Does Spike have a secondary crush on Applejack?

Spike's heart still belongs to Rarity. But she's kept him in the friendzone so long that he's probably open to a reasonable alternative. Until now, his flirting with Applejack stayed just below my radar. But looking back, from the almost “accidental” kiss in Dog and Pony Show to the massage in Spike at Your Service, it now seems painfully obvious. Check out this little clip. Sadly, I don't even know what episode it's from.

Sound effect gag aside, what is up with that? I imagine AJ is exaggerating a bit, but why would Spike hug her repeatedly if he considered her just another older female pony friend? “Hoo there, loverboy,” indeed!

If he does I don't know if it is a conscious one. It is certainly possible though. I will say this: there are certainly a good amount of ship teases with Spike and Applejack, especially after the last episode. It's probably up there with Pinkiedash and Flutterdash for subtextual material now.

She was quite a close friend to Spike in the early seasons. Since the 2nd half of Season 4 it flushed away.

Well for staters, I don't ship Spike with any of the mane six. He's a child and they're adults. The only Spike ship I'm somewhat on board with is SweetieSpike, but that doesn't really have any evidence and that's just more of a personal crack pairing. 

 

Ships aside, the only evidence for Spike x Applejack is A Dog and Pony Show (which could be interpreted as an accident since Spike was so caught up in his daydream) and Spike at your Service (which was just Spike following his dragon code). Fun fact, originally Spike was going to be helping Rarity in the latter episode but was changed to AJ due to Rarity acting, "too mean." I'll admit that AJ seems like Spike's next best friend to Twilight, but I wouldn't go as far as to call it a crush.

Known this since that subconscious kiss attempt towards Applejack when Spike was thinking of Rarity and this was further cemented when Spike felt obligated to be Applejack's servant. Perhaps Applejack could provide the relief for Spike because she isn't the needy type like Twilight or Rarity and Spike subconsciously felt closure on her.

I honestly haven't seen any major proof in the show to support Spike having a crush on AJ as well, I don't think he could ever give up his crush on Rarity. The only thing I could see as proof is the video that Buck Testa posted, which that clip is amazing. XD

I can't believe this thread I started over three years ago has come back to life.    While AJ and Spike can get rather cozy at times I no longer think he has any possible romantic attraction to her.  Still, it was fun bringing up the idea at the time and seeing what other thought.

If Spike gets older, I can really see him be with either Rarity or AppleJack. While Rarity likes him as a dedicated friend. Applejack may truly appreciate his hard work, noble honesty and his cooking(which was retconned in one episode only).

you can see in "Princess Twilight Sparkle" episode that Applejack was the first to reach Spike who fall from the staircase. She's his most dedicated friend beside Twilight. But unlikie Twilight, i can see a possible romantic relationship growing, beside the platonic older sister love.

Pretty much. It seems like people just ship anyone who is together on screen for more than 30 seconds even if the ship makes no damn sense or is incredibly stupid. Then again there are people who ship AJ with her freakin' dog.

The combination still has some fans, but not so much nowadays.

I think they already had a close bond which the episode strengthened. Nowadays you don't see that in the new episodes. It's like the producer doesn't approve of it.

Outside of Spike at Your Service and that one scene in A Dog and Pony Show, there hasn't been a lot of interaction with Spike and Applejack in general.

Let alone suggest anything romantic between them.
