What if?

The failure of leadership is always a big fear, and unfortunately a realistic possibility. What if something happened (Hypothetically) that got Feld0 or Scootacool, the top mods on this website, banned? Would the site simply fail to update on a regular basis? Would it be completely taken down? Or would it stay the same?

I honestly wonder what would happen........'cuz y'know, I'm crazy like that!

I'm quite sure you can't ban the sites creator or the sites go to guy for any reason. This forum is their social sandbox and if they wanted to build up a castle or take one down is up to them. BUT if they were to be removed from their places of power, someone would step in to fill the power void.

I don't even know them (as in met them) but i think they're the coolest for putting this all together so if something happened to either of them which resulted in them leaving MLPForums I'd almost think about packing my bags too.

 

Also, are you hinting to be heir to the throne?

Feld0 can't get banned. He is the admin and creator of this site. Also, someone can't just take his place, they need his permission since this is his site and not the publics site.

He doesn't even need his account in order to update the site. Its all on Feld0's computer.

Feld0 can simply 'pull the plug' and this site would crash down like a wet fish. Maybe some of you missed it, but we have a "Licensed to: The Feldian Network" at the bottom of the site.

Can you even ban a Mod/Admin without removing their privileges beforehand? I really doubt Feld0 would ban Scootacool. He must obviously trust him if he made him the Tech Admin of the site. Feld0 created the site. How could he get banned from his own site that he created? (I'm also pretty sure Admins cannot ban other Admins and/or the creator. So I really don't think there's anything to worry about there.)

 

I really don't think Mods get banned either. I mean, they're Moderators. They're a step UP from normal users. They're trusted by Feld0 and the other Admins of the site. And besides, I like them. I don't think they'd ever do anything bad enough to get them banned.

 

But if any of this DID happen, the site would probably turn to complete anarchy. But you never know.

Now off of that joke, if this did happen, say all computers he has access to shutdown for no reason, then I am sure Scootacool would take the position until he got back. If the same thing happned to him, we would find out somehow, and would use the site until he could get back. No one would run it, so there would most likely not be any realy admin, or owner until he got back. The global mods and admins would take charge of the whole situation until he did get back. That would be my guess.

Well, if they got banned, then they were presumably compromised in some manner as I very much doubt anyone on the forums has privileges to ban admins. I don't think we'd have to worry about that as I have it on good faith that Feld0 and/or Scootacool keep up to date and validated backups of this site. After all, no one neglects doing backups.

I would think if something bad were to happen to them, or the site, we, as the users, could band together to make our own forums. We all have the ability to do so, its not really magical, and takes very little effort to do so. Would it be as awesome? Absolutely not, doing something like this took them a really, really long time - and lots of money - so I'm sure they wouldn't just let it all come crashing down like that..

 

 

When Sonic Stadium got rid of SoniClans, two members created a whole new forum, and many of the former clanners joined. Proof that this idea could certainly work, provided... Never mind.

I actually did manage to ban myself once or twice by accident, but I can bring myself back by editing the database - that's a higher level of access that IP.Board doesn't have any control over.

MLP Forums isn't hosted from my personal computer, but I have IPMI/KVM and full root access to the server it's on, so it is virtually the same level of access.

 

This site being a privately owned entity, you got it spot on that someone can't simply "step up" and take over the proverbial throne, so to speak. Only I can pass the torch and transfer all the rights, services, accounts, and passwords someone would need to take over the site.

Actually, Scootacool does not have the level of access needed to power on the server should it ever shut down for some reason. If that were to happen, things would just be offline until I have the chance to hit the power button on the IPMI panel.

The only conceivable way I can see myself or Scootacool getting banned is either intentionally doing it to ourselves for technical reasons, or it happening unintentionally through a security breach. We have measures in place to recover from both scenarios.

 

It's conceivable that MLPF's users could split off and form their own site; but speaking on a personal level, if something were to happen that would severely hamper my ability to run this place, I'd much rather add another admin or two before letting the site go to crap. Like you pointed out, I think way too much has already been invested into this place to just let it disappear like that.
