I have been so busy lately with work and what not. Being my first day off in a while I've been taking after Rarity in this gif (Minus the pole swinging)

We often talk at length about the characterization of Rarity, and how dynamic she is. This is by far the main reason she not only grew on me as I started to marathon the show last year, but also why she was spring boarded to Best Pony status. As a person that finds himself drawn to subtly complex characters in all forms of storytelling, Rarity fits along side great company. That said, characterization can be subjective, so I decided to test this a little. I reviewed some of the musings of the best literary minds on what makes a great character, and decided to see if it can be applied to Rares. I will be sharing these through the day and likely into the next week.

 

 

Motivation is one of the absolute rules in any well defined character. Without it, how can you begin to root for or against them? It is also the easiest test for Rarity to pass. She has multiple motivations featured in the series thus far, and I call her one of the dreamers in the series. She desperately wants to be recognized, to be appreciated, to be loved. That is one of the most personally identifiable traits about her. It is one that on some level all people share. It is no wonder that Rarity has one of the best "I want" songs in the series. She is a hopeless romantic as well, always looking for her prince, for someone close to share in her joy. Obviously, she is also motivated by her need to share that what she has with others. Generosity. It was identified even early on that her dreams and motivations were born when she was young, before she found her Cutie Mark. New motivations have also been born in the series. Friendship and family have increasingly become central to who she is and how we view her, but more on that in a bit.

And like her, i cannot wait to read more.

 

Its true, this part of the test she passed rather easily. If she doesn't have motivations, even many conflicting ones, who has? She is probably the mane6 with the most complex personality. She tries to find balance between her friends, family and her career. Tries to find balance between being generous to others and herself (Something that is very important, to sometimes be generous to oneself, and not sacrifice the own happiness for others). To balance all of that with her lovelife.

 

She carefully tries to find the golden middleground, and like all realistic characters, she sometimes looses balance in one direction. But those struggles make her relate- and loveable.

Beautiful delicate little Rarity wandering near the edge of the forest. Tall trees putting their shadow on the green fuzzy grass on the ground. Rarity turns her gaze to the small meadow near the woods. Many lovely bright colored flowers blossom and weave with the weak breeze there. Sky is clear blue and sun is shining it's a perfect day. The gorgeous mare decides to go to that small opening and enjoy the beauty of the nature at its best.

What if I told you...

I know a girl IRL who's almost identical with Rarity that I'm friends with. Although I have been spike-zoned, I still feel it's pretty awesome.

 

I'm only friends by a bond of loyalty though. I'm kinda willing to be there for her when no one else is, even if she's done something absolutely despicable. Wish it was more than that... We don't have like anything in common, and she denies watching ponies even though I know she'd love it based on what she likes.

 Continuing my posts testing Rarity against the brightest literary opinions on what makes a character of substance:

“She is pure Alice in Wonderland, and her appearance and demeanor are a nicely judged mix of the Red Queen and a Flamingo.” ~ Truman Capote

 

So what does Truman mean exactly here? Well, he was comparing characterization through a description of Marilyn Monroe. You see, Marilyn entranced her fans by simultaneously being sexy, demure, and adorable. Her mannerisms invited curiosity. She came across as multi-dimensional to those who looked fully at her, yet was suited for the tenacity of singular and focused views. Truman was saying that presentation of character must be multifaceted like a diamond, but still accessible to allow anyone to appreciate him or her.

So, Rarity. Is she multifaceted? Again this is an easy answer. I’ll ignore discussing backstory and associations for now, as they are another aspect that deserves its own separate post. Instead, let us look at the presentation alone. On the surface, Rarity is presented as a sophisticated and cultured character. If you pay attention to the dialog and voice acting, Rarity gives more than dozens of hints that there are deeper emotions here, that one note elegance.

She breaks that flawless elocution that she has most of them at key moments. Ticket Master’s ecstatic scream of, “Yes!”, Rarity defending Spike against the dragons, unbridled disappointment and anger at Blue Blood, grabbing the bride’s bouquet, and many others like those noted examples are clues of an internalized subtlety. Rarity carries herself with grace like no other, but these quick outbursts show a humanity (ponyanity?) and different demonstrative side. You can argue that she also has an amazing grasp of self control, until her passions take her to a different state. They can also be played for charming comedy that prefer to enjoy her through a less complex lens.  

Rarity is a lady, but her poise, while not a front as some may suggest, is far from her only presented nature. This passionate pony quite easily passes the Capote Test - even with a damned handicap like ignoring backstory elements.  :grin2:

Great one! Shows how deeply layered Rarity is, and that one cannot do her justice by just describing her character with one word, like fashionista for example! Its that lovely bunde of elegance and adorable excitability and sweetness that is one of the reasons why i adore her so much.

(Once that animation error has been seen, it can never be unseen...)

 

Maybe you should put those posts in a blog, and put them in your signature. Would be a shame if they get lost.

I think beauty is interwoven into her very essence. She is lovely in body in spirit. And her generous heart radiates gorgeousness like a fire spreads warmth. These flames of passion and love touch everything she creates, and everypony near her, transform the world around her into a more ideal and pristine state.

 

Rarity shares her beauty, and does not hoard it for herself. She wants everyone to be as special and enchanting as she is. That is the core of her generous heart.

 

Like a beautiful sun, she herself inspires others to blossom into fair flowers.

I for one would totally volunteer to wash her mane and rest of her too I wonder how her mane would feel, the most precious of silk, soft, fuzzy so smooth. I would sink my hands into the perfect purple fuzzyness. Seconds  start feeling like days. It isn't possible to describe how her gorgeous mane would feel if touched by hand of mortal.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

 

The fair princess Rarity has been

ponynapped by the evil Galactic Empire.

Hoping to use her limitless allure and beauty to enslave the universe,

they will stop at nothing to turn her to the Dark Side.

 

Little did they know that the beautiful heart of Princess Rarity

is immune to the temptation of the dark force,

and that a rebel rescue team is already underway

to steal her away from the cluthes of the Empire.

 

Bringing the beloved pony back to her friends in the rebellion

will not only greatly raise morale,

but also would she be able to artifice great and mighty weapons

and armour for the cause of freedom.

 

Not wanting to risk to get the delicate unicorn hurt

the rebels send their best infiltrators into the space station that is certainly no moon.

All hope rests on their shoulders, for leaving Rarity in the

prisons of Darth Suri is not an option.
