Eggs people eat aren't normally considered meat unless you are vegan but the ponies aren't vegan since they eat dairy. About the omnivore thing the show really has no continuity when it comes to that. Different writers and animators probably have then eat different things.

You could have a vegetarian hot dog. The casing doesnt have to be filled with meat. Thing is in Equestria the animals seem to be more intelligent than they are on Earth. Could you see fluttershy's reaction if somepony wanted to eat a rabbit?

Well we have seen fish cutie marks that look like we might have some fisherponies. Yes they eat eggs. They might eat some amount of fish as well but there isnt any major evidence beyond cutie marks. They eat eggs in things.

 

I would say this means they are herbivores who are not damaged by meat products. As active as they are, I do not think it is beyond thought though that a little extra protein in the form of eggs or fish couldnt be worthwhile. Sugar also doesnt seem to harm them even in large quantities.

I just had a random thought here, but the old fantasy safety net (A wizard did it) just came to mind. Given that Equestria is a magical land, and logic is more of a suggestion than a law, what if meat is grown rather than harvested?

 

Hot dog trees, Ham-bushes, the haggas plant?

 

Given that we are discussing a fantasy world, why not?

Hey, they eat cupcakes, and cupcakes have meat in them kidding.... Anyway I think that they're diets consist of vegetables in the same way that our diets consist of wheats veggies and meats. But I think they probably eat as common as humans eat celery. Or they may have meat themed foods on holidays, or on special diets to gain weight. And anyway it makes sense. Why else would Applejack have pigs if she couldn't eat them? They can't provide a good source of milk and are basically worthless besides being used as garbage bins for rotting apples.

I suppose they're made capable of it, but it seems kinda like eating meat would be a bit odd. It also sounds actually really dark when you think about it... I'm pretty sure the only real meat* if you wanna call it that they eat is proably like eggs.

Still a pony eatting something like ham... Doesn't seem to make much sense to me. Even talking magical flying ones.

I don't see any real reason for them to eat meat, considering the way most ponies view other creatures. But I guess it'd make sense to make them omnivores so the people watching can have something to identify with. Just like they put humans in G1.

That's more within the realms of Discord than anything else, plus we have seen no sign of such a thing.

The pigs are supposedly used to gather truffles, but otherwise I see no use for them. Plus, dogs can be trained to hunt down truffles, which means there's really no reason to have pigs.

 

A friend of mine, Kyronea, once when I mentioned such to him pointed out two things. The first was that there has been at least one instance where a pony is shown having pointed teeth (Rainbow Dash during the GGG, at one point in her attempts to get the wonderbolts attention. He also made the point that theoretically, due to the brain size they'd likely need to be as sentient as they are (I am very much paraphrasing here, so don't hold me to it) that it would make sense for them to eat meat to gain more calories to power their bodies, or some such.

I don't know, there is a lot to Equestria that we haven't seen yet (or to be accurate, hasn't been written yet). I honestly can't see the Ponies raising animals for the slaughter, but seeing them harvest meat that they've grown just strikes me as being possible. Think about were the rainbows come from, and some of the more fantasic monsters and plants. I'd say it's possible within the non-Discord Equestria.

Pointed teeth does not automatically point to meat eating. Aside from poetic license where an artist can use them to show anger, determination, or a variety of other things for a short period of time and then change them back to their more common form, in nature pointed teeth can also be used to tear the flesh of fruit and other forms of food that cannot be eaten whole.

 

Secondly the idea that a sentient being must eat meat to maintain calories is, well, simply not accurate. Believe me, I'm a vegetarian and I have no issue with keeping my calories up. It's a myth that eating a meat free diet is a good idea to lose weight because there are tons of yummy things out there that are vegetarian friendly and still full of calories.

 

Since the Ponies also have a similar ability to create a variety of dishes with what they have available I think they can manage this as well.
