irobern2857 95 July 27, 2012 Share July 27, 2012 (edited) Honestly, if all you think 3 words is all that is needed for posts on a forum-based RP, you really aren't doing it right. I'm not saying that 3 words for all of them but there are some select times when you just need to get your point across or to make a vote in the group. i think there should be a minimum amount of characters but i think for RPs it should be more around 50-75, you can always say more. maybe make its so that in RPs that are private the creator can set the minimum based on group desires. i would also like to point out that through all the posts that i have put on this subject non were directly critical, but just my personal opinion. by smashing down my remarks and trying to stop my additions to the discussion you are counter acting the point of the minimums in the first place. Black Star 62 August 1, 2012 Share August 1, 2012 I think when people post threads they should be able to choose whether they want the character limit or not. That way if they are asking a yes or no question people don't have to spam crap to reach the 100 character limit. Zoop 8,384 August 1, 2012 Author Share August 1, 2012 I think when people post threads they should be able to choose whether they want the character limit or not. That way if they are asking a yes or no question people don't have to spam crap to reach the 100 character limit. They do have that option - the boards in Cloudsdale lack the minimum all together. If you have a thread that does not lend itself well to posts that meet the minimum, you can always toss it into General Silliness. That's the point of the board, after all - to give threads of that sort a comfortable home.
Crispy 5,563 August 1, 2012 Share August 1, 2012 Back in this thread to report a bug, maybe. Twice today I've bypassed the limit on accident because the counter in the bottom right corner of the post didn't appear. I don't know if this is just my home computer being silly (as the counter loads when the full background finishes loading) or a legit bug, but it happened. 1 GET IN THE PIT On 8/23/2012 at 1:54 AM, Djenty said: ON MLP 4UMS ERRYTHIN IS SRS

Toastypk 923 August 1, 2012 Share August 1, 2012 (edited) I don't really like this. There's plenty of otherwise fine posts people make, me included, that aren't 100 characters. Obviously you dont want one or two word posts, but often there will be instances where something that's not quite 100 characters is ok and it isn't doing anything bad. Then you have to try to find words with extra letters, or add extra words, and it just feels hugely artificial and fake, and I really don't like it. This post obviously isn't one of those, but there are plenty that are short that aren't bad. What about someone replying to a post where they're pointing out a mistake someone's made, and they say something like "Oh, sorry about that, yeah, I must have meant something different." That's fine. But that's not the right amount. So someone has to insert words or do awkward additions, trying to make it bigger, and it's annoying. There's a lot of instances where a short post isn't doing anything wrong. Edited August 1, 2012 by Toastypk

Fghik 360 August 9, 2012 Share August 9, 2012 (edited) Something odd just happened while I was posting on another thread:The thread was made only a little bit before I posted...But it said I only needed 0 characters? I came to post here to mention it (and to see if you weren't just removing this feature,) and the character count was normal again.I made sure to get over 100 characters anyway, because I don't want a ban or anything; but this was really odd. Dark Qiviut 22,393 August 9, 2012 Share August 9, 2012 (edited) Edit: Yeah, the thread was made just before I posted: http://mlpforums.com...io/#entry652270 The reason you see zero characters as the minimum there is because you posted in the Forum Lounge (previously named General Silliness) section. The Forum Lounge is in the Cloudesdale Coliseum section, so the character minimum is turned off there. Java Jive 440 August 9, 2012 Share August 9, 2012 I can respect the underlying thought that a character minimum forces one to put some thought into his/her message, no problem. The majority of messages should naturally add to a conversation. However, there have been a number of situations in the past where i have made quite an elaborate post that someone had a question about or whatever. all i needed to reply with was a simple correction or answer. In similiar situations now i find myself forced at times to cross that 100 character mark while it isnt necessary at that point, needlessly making an remark that doesnt add anything. Good intention was put into this, ofcourse. It's not practical for every single situation however. I'll leave it at that. 2 Let's go downtown. Yellow Diamond 7,569 August 11, 2012 Share August 11, 2012 I hate to do this, but need I remind folks that attempting to bypass the character limit is frowned upon? Do not try to fill the space of 100 characters with nonsense. Furthermore, a little more courtesy would be appreciated. Making statements at the "end" of posts, such as "lol stupid character limit!!!!", is both unnecessary and rude. Reaching 100 characters in a post is fairly simple; so long as it is in the rules, every member is subject to the same limit. The bottom line: don't break the rules. And if you can't help yourself, at least do not be a jerk about it. Thank you for your time. 9 Domine, tu omnia nosti, tu scis quia amo te. Sakamoto 103 August 11, 2012 Share August 11, 2012 So... basically you guys make this minimum character stuff to "increase quality" and "reduce spam", eh? Honestly this will only reduce instant spam, irritate some people, making things generally hard for us short-tempered people, but the lengthy spam and stupid posts will remain the same. Another bad news for you, we got a whole set of wacky characters that can increase this counter and be invisible at the same time! Just hold your alt button and press some certain sets of numbers! What are these sets of numbers you ask? Just google it up for yourself Thanks for my Bon Bon for the awsum sig
Lillia 69 August 11, 2012 Share August 11, 2012 Awwwwww... I'm really going to miss posting some reaction images that are able to speak for themselves and don't need them no stinkin' words to boost 'em. But hey. Your guys' forum, right? I can always make my own forum if I want to make my own rules! And then nobody will visit it because it won't be as cool! HUZZAH! I still anticipate lots of useless words (read: modern attempts at poetry XD) from people who don't really want to post anything meaningful and just want to push their silly cat videos. Time will tell. Maybe I'll be wrong. I hope I am. 1 The Most Misunderstood Mare...

We're trying to improve the overall quality of the role-play here by increasing the amount of thought that people have to put into their post when posting. We encourage people to be descriptive, and expand on emotions. if you as a person feel some sort of emotion when a response is made to one of your characters. Put that response into the post. The Who, What, where, why. and when approach works just as well in the Role-play world as anywhere else. Perhaps better because you start thinking of different things and different traits that your character may have. This will not only very easily meet a 200 character minimum in the roleplay section, but help increase the over all quality of the post. Not-to-mention it adds a whole new level of fun to the Role-play because instead of just posting as a character, you become the character that you're posting for. Ice Storm 1,020 August 13, 2012 Share August 13, 2012 the thing is I was the 4th person to say that im comeing with so all that i had to do was just go there was no elaborate detail needed they just needed to know that i was there. Keep in mind, the reason that the limit is higher in the Role-Play section is because we have higher standards there. Posts there should require more thought, as in Octavia's hall and the Life Advice sections. There's always room for detail that helps flesh out the personality of a character regardless of whether or not you're just walking in a room. Perhaps you could notice something that others hadn't noticed in the area, also expanding on thoughts, or previous emotions. Also, just simply rewording something can easily meet the character minimum. "Yes Ma'am" Usaf finished a few bites of his food and got up from the table and walked with the rest of the group to over to the armory. "Yes Ma'am," Usaf commented as he finished what bit of his meal was left. He got up from the table and made his way over to where the rest of the group was located in order to grab his equipment and prepare for what was to come. That says the exact same thing. Just worded slightly different and that is 228 characters. Also, punctuation does count towards the character minimum so using proper grammar and punctuation will also help with meeting the character minimum. As I said, the easiest way to reach the minimum, is to be the character. The entire point of Role-playing is to pretend you are your creation. Interactions with the environment of the role-play are just as important as interactions with others. 1 Princess Luna is best pony Avid Twilicorn Supporter

FruitRiver 355 August 24, 2012 Share August 24, 2012 (ugh I wrote a long post and pressed backspace!) Sorry, but I think this is a pretty annoying rule. I mean, I DO think there should be a limit, but maybe 50? Its just been really annoying me lately. Not every topic needs 100 letters, I know 100 really isnt that much, but it can be a lot when theres not much else you can say. Say the topic is: What is your favorite CMC? Even this isnt enough: Sweetiebelle is my favorite! I love her cute high pitched voice and swirly adorable hair! (89 chars.) I dont mind it sometimes, when the topic youd want to describe more. (Something like, Whats your favorite think about MLP FIM? Youd want to say whats your favorite and why) But when its something simple, you really dont know what else you can add (Like, whats your favorite MLP quote? I could say "RARITY CATCH ME!" (not really my fav but XD) then maybe I could say "I think its the funniest quote! I love pinkie pie!" What more could I really add? Its not like I want to be like: "Rarity catch me" is my favorite quote because it involves two of my favorite characters, Rarity, and Pinkie pie, the one con is it did not include Applejack, she would have made it a masterpiece." Not trying to be offensive, just think it should be shorter. (wow, maybe it isnt so hard, look at this long post lol!)
