I'm a Protestant.  I don't believe that the pope is the only one to talk to God, a deity which I believe to exist.  I also believe that Jesus Christ is the Lord's son.

I happen to believe in this for two reasons; the first being that I have been raised this way, and the second being that I just simply wish to have faith.  It is mainly my own decision though.  I just feel like I'm connected with the Lord I guess.

I used to be a catholic, then I took an arr- ok, no, I'm not going to do that.

I am an atheist. I was a Catholic until the later parts of high school when I started posing questions about some of the stances my religion was taking. That was when I decided to actually read and interpret the bible and the rest, as they say, is history.

It was a bit of a painful bitter break up, but things have calmed down. If anyone casually asks what my religion is, I usually tell them I am a secular humanist. It doesn't cause nearly as much drama and it signals that I can be a good person without attaching myself to an authority-driven philosophy.

I am an atheist. I've really...actually only come to that conclusion very recently this month. Been agnostic for almost 2 years now. Religion doesn't make any sense, I've tried, really really REALLY tried, but I can't do it. I've read through both he old and new testament, and I know what they are saying, but there are too many flaws, gaps in there. Like every single question in the world is answered with "God did it" as an easy way to escape critical thinking. And besides, the Bible has been re-written thousands of times, whose to say if there was a God that all of what is in there  isn't even correct based on his actual message?

Hello Nixter,

Just dropping by to mention that I've gone ahead and merged your thread with this one, as it covered the same general topic about discovering fellow members' religious standpoints.  Always use the search function if you are unsure if a thread exists or not.  Thank you.

Religiously I'm Atheist,

I don't believe in any gods because using logical thinking and deduction I concluded there is no tangible evidence for their existence. Many people say Dark Energy is the same as god in that there is no evidence. That is not true because Dark Energy has tangible effects that we can measure, god does not.

Simple. Just post in your religion. If its not included, quote this post and tell me what it is. I'll add it.

I'm an omnist, which means I believe in the possibility of all religions being true including atheism. The reason for this being is that I don't want to seem like an arrogant douche that says "All ______ are dumb for believing _________,"

I'm curious about people's opinions about something.  There are so many subsects of irreligion that I'm not entirely sure which one I belong to.  I usually called myself an agonostic (or an atheist-agnostic), but I'm starting to reconsider.

From a position of pure, cold logic, I suppose that I am an agnostic, as there is no way to make a truth claim on religion.  However, my emotions and inclinations are a bit different.  For my emotions, the idea of a God feels absurd.  In particular, my mind has no spot at all for for an Abrahimic, personal God; emotionally, the idea just does not register with me in any way.  I'm a bit more accepting of the idea of an impersonal, transcendental God, more of a force than a being.  I can at least understand and connect with that idea, although, like all notions of God, I do not accept or deny them from a purely logical standpoint.

In short, logically I'm an agnostic, but my emotional and subjective side is atheistic.  So...what do I call myself?

(PS: Answer honestly, but I am somewhat hoping that I can just call myself an atheist.  I've found that, when I say that I'm an agnostic, most people respond by thinking that I'm "neutral" or that I have no opinions on religion.)

The definition of atheism is only a "lack of belief in God". The assertion or belief that there isn't a God is not necessary to be an atheist.

You could be an Agnostic Atheist, because Agnosticism and Atheism fall on two different scales. A/Theism is about belief, while A/Gnosticism is about knowledge. Personally I'm an Agnostic Atheist to the general idea of a God. More of a Deistic God, but I pretty firmly believe that an intervening God (like the one of the Abrahamic religions) is really, well I have to put it this way, sorry: Nonsensical. I suppose not completely impossible... but... really.

Actually I think the best way to put the opinion of many Atheists (including myself) is that the claim of a God's existence is really very outlandish and has nothing to support it over the claim that there is a giant invisible teapot out in space that is undetectable to us. It's an extraordinary claim, and the time to believe it is after there is any evidence. Otherwise it is just another completely random claim that has no relevance to anything. It certainly isn't impossible, but again, it's a claim that simply doesn't have anymore credibility than any random claim you could make up like the claim above about the invisible undetectable teapot (well, I think it might have a little more chance than that, but replace teapot with something that is natural and never seen before by us and it has exactly the same amount of credibility).  Perhaps somebody else could word that all better than me, but that is the gist of what the majority of Atheists believe, from what I've seen.

When I was small, my mum was a Jevhovah's Witness, so I mingled with them for a few years.

They are nice people, but one day I said I didn't want to be a part of this anymore - mainly due to their lack of trust and suspicion in technology and computers (As an aspiring programmer this didn't sit well with me!).

I discovered Buddhism (SGI) and got involved with some great people there. I drifted out of practice more through lack of motivation than anything.

In the last few years I've been openly using the label 'atheist'.

I loosely follow Discordianism. It's a religion that embraces the chaos of the world. That's right. It's a religion centered around Discord.

img-975650-1-Discord_S02E02.png

Allow me to share with you a quote from the Principia Discordia

"GP: Is Eris true?

M2: Everything is true.

GP: Even false things?

M2: Even false things are true.

GP: How can that be?

M2: I don't know man, I didn't do it."

As you can see, it incorporates a lot of absurdism, making it probably the funniest of all religions. I don't put too much importance into religion so I identify with this to make things more interesting, I guess. I also incorporate ideas from a certain type of Buddhism into my beliefs, particularly after reading Siddhartha.

I just wanted to give you an epic brohoof there Melancolic Memory! I recently discovered discordanism and a more recent 'parody' incarnation Church of the Subgenius, when I realised that the answer to life is simple dear friends - SLACK. I realised the reason I was unhappy was because those pink 'norms' had stolen all my original slack by asking me to get up each morning and go to work for THE MAN! Hehe also one of the leading speakers is Hal Robbins (Harry S Robins) - who's voice you guys will know as playing 'Doctor Kleiner' in Half Life video game series! I mean - who can resist a religion where I get to listen to him speaking on a regular basis? Lol

Yet amongst the silliness, I also see a very valid argument that our world is order that was born out of chaos. Alan Turing did a lot of work in this area, showing how random patters in animal mutations can seem to start forming 'order'. Without this randomness in the universe, we would not be here. Just as light can only exist in dark, so Discord is a necessary part of the world because without it, harmony would be meaningless.

My belief is in agnosticism, but my religion is Judaism.

I don't know why, but I really do love being a Jew:

I love the Torah, the Talmud, and I'm eager to learn more about my religion,

even if I don't believe everything it implies to.

How DO YOU get scholarships for being Jewish, really?

I mean, I've never heard of anything like this before. That sounds quite suspicious!

Well, it was less of an official scholarship and more of a scholarship fund at my local temple. ;) Anyone with the high grades was entered in a raffle to earn three thousand dollars towards the college of their choice.

And little 'ol me won! I used it to pay for housing at the Colorado School of Mines.

I'm spiritual.  I believe there's something but it isn't god or anything like that.  For me, it would be absurd that after someone dies, there's nothing left.  I won't clearly state my beliefs here though.

Well, I live in Israel, so we don't have this kind of things here.

We DO have regular scholarships, though they are not given to just anyone.

Wow, this is weird... Every forum i've been on before banned you for religious talk...

Oh well, Agnosticism. But i'm not really a "Spiritual" person anyway. (But I believe in ghosts!  :o )

But I believe in so many crazy theories that i'm pretty sure i'm not in any religion!

Well, you'd be considered an agnostic positive atheist, meaning you are aware that there is always the possibility and versions of a God, but really the chances are slim, even more so the chances of them ALL being right are even SLIMMER, therefore, you find one to be more ludicrous than the other, and you could, in turn, reject the idea altogether, however even if you do not agree with it (positive atheist part) you still think  it could happen (agnostic part) I'm guessing that's how you would describe it, because the way I see it, you're not a negative or soft atheist, and not an irreligious agnostic. :P Oh, and if you prefer a more cooler term, one coined by Dawkins, use this: Temporary Agnostics in Practice meaning you aren't really sure but you aren't going to accept one thing or reject everything.

I guess that's a way to put it?

I don't really believe in a god, or in the Bible or anything. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's impossible that there's a god, I just personally don't really believe in one.

Not sure if I'm agnostic or atheist, or both?

Orthodox Christian, bcuz they are like the ancient Christian church, older than the Roman Catholic Church which infact was part of the Orthodox Church. They have retained alot of ancient traditions and texts that were lost to Schism and Reform. Also, like some Eastern religions, they are more based in wisdom and mystery. Unlike, Western religions that are grounded in Law and Logic.

But, above all, cuz it makes me complete.
