Well, that's it, it's about time we should know about Sunny's family. With the show in it's (most likely) final two seasons, it's one of the final few fan mysteries yet unseen. Now all the Mane6 parents accounted for, Scootie's parents being neglectful and being mostly cared by two married aunts.... (S8 spoilers, including a leaked episode)

The episode next to the season finale will make the appearance of a dragon who claims he's Spike's father (even if it turns out to be false, that topic won't be brought upon most likely), and as many of us seen with the leaks, Starlight's father appears in S8.   

So with that, Sunny is the only one that feels like her family story isn't a priority. Sure, there's the upcoming Forgotten Friendship special focusing mainly on her, but there's no indication that she'll meet her family. I mean, one of the biggest fan wishes happens there, and known by the novel adaptation released months earlier, but if no one mentions a little hint of her family, that probably means they won't appear there. It's kinda concerning because the show is closing to it's end, and while many claim the EG will keep going for a while longer than it's four legged sister show, the fact that's it's closely tied-in is just to be worried

As much as people don't like it, Sunset did briefly mention her family in the 2014 Holiday Special in the IDW comics. She told Applejack that she wasn't very close to her family and that she hadn't seen them in a very long time. The canonicity of this comic can no doubt be questioned but it's something that even now continues to resonate with me because she brought it even though she didn't need to other than to make a point.

Should they eventually introduce her family, the big question that needs to be asked is, why haven't they tried to contact her after all this time?

Now that is a great question, why should it be Sunset's responsibility to reach out to her family? The phone always goes in two directions after all. 

Something must have happened in Sunset's past for her not to be close to the rest of her family, what event or event's that occurred to create the present situation I don't think will ever be known though, it's all up to speculation.

And it is more concerning that whoever gave her life, they don't even know their daughter is making herself home in another dimension...... AS AN ALIEN BIPEDAL ANIMAL  ...... USING PHONES, COMPUTERS, AND SHIT SO ALIEN FOR HORSES. I'd imagine a very interesting plot could happen if the human counterparts of Sunny's family see her, mistaking her from their actual missing daughter

On that same note, why didn't Celestia make contact with them on Sunset's behalf or even Twilight to let them know that she was okay?

I was always bothered that Celestia would send her pair of the journals to Twilight, just stuffed in a pile of other books. Yes, I know, plot convenience, but still...

The plot demanded that Twilight be given them but you'd think Celestia would have tried to deliver them in some manner to Sunset herself.

There's a lot of things about Sunset which still pique my curiosity, and this is a big one. Her relationship with her parents is obviously complicated at best, so there's clearly a lot of potential for drama there, and it's hard not to wonder 1. why she hasn't reached out to her parents, and 2. why her parents haven't tried to find her. There's a story there and I really hope we get to learn it.
