy Family's Daughter wants the handsome stable hand etc etc. And the class difference in these stories also grabs my attention. Im a history geek and a sucker for traditional romance. pretty much any British romance film made in the 90s, and early 00s, I will watch. Especially if my fave actors are in it. edit: also Cold Mountain is one of my faves as well as the book. Im not so dawn to American romances, but this one I studied in College and I quite enjoyed the Civil War setting to it. I dont really know much about American history before the First World War. Merrypaws 71 November 7, 2016 Share November 7, 2016 In a word, no. If romance movies are bad it's not because they're romantic, it's because they're bad movies.
EpicEnergy 23,247 June 22, 2021 Share June 22, 2021 So your calling everyone who watches romance movies horrible people? That's an overgeneralization. Also, whether or not romance movies in general are horrible films is subjective and depends on the individual's personal tastes. 1 *totally not up to any shenanigans*
Administrator Sir Hugsalot 9,368 June 24, 2021 Administrator Share June 24, 2021 Nothing wrong with romantic movies or fans of these. Movies of every genre, just like music of every genre can be good or bad. Genre itself doesn't define the quality, only performance of those involved in the project does. Disliking certain types of entertainment is one thing and it is perfectly fine - outright deeming it bad and judging those who enjoy it is vile. 1 As one person I cannot change the world, but I can change the world of one person. TBD 17,274 June 24, 2021 Share June 24, 2021 I can name one movie to answer that. “Fifty shades of grays”. People would actually enjoyed watching abused relationship as porn- led me to question them. I only like romance movies if they’re like one of the classics, or if it’s tragic as Willian Shakespeare’s. Yeah I know some classics one may be very corny but it’s romantic in a way. Like it doesn’t feel force. Nowadays, romantic movies is horrible and very cringy. You’d get the same story for almost every one of them. Now romantic movies these days are either about sex, abused relationship for joy, sex, horrible sex jokes, and sex. ♪ "I practice every day to find some clever lines to say, to make the meaning come through"♪

Tbh picking 50 Shades of Gray as an example is like introducing someone to Devil May Cry franchise with 2nd game (spoiler alert: it's god awful and the rest are amazing games). honk friend 1,987 July 16, 2021 Share July 16, 2021 "Horrible people" what is with this wording? Unless you're watching snuff films there aren't really any genres that make you a horrible person for enjoying. And no, romance movies aren't bad. You're allowed to not like them but don't act like Twilight is representative of the entire genre and don't act like Titanic is just a terrible film. Also like, maybe watch something else like Casablanca or Brokeback Mountain. Some of the greatest stories ever told were romances.
