The ultimate "no gf" song. This one seriously depresses me, but it's also one of my all-time favorite songs.

'Hospice' is one of the saddest albums ever. I highly reccomend it.

I second this. I mean, really. Also, their EP that came before Hospice, 'New York Hospitals' has some pretty sad stuff as well, though Hospice has the full story. Like this one, just a full step up from Bear/Epilogue's chord progression. Well, actually this came first, so I guess there other two songs are just a full step down.

Also, this. Love the outro where it's just all guitar feedback and very vague, inaudible screaming in the background. Doesn't sound like it too much, but that kinda makes it more beautiful to me.

Definitely gotta agree that Johnny Cash's cover of NiN's "Hurt" was one of the most stark, painfully introspective performances ever made.  Cash had more to regret during his lifetime than most people could hope to experience...accidentally killing his brother, being drafted into the Korean War, squandering his first marriage, drinking away his first decade of touring, going to prison for his pill habit...the list goes on.

Some other sad and touching songs (I'll try to keep them mainstream enough to be recognized)...

Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees (life can be wearisome, and a sense of the futility of it all can be overwhelming at times)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKd06s1LNik

Everclear - Father of Mine (my father in law cannot stand listening to this song, since it hits very close to home for him)

I've always found the slow ballad stuff to hit hard.  You also might find it kinda' corny, but the song 'The Sad Man With a Box' from Doctor Who is really good for getting yourself out of ruts.  It begins sad and ends pumping you up a bit.

Hope you manage to pick yourself back up.  :)

Insert The man who sold the world cover

Oh my glob, yes...  This song means so much to me.

Also, I have no idea how I missed this:

Also, this:

Lesson learnt: Coco songs are best songs.

Ron's Piece or The Last Rendez Vous performed by Jean Michel Jarre back in 1986.

This is from the anniversary concert for Houston.

JMJ's some good stuff man

And speaking of sad electronic music:

And pretty much any other song with Imogen Heap would work

Her vocals are so beautiful

And any other slow Deadmau5 song

Someone decided to cut up a sad animated film by Michael Dudok de Wit and time it with a sad song by VNV nation.

Maybe it's because I already watched the full film but... yeah, I cried. A lot.

The again, VNV nation have quite a few sad songs. *cough*Illusion*cough*

I think this might be more of personal thing for me, but Broken Iris in general are band I find really sad.
