To be honest I play games for fun. However I rarely play online anymore and when I do its either CS:GO or TF2. When I do get time to play video games I usually play Fallout 3. Even though its been out for over 4 years its still fun as hell to play. Much better than Fallout: New Vegas but i'm rambling and starting to get off topic.

I normally play just for fun. The only time I play for skill is in the few games I know I wreck at. I do have my moments where I might get angry, but only usually when its something outrageous. Like christmas kids opening a brand new game when its been out forever and haven't played that series once in their life. And by that, I mean making really really blatant and stupid mistakes.

I usually only play for fun

I really don't think I ever play for skill due to the fact that on most fighting games (example)

I'll just button mash just to try to win XD

Well, I guess it all depends on your state of mind. If you play to have fun, sometimes you don't realize that your doing better than some guy who is raging his ass off trying to win. I like to play for fun, so I really don't care if I suck or not. I just want to hang out with friends and try to have a good time.

Just for fun. I totally suck at pretty much any multiplayer game (whether it's shooting, fighting, racing, whatever)...it seems like no matter how much I practise, I never seem to get any better. =/

I get much more enjoyment from playing through single player and following the story through.

I always go into something trying to become the best I can be. I play for skill but no for fame or aproval from others.

I'm a decent LoL player, I understand the mechanics of the game very well and I know what is good to do/plan or not but my skill "character control" wise is pretty shitty. I play for skill in leadership and understanding of the strategies and tactics in this game, not for the "I play lee sin because he requires skills olololololol and I'm a pro MLG stuck in ELO HELL" kind of deal.

Same for Starcraft 2, I'm forever bronze because my apm is like... 10 XD But I know every counter to almost every opening in the game. I don't really know the build orders since i can't really follow them because of my shitty apm but, meh. I'm aiming for a solid gold or platinum placement, just for fun.

In short, when I play a game it's: do your best or die trying.

I'm what once was, what now is and what shall be.

Shall you be human, monster or god himself.

It really depends. I play TF2 for fun. I do try to get better, but ultimately, I'm just having a good time. Same with LoL, which causes no end of haters telling me to uninstall the game when I go 5/13/4 while fucking around with some totally weird build that doesn't work but is really fun. Like movement-speed Skarner.

On the other hand, I play a lot of games because I enjoy acquiring mad skills. I power game in a lot of games, trying to get the maximum amount of damage possible. Other games, especially Castlevanias, I like being underleveled, or even imposing restrictions on myself (no armor, only certain weapon types, no items, that sort of thing) so that I'm forced to rely on technical skills to survive. For example, I just started a hard more lvl 50 cap Death Ring only run on OoE. Which basically means, I took the hard mode on one of the hardest CV games ever and made it so I die in one hit from anything, no matter what it is. Wish me luck :)

I play games for fun, for the enjoyment of fantasy gaming consisting of many genres of gaming. I always preferred games from the retro years. I enjoy gaming on NES, SNES, Genesis and N64. IMO, they don't emphasize the factor of skill/gain as they are today. Most people tend to claim that the skill they earn from their experience makes them seem better in general, yet that isn't true at all. When I'm gaming with friends, I call my 'skill/gain' a experience that is constantly growing and making a better adjustment for future gaming of games, that are within that genre and/or similar game-play that is used.

Gaming is nothing more that an escapism/departure from reality to allow yourself to believe that you can do tasks/actions that society will prevent from doing. ;)

Anyways, that was rather long for a quick reply. Derp.

I have lost faith in most of todays mainstream games.... espeacially games as repetitive and multiplayer based as Call of Duty, and even Halo. I find it pointless, just playing games based almost solely on multiplayer. (Which is why I like Halo better than Call of Duty, for its excellent story) I have played both games extensively and there are others I could use to make this point, but these two are the most pronounced.

THE MULTIPLAYER: Both games I did in fact find enjoyable for the multiplayer experience, however this quickly deterorated as I found out just how redundent it was to run around a map shooting people over and over again. But maybe thats just me.

On another note is how into it some players are, mostly the people who choose to insult people whenever they kill them, and if they manage to kill the person yelling they make comments like "Wow, you are so bad kid!" "OMG you are such a F***ing noob" "You have absolutely no skill" and I love hearing this one "The only f***ing reason you killed me is because you are using a f***ing noobish gun"... there are many more that I am not going to bother posting because I am sure you have already heard many of them.

Besides certain players making online game experiences not fun, the games themselves can be quite enjoyable, and in fact I used to play these games quite a bit. But after about a week or two I just cant get past how redundant the entire purpose is. These days, if I do play those kinds of games, it is almost completely for the campaign and story (Halo 4, im looking at you)

Anyway, I find it most enjoyable(no matter what game you are playing) to just play it for the sake of playing it and stop worrying about increasing "skill" That is.. unless its a game like Skyward sword, which I cant play right because of motion gaming (WHY NINTENDO WHY???!!!!)

Lets all just take a minute to reflect back to the golden age of gaming, what we refer to now as RETRO gaming... I feel I play the old games of the super nintendo and nintendo 64 more than any other system.

AND THATS MY 2 BITS!

I only play video games when I'm really bored, but usually I would just play with my friends online. Sometimes it's really weird where you're in that situation where you're the only one who hasn't been to the highest rank in a lobby. Playing for skill really smashes the fun out of it, it may also be a reason why some people play non stop.

I play first and foremost for fun, though I do enjoy having a fair amount of skill in the games I really like to play. I must admit that playing a game with someone that doesn't have a clue what they are doing can be a frustrating experiene, but usually this goes away when my friends and I start to just joke around.

If you are not skilled, but still enjoy a game who am I to rain on your parade?

I game for the fun of it. Usually if I play a game, I suck at it, but that just makes it more entertaining because sometimes I fail in such a way that I'm just like "what the flapjacks?! How does that even happen?! ". I amuse myself with gaming failures I guess you can say.

Whenever I play NSMB Wii I always try to be all pro, like doing triple jumps and not stopping ever and all this crazy stuff and usually end up just dying and this is turning into a run-on sentence :P

Still fun though.

Being skilled? Boring, its not a competition.

If you would be skilled you would pretty much enjoy playing like these guys.

Modern gaming involves competition, it's like a sport.

It really depends on the game I am playing. Games like SSX I do for skill when on the mutliplayer, but just for fun on singleplayer. Battlefield 3 is skill for me, while RFA is just for fun.

This is a really loaded question. It seems to presume that there is a difference between playing for fun and playing to win (or to improve, or any other way of putting it). I am an avid fan of competitive gaming of all sorts. I personally find great joy in delving into the minutia, or analyzing every aspect of a game. That's how I have fun, I try to improve. I understand and recognize that everyone has fun differently and I always respect that.

So in respect to the question "Do you game for skill or just for fun", I ask why I can't do both at the same time?
