In what way do you break brony stereotypes?

BMO

Recommended Posts

I'm thin, athletic, have RL social skills (despite being relatively introverted, I am quite capable of making new acquaintances and friends). I have no mental, physical, or social handicaps or other disabilities. I only have a couple small pieces of MLP merchandise (I'm not obsessive, despite my absolute love for the characters and show as a whole). I have not kissed my RD Funko figurine at all. I despise Fanfics. I don't have much interest in BronyCons. I'm relatively religious e.g. I still have my beliefs, but haven't been to church in a while (most of the bronies I encounter here seem to be more atheistic or agnostic). Oh, and I don't own a fedora...haha.

I know I have caught at least a dozen people off-guard when they found out I'm a brony since I didn't fit the stereotypes they had heard about and otherwise expected.

Well.. I'm female, sporty, tomboy and self-confident. Love killing zombies and playing various competitive, aggressive games.. Cute ponies and rainbows isn't something people normally expect me to be into.

Blowin' all the minds of my peers..

I've seen people stereotype bronies as fat ugly creepy neckbeard's who are autistic and love wearing fedoras and probably fap to ponies.

They can not be more wrong, I 100% break that stereotype lol.

Well, I'm not a fat, fedora-wearing autistic neckbeard pedophile irl. I don't jerk off to pony porn everyday (sure I might look at the r34, but most of it is terrible anyways). I don't even use a pony profile pic (sometimes I might, but not frequently). I'm usually on my iPod or iPad playing Brave Frontier, or playing Call of Duty, or whatever. Well you all know I'm just a 15-year-old boy with a future and not some creepy neckbeard online.

Edit: This is the longest reply I've ever done (probably).

I hear rumors that a lot of people think bronies are creepy old guys that like MLP. I think that's a load of bull, plus, I'm a girl, and I'm 23. Though I'm not a teenager like many of the people on this forum, I'm still fairly young.

Last i checked, bronies arent supposed to be into classic cars, but that is a big part of who i am, i even have one im working on. They aren't supposed to have jobs either, but i have 2 part time jobs.

Also, im 22, i do have friends, am not obese, the only hat I wear is a baseball cap with the Dodge ram logo.

Well, I am skinny, healthy, social and in a great, meaningful, and healthy relationship. I am into a lot more things than JUST MLP and dont obsess over it. :)

Most people think a brony cant seem to get any of those for some reason XD

Well, I'm a girl. I'm not embarassed about liking the show even though none of my friends like it.

I don't ship any characters or care about that sort of thing. I don't write/read fanfics and i don't like AUs.

Hm...

What other stereotypes are there?

I'm 20, work-out three times a week, hardly watch the show and think a lot of the fans are annoying. I'm not a basement dweller and I get out pretty often, plus I have the coolest job in the world which is playing movies at the local cinema. I think that breaks the stereotype pretty much.

This is going to be a hard question to answer directly because I DO fulfill most of the "Brony stereotype". However because whatever ignorant person originally said all those things did so as an insult, I'm going to point out how being that criteria of the stereotype is NOT always a bad thing!

1) Gay.

I am mostly gay (might be bisexual, but I'll need to know more) and I'm not hurting anyone. Having gay fantasies (not all the time, mind you) isn't hurting anyone. Using gay as an insult instead of just simply stating the person's simply attracted to the same sex is just mean!

2) 30 years old/parents' basement dweller

I'm 24 now and technically my parents' place don't have a basement, so you can't call me a basement dweller! LOL! With the economy, it's hard to find my own place. I need to find a part-time job first!

3) Neckbeard.

Being ticklish, I don't shave as often as I do. And even when I do, it's difficult for me to shave all hairs off my neck, so I try my best to keep it short. Having a neckbeard may be socially unacceptable in some high-class places, but having one doesn't kill another person.

4) Overweight/Creepy/Bad Hygiene.

I'm actually skinny with little muscle build. I'll admit I keep forgetting to brush my teeth as often as I should, but I do make a habit of showering regularly. I don't know what the original insult meant by "creepy", so I can't answer that.

5) Autistic.

I am autistic with Asperger's Syndrome and being autistic does NOT mean we're stupid. We just have greater difficulty than non-autistic when it comes to communicating and socializing. Our interests are limited, but the advantage is that we're more likely to know/recall a lot more about said interest than non-autistic fans of the same interest. If you want Tvtropes description of it, read this spoiler box

Narrowly defined interests. One of their more obvious traits. People with AS tend to build up a lot of knowledge about their interests, which run the gamut of... well, everything. Some people are interested in things that are age-appropriate, some will be interested in things that either are viewed as "too old" or "too young" for them. Some people will be interested in things that many people are interested in, others will find obscure interests. Interests can also change from time to time – some end up defining their lives with a certain interest, while others may change it every other week, but while they are into one thing, be passionately so. Some people have one obsessive hobby and then 'sub-hobbies'. For example, their obsessive hobby is writing, but this is made less obvious by the way that they have in the past obsessed over Transformers, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sylvanian Families, and even add new fandoms to the rotation, and so end up compiling a great deal of trivia and expensive collectibles about ALL these fandoms, but what all the fandoms have in common is that they intensely enjoy writing about them.
An Aspie: "I find fire extinguishers fascinating. Thus I assumed you did too. There's no need to be polite; I'd tell you if you were boring me."

There actually are some nice pages about High-Functioning Autism and Asperger Syndrome from TvTropes if you're interested.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/UsefulNotes/AspergerSyndrome

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/UsefulNotes/HighFunctioningAutism

6) Virgin.

Well, maybe I don't want a girlfriend. Whoever implies that being a virgin prevents you from being a real man needs to get with the 21 century! Not everyone (Man or Woman) has to have sex and children.

7) Anti-social.

That's such a huge myth! I'm actually introvert, so I don't interact with people in person as much as extroverts do. I do meet up with other people regularly.

So, yes, while I do mostly match the "characteristics" of the "brony stereotype" I'm actually in the minority! Just because I fulfill them doesn't mean all us Bronies are like that!

Here goes:

- I'm not obese.

- I'm not a 40 year-old virgin.

- I don't live in my parents' basement.

- I am not a pedophile and do not commit bestiality/am not interested in zoophilia.

- I do not clop (masturbate to ponies).

- I do not have a neckbeard.

- I am not an autist. (Who's to say this is a bad thing in all cases, anyways? Autistic savants do exist.)

- I am not creepy. (at least, I like to think so)

However:

- I can't say I'm not gay. As embarrassing as it is to admit this, I am sexually confused. (Do I seem young saying this?)

- Check my privilege; I am a white male.

- I am very introverted.

- People find me to be annoying (personally, I've no clue why)

- I am a "gamer" as much as I hate to use titles, but I'm not a "xxMLGxx FaZe tR1cKsh0TT3r" (in the most comedic way possible).

Well like someone said earlier I also have a short fuse and a rather large tenet . I also like shows that most haters wouldn't expect a brony to watch .( family guy , South Park etc ).

I break Brony stereotypes by not actually being a Brony.  "Whaaaaaaaat?!  My mind = blown!"  Don't think about it.  It makes more sense if you don't think about it.

By not personally identifying as a Brony, I evade all contextual stereotyping fundamentally reliant upon that particular label. x3  I discouraged anyone from thinking about it, though.  For their own safety.

- I'm (mostly but biologically) female

- I have a job

- I like the previous gens of MLP and collect them

- Skinnier than a broom on a diet.

- I don't live with my parents. I live with my dog.

- I don't whack it to ponies. Being asexual I don't whack it to anything.

- I do have other hobbies and interests other than MLP that run more academic. Would you like to hear all about the evolution of classism and geographical prejudice in the 1930s Western Exodus?

- "Love and tolerance" is an empty overused meme and I take nobody who says this seriously.

- I can socialize with what society considers regular human beings. Gold star for me.

From all the negative brony stereotypes I know of I can say that:

-I'm not obese

-I don't treat MLP like it's a religion/obsess over it constantly

-I'm not a furry

-I'm not a 30-40 year old living in my mothers basement (I'm 13 )

-I'm not a pedophile

-I'm not creepy (imo)

-I'm active (though tbh that's only because I'm forced to be)

-I don't wear fedoras

OwO what's this?

  • I'm not autistic
  • I do not wear fedoras
  • I'm no way near a pedophile, as I am totally against it
  • I'm not that creepy
  • I'm 17 years old
  • I'm underweight
  • I'm far from being a furry
  • I'm know what is reality
  • I leave my house for school

So yeah, I break a lot of stereotypes at once

Break?...BREAK?!?!

You loco in the coco?

Gurl! I LIVE the Stereotypes! I have fully replaced my Tshirt collection with MLP Swag, got Rarity and EQgirls stickers all over my Laptop and Dazzling, Etsy made buttons on my hat.

I go yearly to Bronycon, date a fine Pegasister, and have six differnt MLP themed...ok RARITY themed Tattoos.

I much rather embrace what Ive been since 1989, A Brony, and be proud of the fact I still own the "Glory" Uniocorn toy ive played with since i was 6.

Lets see how else am I horrible example of this fandom, OH! I also write fanfiction!!! Hmmm, oh! oh! Half the songs on my phone are MLP themed dubstep remixs.

I don't mean to toot my own horn, but lots of people think Bronies are ugly, lifeless people, right?

Well, I'm attractive (again, don't mean to be conceited!), and I certainly do have a life out of the show! :D
