The whole Love and Tolerance thing...

Tuxedo Kamen!

Recommended Posts

It's no secret that some ponies are a little less accepting than others. We are all human behind the computer screen, and it should be no surprise that we can't all be loving all the time. With my time on the forums, and elsewhere on the net, I have come across bronies/pegasisters who take the philosophy to extremes. Toleration is one thing, the toleration of hate is another. I also constantly see ponyfolk who seem to choose to exclude and show intolerance to others just because they can, defying the very concept of the aforementioned creed. So, I think the questions here are, do you follow the message of the show? and if you do, at what point do you draw the line?

i follow love and tolerance and i try to take it to heart, though some times it is hard to do it, however there are certain things i cannot tolerate, such as criminals and idiots,

i follow love and tolerance to a certain degree, or love and tolerate those who deserve it

We should strive to live out the lessons taught in the show because they are meaningful.

However, as for the phrase itself within the brony fandom, "love and tolerate", I've said it before in a highly-brohoofed post; that saying has lost all of its intention and meaning and should, quite frankly, be buried. The IDEA of loving everyone and showing tolerance, yes, should be done.

it makes me sad to see when people say they dont follow love and tolerance, or dont even try to

now im not a perfect person, heck ill be the first to admit im a heartless, soulless individual, and at times i can seem like a terrible person, but at least i try to follow love and tolerance, and i think ive done fairly well at it

I try to follow the love and tolerance thing as much as possible. I've noticed I've become more accepting of other people. So that's a plus. I also try not to even use the word hate anymore. It really makes me sad to see people not following the love and tolerance part. Luckily I don't talk to or even know anyone who doesn't follow the love and tolerance thing.

The barely go by this creed. Usually I go by it when i'm trying to stop myself from punching someone in the face. Or from overly insulting someone to the highest degree possible. I rarely actually go by the creed. I honestly don't see the need most of the time. Maybe because I barely ever socialize with non-bronies, so I don't need to follow it much because bronies are already better than most. Usually I only not love and tolerate at huge masses of ignorance or when my temper gets the best of me.

Love and tolerance is a very blind creed. We must learn to tolerate, because we can't change everything. However, we shouldn't love what we don't like or approve of. That would be silly. Somethings you shouldn't have to tolerate, such as NSFW material on this board.

It's a VERY situational term that I think should be dispelled.

I have a 3 way rule when it relates to love and tolerance.

If it doesn't like you, Respect their choice (doesn't mean I have to like it.).

If it harms you, Defend yourself.

If its going to kill others or you, Take action to keep yourself or others from being killed.

Otherwise, Love and Tolerate.

This reminds me of the constant debate in the rave scene "do you follow plur"?

PLUR:

PEACE – Hostility typically serves no purpose other than to defend an ego that is lacking inner peace. It is a common belief among the rave culture that violence is never the answer.

LOVE– Acts and feelings of goodwill towards all others. The exchange of gestures such as hugging can be seen in immense amounts at any rave; this being a way of "spreading the love."

UNITY – We are all united in the human condition.

RESPECT - A person must show regard for the feelings of others through their actions and inaction, and one must have respect for oneself and environment.

but when it comes down to it, no one can really follow all of this in every single moment in their lives. they can try their haradest, but part of the human condition is imperfection and failure. so by design, plur is flawed.

so in love and tolerance, i believe you can try your hardest to love everyone and to tolerate everything, but really where do you draw the line between tolerate and not to tolerate? when do you say "i will tolerate their opinions and ideas and beliefs" but only as long as it doesn't negatively affect others? and who are you to decide when others' actions are negative? so i think those who take the love and tolerate thing to extreme, are fools.

do unto others however you want. be a kind gentle understanding open minded person if you want to, more power to you! but why the need for a "rule" or "law" to live by? why not just be "insert positive quality here" if you want to. why the labels? they just make everything more complicated.

I try to always solve problems by love and tolerance. Sometimes it doesn't seem that way in the heat of a discussion, but I never have anything against that person, just his opinions. But if there is a person that can't be reasoned with, that cannot understand that I feel different than him or that he simply is calling me names I just leave (and here on the internet it's easy). It's no use to just keep on trying, if they cannot be reasoned with, leave them.

I follow the Love & Tolerance code as much as I can. I am a pretty tolerant guy to most things thrown at me but there are certain ones that I have low tolerances too, but not enough to be very hateful about it, I don't beleive in hate.

I love and tolerate everyone until they do something that is just... not good. At that point I'll still care about them and tolerate them, it's just not as strong. I follow the show's message in real life.

Hate shouldn't exist but it does. I try to see my "enemy's" POV and step back into third person. Why are they acting this way? Usually it helps me to see past their rough exterior and show of hate.

Love and tolerate, and live by it.

as a lurker from 4chan who has seen the birth of bronies, let me explain the whole love and tolerance thing,

It all started in /co/ when MLP was just having a small fan base, but people were spamming pony threads left and right,

and sometimes they would say "Love and Tolerance" as a joke just for irony, then when ponychan came up, people brought with them the love and tolerance thing with them and somehow started to think that love and tolerance was real.

It was never meant to be.

I try to love and tolerate. But, when someone comes up to me with a problem...then I start to get bitchy. Other wise, I think us ponies should TRY at least...because on MLP almost all ponies are love and tolerant (Besides Trixie, Diamond Tiara, Silver Spoons). But..yeah thats my opinion

This. I haven't watched every single episode enough to memorize the entire script, but I'm pretty sure the phrase never appears anywhere in the show. I think a lot of people parrot it without really knowing where it comes from (why is that not surprising?).

I go on /mlp/!

Congrats. The fandom has evolved past 4chan. /mlp/ is sometimes worst than ponychan, all they talk about is how they're the only good fans.

As for the phrase, for one thing, I think of it more than a show. If I honestly changed my life's stance because of a TV show about ponies, I'd be pretty easy to brainwash. But, I do believe it's a great thing to follow.

To love someone, and to tolerate them, is not to agree with what they do or not punish them. It's to not hate them, and to realize you may not be right, and their opinions are even just a weensy bit valid.

I most certainly do follow the message of the show. But I cannot and will not tolerate high levels of hate... I will never tolerate hate... Obviously I don't mean we should round up the haters and have lynching party, just that there is no way I am gonna sit here smiling saying I love and tolerate it.

I interpret the phrase "Love and Tolerate" as being analogous to "Deal with It". Both of them serve to thumb their nose and/or blow off the tidal waves of criticism that are often levied against the fandom.

Quite Correct, (well I don't know anything about the 4chan lurking but, as far as the phrase goes)It' has never been mentioned in the show, and is not cannon in any way, shape, of form. Knowing that, Do you choose to ignore the fan created belief? Just curious

Back in my day..... (Opinionated rant, don't read if only interested in the thread topic)

Ravers didn't start with PLUR, but the variation is not far from it. When I was an active member int the rave scene, It was all about having a good time. Eventually, a saying came about (that i don't remember) that was basically stating that the raver was only concerned with partying, music, and drugs. Because most of us couldn't remember it, we didn't use it. However, when the large crackdown's on raves came along, some of the ravers protested, using PLE, PLX as a means of a unified message. Peace Love and (Drug) was supposed to signify that ravers were harmless and wanted to be left alone. The acronym got ravers in more trouble for condoning the use of drugs, so it changed to PLR. I don't know much past that, like when the U was added, because i had more of an interest in staying out of jail, than protecting my hobby. There is the history of PLUR for ya.

Yes I agree that labels get in the way of a message.

If you don't wrong me, I won't wrong you. If you right me, I will right you. If you wrong me, I will wrong you.

Those are the three sentences of my creed. If you help me, I'll at least try to help you. If you don't mess with me, I won't mess with you. Basically like that, it's not love and tolerate but it works for me.

20. You are not required to Love and Tolerate, but its highly recommended.

This is the words I live by so ya, there no reason to really state anything else... because you can't love and Tolerate everything, but keep in within spirit to be awesome and not hate or I will use.

27. Can you keep your hate down, I am trying to read here.

The motto indeed is overused, yet I would not bury it. I think that if you pick the correct meaning out of it, it can be a good

way to live by, because once you learn to think about other humans with love and tolerance in the first place, as your first

feeling, it becomes a lot easier to get over conflicts with haters and such people. If you try to love (that meaning loving the

humanity in them) them even despite their stupidity which makes them act wrongly, their acts will stop upsetting you.

As for the tolerating part, I think that it is pretty much covered by the phrase

,,The freedom of individual ends at the very place where the freedom of another individual begins"

So, I think that you should tolerate anything that does not limit your freedom or a freedom of somebody else.

Being that a different religion, a fetish, an addiction to cute pony pictures...
