Holidays just seem senseless

Don't even get me started on Halloween (what's fun about being scared, or dressing up as a decaying corpse, or celebrating Satanic things? Why wait for one day out of the year to dress up, when there's 364 other days to?) But all the other holidays also. Why wait for one day out of the year to be thankful for what you have? To honor your mom and dad? To get together with family, or give gifts? Why do we need holidays to tell us what to do, when to do them?

So yeah, because it's so much fun. We like to feel this adrenaline rush. :P

Also, holidays are sometimes the only time when we can see our familys, because we all have busy lifes. On Holidays, most people don't work, so we go to our familys to say how much we love them. :)

If you don't like it fine by me. But don't ruin it for everybody else.

Halloween specifically I don't care for, but having a holiday can remind you about something worth remembering. It's not always easy - prior to my parents' divorce Christmas was a very unpleasant business, and most events that revolve around family have been tainted by that, but that's all the more reason for me to remember why it's important.

From a pragmatic standpoint, if one plans ahead then post-event sales can be a handy way to stock up on items at a significant discount (most notably around Christmas, but almost all holidays have a similar effect.) If you want to stock up on sweets, Halloween-themed confectioneries should be on sales within days, and some will keep for ages (not the cakes, obviously, but the Haribo should keep until Christmas at least.)

Most holidays, people are off work, so the other 364 days are unavailable to dress up in a scary costume or give gifts to people. It's good old fun and brings everyone together, and allows everyone to spend more time with those they love. But if thats your opinion then hey ho.

Life sucks. There are a lot of days that are just misery. So I am not against holidays at all. Days where we can just have fun or be with family, having a good time, having a good meal and it gives us something to look forward to. There are some holidays that I don't care about, sure, but other people do so whatever.

Holidays can be fun..though I only really just like two, Christmas and Halloween. But the only two things that seem to suck about holidays to me now is how it's mostly business and not really celebrating. The only other thing that would suck is if you work retail..say goodbye to holidays besides maybe Christmas.

The commercial natures of the holidays are certainly bullshit.

But there are a number of holidays that have deep significance and meaning if you are connected spiritually/emotionally to them.

Even if you aren't a christian, perhaps you can see how a holiday that celebrates Jesus dying for everyone's sins, and coming back to life would be something worth celebrating to those that believe it is true?

Or if your father was in the military, veterans day could be a cool time to reflect on that.

Of course, it makes very little sense to care deeply about a holiday if it is heavily commercialized and has no spiritual/emotional connection to you.  Unfortunately, a lot of people are pushy about holidays, as if EVERYONE should care, and that isn't healthy.

Halloween is fun, christmas is fun. I don't care if it's a ripoff of the norse christmas moved there to steal their thunder, it's still fun. And I can get them back for it by ignoring the jesus stuff, calling it xmas, and praying to santa claus to annoy people more.

My country has a lot of free days due to random religious holidays no one knows anything about, those are definitely senseless because nobody celebrates them. However, holidays that people do celebrate aren't, even if I don't enjoy most of them (with the exception of Christmas) they bring people together and have fun, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's pretty bad is when you're being forced to participate against your wishes though, but that's a problem with people and not the holiday itself.

Holidays make for great business opportunities. On average, businesses spend 40% of their marketing budgets for ads during November and December because of the hyped up holidays. These are the months customers throwaway spend money on themselves and on each other much more than any other. Everyone loves discounts ^.^

What's fun about being scared? I always ask myself that before reading a Goosebumps book. What's fun about dressing up as a decaying corpse? The dressing up part. There's a whole world of costumes than just zombies mate. Besides, zombie stuff is cool. What's fun about celebrating Satanic things?

I will agree with that, but even that can be turned into something good.

The idea of giving someone a present, is a sign of affection towards this particular person, be it friend, mother, father, wife, etc.

It really dosen't really matter what you give to them, it's just a symbol of you thinking and caring for someone. :)

Halloween is really the one holiday I do like. I like the supernatural, occult vibe around it and I like carving pumpkins. Dressing up isn't even a part of it for me. I think the Celtic tradition of Samhain is really interesting, too, although I've read conflicting stories as to how much it has to do with Halloween.

Christmas, though, I really don't like at all. I don't want to buy presents for people, and I return they have to get nothing for me, but somehow this arrangement seems to be unsatisfactory to my family. While I like the food during a Christmas dinner, I hate the forced cheerfulness. I'd much rather be at home than having to associate with a lot of people over pretty much nothing.

Mostly, holidays are good to get days off work. That's the best gift any holiday could possibly give.

Due to most businesses being closed on certain holidays, it gives families a chance to get together. I have family I only get to see once a year on Christmas.

And while I am not a Christian and I believe that religious holidays are bs (Jesus wasn't even born in December, people did not eat chocolate bunnies while Jesus became a zombie, etc.) I personally don't have a problem with their existence. I think having certain times to reflect on certain things is a good thing. Either way, these religious holidays have been turned into secular celebrations anyways (and that's not bad. Everyone has the choice to either uphold tradition, or to not.)

Holidays are just anniversaries. Saying that we're better off without them is like saying you and your spouse is better off not acknowledging the day you got married. Even if you aren't big on actual celebration and gift exchanges, it's all about putting time aside to spend time with loved ones. For nothing else, holidays give children a sense of time and fun things to do.

Holidays are arbitrary customs that have evolved over the years for corporations to squeeze billions of dollars out of the public, masquerading under the half-truth that people need a vacation once in a while.

There's no stopping that, though. You're better off enjoying Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, or what have you, with your loved ones.

Sometimes it's good to just not think about things.
