Unless it was purely part of the fantasy, season 7 seems to imply the changelings eating both nectar, and peanut butter sandwiches.

I had this exact question at that exact part of the episode. Are they still entirely love dependent or do they have a standard digestive system all of a sudden? I don't think we actually saw them eating anything at that party but I am not sure if any ponies were. That would answer the question straight away.

Don't forget that while the Sirens known as the Dazzlings feed off of negativity and hatred to increase their dark power and influence, they can get regular food; Sonata Dusk was excited for Taco Tuesday, after all!

I don't believe it's nessacary for Changelings to feed off of love anymore. Thorax even addressed this in part 2 of the Season 6 finale. "I think that when I made a few friends, I guess I've forgotten about the whole feeding thing!"

I always thought they could eat real food. They wouldn't be convincing if everything they shoved into their mouths while dining with their "emotional prey" just overflowed back out. 

 

Since Thorax brought up a "changeling gourd fest" and that seemed like it was referring to a tradition from before they metamorphosed into what they are now, I believe they needed both love and real food (and water) to survive.

In fact that pear fake AJ was eating in the finale pretty much shows they eat real food.

That's actually a really good question, I've never thought of this before but they used to eat love from living creatures, now what do they need to eat ?? I mean probably not real food but not love, they've been reformed so maybe...they eat...well the logic would be sadness but that doesn't make any sens...

I think you may have hit on something there. It's possible that changelings primarily use(d) love as a source of magical power and that they needed additional sustenance. They've certainly always been capable of eating, though that's not the same thing. It IS also possible that the lunch thing was all Twilight's idea and that changelings no longer need external sustenance (which was my original impression after the S6 finale).

Changelings are supposed to imitate other ponies.  Logically, if they couldn't eat this would be a total giveaway. I've always thought eating emotions is like vitamins for them -they need trace amounts to live but also need regular food.

Or maybe it's like drugs & Chrysalis is a tweaker jonesing for a fix.

As some one already pointed out.

They could always eat normal food. I would most likely think they actually NEED to eat. But maybe not.

They just always had a hunger for love energy. (It does not even state that they actually need it) Like.. they might just go into DT's.

 

Or maybe they required one and not the other. Like maybe they did not get anything from eating... but they always could.

I always liked the fanon interpretation that changelings could eat food, but it doesn't really sustain them very much, unlike love energy.
