What is your opinion on VR?

It was pretty much the next motion controls but even more intrusive. Just another fad that wouldn't last that long, the high price point certainly didn't help either

I agree for the most part. I think Virtual Reality will be a game changer (pun not intended) within the decades or maybe centuries to come. However, with our current "primitive" technology, I don't see it going anywhere further.

From my very limited experience, VR didn’t seem much funner than Wii games and advanced arcade games. I’m going to wait until it develops and becomes so mainstream that it’s hard to ignore.

I don't think VR is for me and the high price tag doesn't make it any more endearing. To me, the VR headset is just a screen put close to your face. You still use a controller and stuff, so why don't you just sit closer to the TV? Doesn't really make too much sense to me.

I think the technology is interesting, but whether or not it goes the distance will depend on how expensive it is. 3D was a big thing with TVs for awhile but nobody bought them because they were too expensive and needed too much peripheral stuff to make them work, especially if you wanted to watch more than one movie over and over and over.

Gaming would benefit from a more immersive environment if they can get the technology right and keep the prices down. Right now it's biggest drawbacks are motion sickness and graphic limitations. Going VR makes games look really bad, graphically. But I imagine they can overcome that in time. They just need to keep people interested. And the most 'interesting' thing I can think of would be a realistic price tag.

The difference between a 3D TV and VR is too large to even compare the two. However, many companies are selling extremely cheap, pathetic versions of VR. Once people try these, and are unimpressed, they see no reason to buy an $800.00 version. I've tried a high-end VR once. It was an AMAZING experience. I could swear I was there. I could swear I was transported to the side of a mountain, or that I had a bow and arrow. But I still had to click buttons on sticks and stuff. It was weird. The problem lies in these two points: 1. Cost. 2. Despite the fact that VR is an amazing technology, and is unlike anyone has ever tried before (if they haven't done so), even the most hardcore of users always admit that a lot of work has to be done.

The companies that sell them are still trying to figure out the shape of the controllers that you use in your hands. (You could argue that "true VR" would require no hand controls, but we are a long way from that. Baby steps.) This shows that VR is still in its prototype phase.

But I agree with you. But another thing they will need is a reason for people to try VR. I get including VR versions of Skyrim and such, but there is no unique game on VR that is as nearly well developed as Skyrim or Horizon Zero Dawn.

I can't use it so I'm not a fan of it, but mainly because so many VR-only titles look quite cool and already have keyboard support so why not let us non-VR users play them too? I get it with the ones only supporting VR controllers but yeah, they're cutting themselves off from a nice big segment of buyers :(

It doesn't interest me very much right now but perhaps I'll try it in the future when it's cheaper and fleshed out a bit more. I get motion sickness easily though

Unless it will be just like Ready player one in the future, i dont care about it.

Don't expect that kind of technology to arrive within our lifetimes. :maud:

If you havt seen the movie, MINOR spoiler. it takes place in the year 2045, so we all might be around our 40's or 50's.

One of the Back to the Future installments predicted that in the year 2015, we would have flying cars, hoverboards, etc. Obviously, we don't have neither, and especially not the former. Just because something is predicted to occur in x amount of time, doesn't mean you should not take it with a pinch of salt. In terms of VR, anything can happen in 50 years. It might advance quickly enough to be accurate to the movie/book.  Or it could evolve much slower. Who knows? Perhaps VR could be abandoned in a decade?

In the mobile suit Gundam anime, humans living on Earth and in giant cylindrical habitats in outer space called "Space colonies", wage war with eachother. The 1st anime premiered in 1979, and construction of the first colonies began in the late 1990's. my dad doesnt like science fiction, with the exception of star wars, because he says that kind of stuff cant ever happen. depending on where technology takes us, i believe it could.

I'm not saying that what we see in Ready Player One is impossible, nor am I saying that it could not happen in 40-50 years. All I am saying is, "Don't get your hopes up. It could happen. But don't put all your eggs in one basket."

Personally, I would love to live in a virtual world as a fantasy-looking character. That is probably my biggest dream. I only fear that by the time the technology gets to the point that that is possible, I could be dead, or I would be too old and fragile to walk or anything.

And in case you didn't know... VR is on its last legs already. :( :/ The evidence supports this.

And Valve is one of the biggest companies behind the development of VR. But at the same time, they are a high unethical company. (Which company is ethical? I mean, really? Money is a necessary evil that affects us all.) *Coughs* Microtransactions *Coughs*

VR is nice. AR is going to be even more interesting though. Turn your back yard into the arena. See laser bolts streak through the air and explode on walls. Imagine what something like laser tag would be like. Suddenly you can have weapons that deal splash damage, ballistic physics, power-up items that you run up to and grab. Once it's seamless enough, it will do pretty much everything a holodeck could do, except create stuff that you can actually bump into.

I'm all for the work-aspect of VR too though. I wish I could work on SFM with it. Things would go sooooo much faster.

I'm having some fun with Nintendo Labo VR Kit that recently came out. However the real creative thing is that you're able to make your VR games. A steep learning curve to be sure, but once you get it, you can start making games, and maybe someday your experience with the VR Kit will get you into the Gaming Industry business. It's possible. I'm more player than maker, but those with creativity can have a blast experimenting with all the programming tools that make VR mini games possible.
