Nintendo for making the Mario series, the Zelda series and many others. My childhood was filled with Nintendo games, and if it weren't for the amazing 'Link's Awakening' game, I wouldn't be the gamer I am today!

RareWare. I'm surprised I haven't seen this yet, even though they are in pretty bad shape now (thanks, Microsoft :/)

Rare made 'rare' games that each had their own feel to them in almost every aspect. Diddy Kong Racing wasn't just a racing game; it was a racing adventure, and one of the first and far-most greatest ones too! Donkey Kong Country had a simple side-scrolling 'A to B' theme, but expressed it in a unique and fun way. But Banjo-Kazooie really brung out the best in Rare. A huge world to explore with lots to do and collect, accompanied by an enthusiastic and upbeat soundtrack capable of bringing immense nostalgia tears and a memorable cast.

SONY has a lot of strong IP's, such as Ratchet & Clank, LittleBigPlanet, Jak & Daxter and Uncharted. All of these are brilliant game series and still hold themselves pretty strong: R&C made gun-shooting platforming in outer space cool; LBP brought an easy and fun way to create your very own things; J&D put attitude into platforming; and Uncharted amazed us with its breathtaking visuals, well-written storyline and fast action. Crash and Spyro were at their absolute best on the Playstation, and will be missed for a very long time...

Nintendo is the best at making games, there's just no doubt. They do everything their way, and I like their way, and they have some of the best subsidiaries/second parties in the industry imo. Capcom ain't bad either although they've made some rather questionable decisions lately(on-disc DLC unlock key crap, re-releasing fighting games, releasing RE6). I don't know much of PC games but what I've seen of games from companies like Valve and Blizzard don't really interest me at all, sorry.

Risks? I do not understand what you mean by this, That they are not doing anything new with their games?

Black ops 2 is released soon, and it will probably kill the whole cod series, why?

Because they changed too much, laser guns and things.

I also think that the story of the game is the best ever created for FPS games, and they've taken a lot of risks, and received a lot of crap for it, I do not know how many countries they have been banned in, but they have dared to do what they want.

It's hard for me to protect cod, because I got tired of the game and stopped playing it long ago, but to believe that it's a bad game is just stupid. And I'm very bad at writing in English, Sorry for that.

Forcing shock value is not the same as 'taking risks'. They are not being edgy just by portraying politically incorrect things. What I mean by taking risks is just being creative. Discover new ideas, take the franchise to new, unexpected directions. Surprise us for Christ sake! Show us something fresh, rather than just releasing the same game every year with minor tweaks.

The Call of Duty series has not taken a major risk since the first Modern Warfare, which I will admit is a good game. It just feels old, nothing ever changes. There is nothing I can get from playing Black ops or MW3 that I can't get just by replaying the first Modern Warfare.

Call of duty has a formula that has been proven to sell, so the developers are too distracted by dollar bills to try anything fresh. Their primary concern is selling units rather than making a good game, and that is why I refuse to respect the Call of Duty games.

It is the money over quality mentality that will kill the game industry.

I'm sorry, but I think Nintendo has gone downhill ever since the release of the Wii. They focused way too much on the casual audience and, in my opinion, only a few select Wii games were Nintendo's claim to fame this generation. Just look at Other M, Super Paper Mario, and Super Mario Galaxy. Forget sales for a minute and focus on the reputation these games have. Not only do they lack any sort of significant challenge, but Other M had a ton of bugs and a lame storyline, SPM had an awesome storyline but terrible gameplay and awful sidequests, and Super Mario Galaxy, while receiving praise just because "OMG MARIO!!!!1111 20/10" was criticized for being too linear and awfully repetitive and stale, especially those Comet Missions and the Purple Coins.

If you want great Nintendo Wii games, pick out both Zelda games (Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword), Kirby Wii, Mario Kart Wii, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. However, as I note this, I'm looking back to the games Nintendo made for the NES, SNES, and N64. I would probably name off more than at least 12 for each system, and for Wii I'm only listing off 4? There's something wrong here. Either I just didn't get into this generation or the games themselves have been losing quality. Just take a look at the New Super Mario Bros. series and then compare that to other great past Mario games like Super Mario All-Stars. I guarantee you'll find some significant difference that makes All-Stars a hell of a lot more memorable.

Now, then, on to my best developers:

For RPGs, I'd go with Square Enix just because I'm awfully familiar with their titles. I grew up with Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana, Dragon Quest, and Chrono Trigger so obviously I'm a big fan of the company. Their best title, in my opinion, is Final Fantasy VIII, which I have stated millions of times already on here so I won't go into anymore further detail.

For Platformers, gotta give it to the Nintendo-owned Rareware days. Banjo-Kazooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day both had their own unique style of platforming but both executed the gameplay genre to it's fullest potential and succeeded. Not only that, but Rare made some kickass NES games back in the day. Wizards and Warriors, anybody? How about for the ZX Spectrum? Sabre Wulf was a great early adventure game.

I think my vote goes towards Leave Luck To Heaven ;)

So many outstanding games made for nearly 30 years.

Who else but

Nintendo?

Squaresoft. Not Square-Enix. Squaresoft; pre-merger. As one might suspect, I'm thinking of the Final Fantasy series, but hey, I grew up with it since the beginning. I've watched how it's grown and changed since the first game with the exception of the ones that weren't released in America until many years later; I had to play those after they had passed their original prime. Contrary to most other opinions, I enjoyed XIII and thought it was a more than passable installment despite it's obvious flaws, though the games from the SNES and Playstation days easily remain my favorites for having better character development, less linearity, and more compelling plots.

Black Isle Studios, the division of Interplay that's responsible for developing Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, and Fallout 2 was my second favorite developer/publisher of the mid-late 90s. Bioware is at the top of my list for making the Baldur's Gate saga. Unlike most people, apparently, I didn't hate Mass Effect 3. Even so, I much prefer old school Bioware to what they are today.

When Black Isle closed down a lot of their guys went on to found Obsidian Entertainment, who is one of my present-day favorites (Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas). They're even developing an isometric RPG similar to the Infinity Engine games that Black Isle worked on in the 90s.

Bethesda is a good one too, because despite their games being so buggy as to be unplayable upon release they eventually get everything working. It's always well worth the wait.

Nintendo is on my list, but to name a few smaller groups I would have to say that 2K/Irrational Games has made complete masterpieces like SystemShock2, Bioshock 1 (2, soon Infinite) Borderlands 1 & 2, the Civilization series. Valve is also on my list because they have made games that are so simple, fun and hilarious while at the same time attempting to be serious. Oh and Capcom, I love the Phoenix Wright series.

Now this is my kind of thread

- Nintendo, it's because of them that I got into gaming in the first place, giving me some of my all time games like Zelda, Metroid and Smash to name a few

- Retro Studios: They revived both Donkey Kong Country and Metroid to glory and everything they practically touch is gold, I'm really excited to see what they have next to offer

- Kojima Productions: The MGS franchise is my favorite game series ever and ZOE are also great, so I have to put them here

- Clover Studios/Platinum Games: I mostly love their work as Clover, since I haven't gotten to play their Platinum titles, but I LOVE Viewtiful Joe, Okami, and God Hand

- Grasshopper Manufacturer: Recently got into them, I loved No More Heroes and Killer7, and I really want Lollipop Chainsaw and Killer is Dead

- Capcom: Despite their recent bullshit, I'd be lying if I said they didn't make some of my favorite games(Megaman, Resident Evil, Pheonix Wright)

- Square-Enix: They were the King of RPGs so it's kinda sad to see them in the state they're in right now

- Bungie: While I did think for a while that they were overrated, I loved Halo and am exited for Destiny

- Sony: Along with Nintendo, they made a lot of my favorite game series like Syphon Filter, Twisted Metal, God Of War, etc.

- SNK: I honestly prefer the King of Fighters games over Street Fighter

- Atlus: Another RPG Beast. Seriously, Persona is amazing

I chose to just go with a single reason for my choices, otherwise I would be here all night typing.

The now defunct Paralax. Descent was pretty much their crown jewel and possibly one of the most intense, nausea inducing, bat shit crazy FPS games ever made.

As someone else said, Squaresoft would also be a contender. Xenogears was epic, sad, heartwarming, tragic, deep, enthralling...I could go on.

And third on my list, From Software. Their Armored Core series is one of those rare franchises to withstand the test of time, and actually get better with each new generation.

Nintendo, hands down

I mean, they're like the gaming gods, they are. The Mario series, Legend of Zelda, all those are amazing video games series that have been around since before all others and are still just as awesome. They even make their own consoles!

Bethesda. By a lot.

The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and who knows what's next!

Their games may be buggy, but it doesn't stop me from having a good time with them.

BioWare is pretty awesome, too.

although they make some cheesy romances.

But of course, I can't neglect Interplay for creating the greatest game series of all time, Fallout.

Hmm, Nintendo is up there, but not for anything like FPS or RPG's. FPS wise I feel DICE does a really good job with most of their games, as well as Crytek. RPG wise I'm going for Bethesda. I'm also going to say Westwood WAS fantastic, until EA took over.

Flying Squirrel Entertainment, Taleworlds & Torn Banner Studios.

Seriously now, look around amongst the Indie game community, and you'll find games that are more fun than most AAA titles.

Mount and Blade Warband, Battle Cry of Freedom (alpha state right now), Chivalry: Medieval warfare, etc. Those games are great, but since mainstream titles take all the glory for themselves, very few people go check them out.

I really like "That Game Company" because they have good games like Journey and The Unfinished Swan.

Another good company is Frictional Games.  The ones who made Amnesia.

I also really like Sucker Punch.  They made some good games like Sly Cooper and Infamous.

Nintendo hooves down.

They own some of the most widely recognized characters in gaming. They produce quality games that I still find to be fun, even though people claim they are pandering to the casual gamers. I can say without a doubt though that the last level in mario galaxy 2 was NOT pandering to the casuals...

I also think Game Freak deserves a nod as well for creating the pokemon series, yoshi AND the gameboy camera. I don't really know if you could consider the gameboy camera a game, but that's still pretty awesome!

Oh man, back in my skating days, my brothers and I used to make slideshows of us skating using Game Boy Camera. That thing was beyond awesome.

Funny how nobody mentioned The Neverhood Team.

True, they have a few games and they have disbanded, they have made amazing games.

The Neverhood? It's hands down one of the best puzzle/adventure games ever released, it's art.

Skullmonkeys? Great platformer with a lot of difficulty and how comedic it was.

Boombots? Not the best fighting game, but it's fun.

Their games featuring clay it's just amazing (except boombots, just in cutscenes) and how they used it, i repeat, it's amazing.

While those companies have some good games associated with them, two of them really have nothing ground breaking or truly spectacular. As for Minecraft, it's actually pretty poorly made, and I don't mean gameplay wise. I feel sorry for Jeb having to deal with that code. Besides, if you mention Mojang, you also need to mention the modding community for Minecraft, which is absolutely massive.

Valve is worth a mention though with Portal, and hell, Steam. Steam counts as revolutionary, even though it's not a game. It single-handedly changed how we obtain games.

This is not to say Bethesda and Bioware don't make solid and highly enjoyable games, they just aren't anything no one else is doing in terms of mechanics, or gameplay.

These are my opinions of course.

Let's see:

Arc System Works - for their fantastic fighting game series Guilty Gear and Blazblue. And a shout out to Aksys who does the localizing for those games nowadays.

Nippon Ichi Software - Develops awesome SRPGs such as the Disgaea series, Phantom brave and Zettai Hero Project. Their games are packed with content and humor.

Atlus - Mostly because of the Persona series but the other Shin Megami Tensei games are also worth mentioning like Devil Survivor and Nocturne. And lets not forget about Catherine.

These are the best developers in my eyes since the games they create are the ones I enjoy the most.

I don't think there's any overarching 'best company' more like companies that are best in certain fields.

I know that any game I pick up by Bethesda will be good RPGs with the best story lines and most thought out plots, whereas I know Crytek are the company to go to for stunning graphics and physics. Infinity Ward/Treyarch/DICE are who I go to for guaranteed top quality FPS online action. And I hate to say this, but Blizzard do the best job at MMOs.

I'd say Bethesda but I pay $60 for their games and end up being little more than a bug tester, it's all this deadline crap, I mean, it's not their fault, but when they had say oblivion, it was still riddled with game breaking bugs after they released the final patch. meanwhile the fans made their own patches and made it basically bug free...Same with Fallout 3.

There's no profit in bug fixing, but it would be nice if they just ported the fan made fixes onto the console versions...

Oh, anyway, Ubisoft...They rarely disappoint.

A personal favorite video game company is Level-5. They made my favorite game series ever; Professor Layton, and they also made the Scribblenauts games which are also very fun.

I also really like Thatgamecompany. I love Flower and Journey so much. (Flow is pretty, just not my cup of tea)

Some other favorites include: Nintendo, Valve, and Rockstar.
