CANTERLOCK is cruise control for FRIENDSHIP.

If that's not magic, then what is? ^_^

Meanwhile, it would seem our little ponies have caught the attention of the ESRB...

They don't, however, appear to have established a rating for "Magic", and so the debate rages on...

I think the viewer is meant to see it first and know about it separately from the show, and it is assumed that the ponies will eventually discover in show why friendship=magic.

That's just my theory however, so it could be wrong. :P

Imagine if in season 3, there's an episode where Twilight or Pinkie turns their head to face the viewer and says "because we all know that this is My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" and slowly turn their head back. Mega 4th wall breaking.

I like how Lauren admitted that she wanted the show---or at least, the title---to be about "magic" while Hasbro wanted it to be about "friendship." So she split the difference and called it "Friendship is Magic."

Do it.

Anyway, back to Blue's mindtraps.

My vote goes to 'we need a vague theme for the show that is memorable, of which we'll then vaguely reference to sometimes, but never outright. That'll work, right?'

I mean, in fact, to me it'd be corny if they outright said it, and it works better as a vague theme. It already renders me haplessly producing popped kernels of corn on the floor when they say 'my little ponies' all the time. But in reality, apparently, friendship and magic are closely related. Your magic lacks power without ZE FRIENDSHIPS, and probably vice-versa.

I know... it drives me insane every time somepony says "my little ponies" in show... I don't know why... I think I'd just kinda be like  if they said Friendship is Magic.. unless maybe it's the last episode ever and they say it at the very end or something.

Do they really have to say it?

I don't understand why they have to mention it as long as they follow the theme. Some books have a title that the characters never mention in the book. For example, I read a book called Sailor on the Seas of Fate but none of the character actually mentioned "We are sailors on the sea of fate..."

Sometimes titles are just for letting the audience or readers know what they are reading/watching.

It's called a "Title Drop".

It happens more often than you think. Every Lord of the Rings movie for example.

Title drops usually aren't very desirable, though. LOTR did a good job by being subtle with it... but I'm with Ashley in that it makes me uncomfortable whenever they say "my little ponies." That in itself is a title drop. I'm not sure whether to see it as a clever way to break the fourth wall, or as an attempt to remind you to go buy another figurine...

In any case, if friendship is magic, then a vital part of friendship is the magic that goes with it. It's just circular thinking. And if there is a magic component of friendship, one could say that all friendship is magic, but not all magic is friendship......

...This thread just derped my brain for the night.

Mind=blown.

When did this blasphemous excuse for a topic come into existence? The creator needs to perish, as he is ruining our innocence by pointing out all flaws in the show!

Friendship is magic. It's one of the most powerful things in the universe. Besides Twilight's magic of course. :)

The show doesn't really have to state it. The ponies friendship is like magic, which brings up the title. Their magic is friendship, or they're friendship is magic.

I think you get the point....

 Hmmm... it appears that the show's title is trolling our minds. Wonder who came up with it?

The name of the show is translated as Friendship is magicAL in my language. But afaik, magic can also work as an adverb. So maybe they are refering to friendship being something magical, but not magic itself. But I gotta admit I also came across that idea. Afterall, everypony except from Twilight can't perform magic (If we don't see Twitcha-twitch sense and sonic rainbow as magical act), yet they sure are friendly.
