Strange Pet Behaviours

Recommended Posts

So, we got this new dog from the shelter. He's 7 years old (the owners didn't want him anymore), and he's overly friendly. He pretty much acted as if he's lived with us for years when we first brought him home. Overall, he's just a sweetheart, but that's not what this topic's about.

The main thing I wanted to share was this strange habit my new dog seems to partake in. As a Pomeranian and Chihuahua mix, he's pretty subject to be a dog that licks the heck out of people (and also barks, which he doesn't thankfully). He does, but what really gets me is WHERE he licks. When I hold him, he typically goes for the inside of my elbow. And then whenever I wear something that has no sleeves, he'll go after my armpit. :o It's freaky! And gross! He ONLY goes for these spots, too. It's just... idonteven..

I'm just curious; does anyone else have any pets that just do... weird things? I'm going to assume that there's some out there.

Yea my dog does the exact same thing.

It's cause of the salt in your sweat which oddly enough dogs (animals) love.

I suggest you train him not to do it cause it can make him quite sick and as you said its gross.

Could be worse thou i know people who's dogs go for..other parts

When my cat walks up to his water bowl, he paws at it, sort of like checking if it's water or full, at least that's what I think. If it is, then it's just old animal instinct.

The only thing we don't like about this is he will get water everywhere when he 'paws' at it.

Overly sweaty...? Watch out on a really hot day where your sweaty face will be washed with dog slobber

Maybe the dog has been licking those parts many times before. He should have already been trained if it made him sick... Unless the previous owners didn't care :( .

Cute and gross. Better than being licked by a fatass bulldog

Haha my cat actually plays FETCH. I'll throw him one of those super soaker balls, he'll run after it, and bring it back. He drinks out of the toilet too! I think one time somebody rang the doorbell and he started pawwing on the door and meowing. I have strange pets...

My cat, she picks up her food bowl with her mouth, carries it upstairs, and DROPS THE BOWL IN THE TOILET.

Whether this is true or not, I found it extremely hilarious.

my mom's cat goes down the stairs on her head and never lands on her feet (no coordination)

My mother's cat can hardly walk across the room without almost tripping and falling. It's adorable, but also kind of pathetic. She can't even follow a feather toy if you move it about... 0.00482 km/h. She's intelligent.

Same here. She acts more like a dog than a cat. Even likes to chase squirrels and dig holes in my backyard

My dog opens doors, not too strange, but he taught my other dog to open doors too. Like, showed her how and she kept trying till she made it.

Brushing your hair is for people who care and someone who cares is not I, I'll jump off a bridge and then fill up your fridge,
and best pony is Fluttershy.

Her face is still blushing and she is still eating the pasta.

That's probably dogs, LOVE salt. And sweat is where salt is. So it makes no difference in why he licks there than anywhere else. If you have anymore questions just message me. I'm an animal fanatic and I know LOTS about animals. =]

Another thing I remember now..

My cat (who has passed away now...) used to eat all the dog food, but would refuse to drink the dogs' water from their water bowl. She also used to play with the handle side of the feather toy we had for her, and hated the actual feathers.

There's a lot of scent held between your elbow and your armpit. It's probably just the spots he likes best. It probably wont make him sick, though. Dogs lick/eat a lot worse stuff.... poop for example. Get advice from a professional if it really worries you or you can try to find a dog training center and they'll help you deter his adoration of your elbow/armpit.

Yikes, she still ate her own food, right? Because cats need taurine. Anyway, was she the dominate animal in the house or dislike the dog in anyway? I can imagine she ate the dog's food because she had jealousy/dominance issues. Or she was a fatty kitty who ate because someone left food in the dog's bowl. Nomnom.

Oh, she was definitely a fatty kitty. And yes, she ate her own food as well. She ate... ALL THE FOOD.

This is absolutely true. The crease of the elbow and under the arm are verycommon places for sweat to pool on the body. Animals love salt (Hence why you give horses and hamsters and rabbits salt licks) and if they smell the salt in your sweat, they'll lick it. Under the arm? Yuck, if you don't like it, teach him not to do it. There are easy ways to make him understand that's not something to do.

My dog Pumpkin (Who was put to sleep when I was about 9 :(, a Lhasa Apso) used to rip hair ties out of people's hair. She'd rip it out when you sat on the couch. It's safe to say I always wore my hair 'Indian Style' most of the time, unless I was going out.

My guinea pigs love their cage all I have to do is put one of them on the ground even if im still petting them they'll go to their cage and hop in inside their cage no matter where in the house they are. Also they never go outside their cage even if I tempt them with their favorite food. I don't even have the door for the cage on the cage in order to keep them inside the cage as they never try to escape it and the door blocks the view of the guinea pigs when I have it on the cage.

When my piggies were little, I used to set their cages on the floor, open the cage door and let them wander around the spare bedroom. It didn't have anything in it but some old furniture, but it made it an adventure for the cavies. They'd wander the room following each other (1st piggie had the 2nd's nose firmly behind them, because they have poor eyesight) and explore everything. I'd leave things around for them to find, veggie treats, toys, toiletpaper rolls and papertowel rolls. They usually nibbled on paper plates, too. They also poo'd of course, but it's like rabbit poo and can be vacuumed or swept easily. And when they got tired of it, they returned to their cage and took a nap in their pigloo.

Now they're big boys and we live in a different apartment with different rules in a different state, so no more running around freely... but they have a far bigger home made of coroplast.

Sometimes my Charizard won't listen to me. Which is really wired because I got all the gym badges and beat the Pokemon league. At least Pikachu listens to me.

Oh, they're still with me! We just don't have a safe empty space for them to run around in anymore, because they'll chew wires. Coroplast is corrugated plastic sheets; the stuff they make signs with. You can turn the big ones into a "cage" for the piggies to run around in. It's much better, much bigger, and much more open. Also you can get really clever with the designs and create multiple levels with carpeted ramps and wooden supports. And to keep them enclosed, you use these organizer cubes (I got mine at Target) with small wire grids. They come in square panels that you put together yourself with plastic joints.

My piggies have theirs elevated on an old dining room table we found at the thrift store. I store all their guinea pig stuff underneath.

I don't know if it's necessarily weird... but my dog smiles and starts sneezing when I come home after being gone for like 15 minutes or more. When I went to Colorado for a week and came back she was doing it so much I thought she was gonna pass out.

I want to take a picture of it lol, it's so funny.

Yes. Cats like dog and cat food. =] They pretty much eat anything that looks good.

We have a dog that we got from the shelter who has 3 legs. We named her Pogo (Yes I know, we're cruel) and because of her lack of a limb, she does something overly funny.

Ya see, because she doesn't have a back leg to scratch her left side, if she gets an itch, she comes to us and we scratch it for her with a back scratcher that we named "The Pogo Stick" (Hardy har har). What's funny is the way she comes over to somebody when she wants scratched. She comes over, nudges your leg with her nose, then wiggles her butt and does a little wiggly dance while going around in a circle until you get out the Pogo Stick.

It's hilarious to watch.
