Outdated and overused Internet Lingo

Sequinox

Recommended Posts

While I was on my Tumblr the other day a post came around saying something along the lines of...

"...that one person on the internet that still uses the xD face". This got me thinking that maybe this symbol is now... out dated? What are your thoughts on that and what phrases or smilies do you remember from years ago that you don't see too often anymore? I don't even know the last time I saw somebody post ROFL.

Also, what internet lingo grinds your gears? The phrase "I can't" or "I can't even" is starting to get on my nerves a bit. Fortunately that's really only found on Tumblr, I've noticed.

Here's one I hear all the time. "My facebook wuz haked lol". No. Just no. When someone logs into your account when you forget to log out, it isn't hacking. People don't know what it means to hack anymore. It's just ridiculous *Disclaimer* I'm not a hacker, I'm just not ignorant.

Other than that, I guess people who claim to be trolls and fail at it are just annoying. You wouldn't believe how many self-described trolls are just pathetic at actually trolling. It drives me mad.

My friends and I just call that being fraped (facebook raped).

Sorry, but that just sounds like part of a sentence to me. I don't understand how that can annoy. Maybe I'm just missing something.

No you're not the only one, I still use it when I'm texting or on Skype.

I think what used to annoy me loads was when people used (and still use) lol even when something is clearly not funny and use it to act as if they're making a joke.

As you get older you start to associate what you did in your younger years with what you said and did. Only as you see it as 'inferior' to what you are now. ( Which is true in a relative sense ) You don't use them anymore and you start to get irritated when other people use the same words you used. While I don't use "xD" I see a lot of people who still do, and coincidentally they are also young ( either in age or to the internet ).

I think another thing that adds to this idea of it being outdated is that the internet moves extremely fast. And with extremely I mean, really extremely fast. Memes are being created every day, even if you only see some of them. So what ever you might think is 'up-to-date' is probably already old. Which leads to my conclusion that everything is old, and whatever you perceive as new is just temporary to yourself.

The only internet word that angers me to no end is yolo I despise yolo and the people that use it. You only live once NO you only die once you live everyday argh. OH and people that say "who needs good grades when you got swag" that's fine as long as you intend on working in McDonalds for the rest of time.

It probably just annoys me because it's not a complete sentence and there is just so much you could fill in the blank with. I suppose I would appreciate it if they could at least say "I can't handle this!" or something along those lines.

*Uses xD all the time and doesn't afraid of anything*

*Also tends to catch onto a meme and use it for a long time, even after everyone is done with it*

*Used to be annoyed by textspeak everywhere....then took an arrow to the knee*

i second the swag shit. i hate that expression. swag is for boys, real men have class.

i dislike most internet lingo in general though, people dont talk like that in real life, so why should it be any different just because there is a screen between the two people?

Ah that makes more sense! Yes that would annoy me as well. Sadly people are too lazy to actually type a complete and logical sentence.

HAH! If only people would keep it on the internet! The worst is when you hear a group of young teens sitting around and just saying memes. Fortunately I'm an old fogey so I don't deal with it much.

Swag and "YOLO!". I hate those two phrases.

Now "swag" as in "pony swag" as in "merchandise" is fine. I like that kind of swag!

And on second thought, YOLO is fine I suppose. I have a feeling that something comically unfortunate happens to the people who say YOLO!, and that's where some of YouTube's finest content comes from. XD

Ah man, really? When I’m on Skype or Facebook I use “XD” all the time haha. I don’t mind using emotes when typing because they can give your message a tone which is sometimes hard over the Internet. Quite honestly the only Internet lingo that has ever bothered me was poor spelling. When people say, “u” instead of “you” and other things of that nature drive me insane.

There aren't many internet terms that I would say are overused to the point of being obnoxious. The only thing I would do away with is the word "pathetic." I rarely hear people use it in real life, but it's so overused on the internet that it has no weight behind it whatsoever these days. You think I or something I like is "pathetic?" Whatever. Get back to me when you can insult with a bit more originality and maybe even with a justification beyond just a differing opinion.

I still use real life slang from when when I was little, words like rad, righteous, gnarly, etc. It carries over to the internet as well. Nobody has complained about it or anything. Wouldn't change things anyway. That's just the version of American English I use.

I love the old 90's slang! Although maybe that's even 80's? Either way, I definitely think those words need to make a comeback. Gnarly is a good word and I always love radical.

Started in the 80s, carried over to the 90s. Yeah, I've been thinking about the possibility of that too. I hope that when kids hear me say stuff like that it sticks with them.

Probably all those emotes like ^_^/

Those just annoyed the hell out of me.

Also also all the attempts at triforcing, but that's mainly just on 4chan...

Arrow in the knee jokes really annoy me. Thank God they've died down a bit. I hate YOLO and swag, too.

My least favorite lingo/meme/whatever is probably _____CEPTION. The term "inception" just means "the establishment or start of something; the beginning", not "a thing within a thing within a thing". That's the whole reason the movie was called Inception, because Cobb and his helpers were attempting to implant an idea into Fischer's head, making him think it was his own idea. The misuse of the word really ticks me off.

Swag, lol and YOLO are really the only memes I have a real problem with. Anything else is fine.. My friends use the 'and then I took an arrow to the knee' meme too much, but they do it because we're Homestuck fans so it doesn't really bug me.

Is Homestuck really why it got so popular? I knew it was from Skyrim, but I didn't realize that was what made it popular. I've tried reading Homestuck but couldn't even figure out where to begin.

I'm not sure if that's what made it so popular.. one of the characters got shot in the knee with an arrow, thus referencing the meme.

Internet lingo? Then I dunno what I find overused or outdated.

Well, actually, that was a stupid thing to say :P. "Arrow to the knee" is one, obviously. Then there's "swag" and "YOLO". I don't hate these words at all, but, for the sake of the, they are used too much.
