Why are there two Lunas?!

Okay so I was watching Luna Eclipsed right after watching the the first two episodes of season one(I'm on a bit of a Luna kick right now.), and I noticed that there are two completely different Lunas in My Little Pony: Freindship is Magic. Why? O.o I kindof have a basic idea of the reasoning, but I am still utterly lost and confused after we see cute little pastel blue Luna and then all of a sudden shes almost black agaun and has the NightMare Moon mane and tail again. What the hay is going on here?

It's physical growth. In season 1 she is just a foal after escaping herself from being Nightmare Moon. In season 2 she grows to be about Celestia's size and stays that way.

Because one of them is her design from season 1 and the other one, the most current one, is her design from season 2. It's the same Luna though smile.png

The crew probably thought they could just change her design so she'd look cooler, but they didn't foresee every continuity contradiction being analyzed by a fanbase that actually cared too much about that stuff.

Damn Bronies.

She's aging everything she hasn't aged on the moon? If I recall correctly, the wavy hair only happened when Celestia was older. Same thing on Luna.

Its just her design how she was when she escaped from nightmare moon, I guess being imprisoned by her. And then several years after she is grown up and thats why she looks that way.

So basically its just her aging.

There only about six months between then and "Luna Eclipse." And we never see Princess Celestia at a young age. She is not a Foal because thats the age of the newborns in "Baby Cakes." And a Filly is the age of the CMC. Luna is ALWAYS a full grown Mare. Her size never changes. The only time shes ever anywhere near Princess Celestias size is when she is NightMare Moonn, and there she is much taller than Celestia. My personal theory is that the normal pastel blue Luna we see is what she has normally looked like since birth. Rember how she kept referring to herself as "we.".? Perhaps having her alter ego trapped within herself made her feel different and the in between form that she looks like now is just how she is most comfortable. It really is a mixture of her normal self and NightMare Moom if you really look at her. That just my personal theory. Also after Season 1 Faust quit so thats probably a HUGE part of it.

Six months? I hope I am misunderstanding what you're saying - but there was a year-long time lapse from the second episode (with small Luna) and Luna Eclipsed.

Friendship is Magic Part 2 aired 10/22/10.

Luna Eclipsed aired 10/22/11.

There are two Luna's because, when she was imprisoned inside the moon for millions of years she returned as Nightmare Moon. Then when she was defeated by the Elements of Harmony which freed her from her corrupt evil self. She became the same size as Celestia episodes later.

I don't know if there was ever a definite time period between S1 and S2 ever decided so we don't really know for sure. Celestia is probably older and also wasn't trapped for 1000 years inside nightmare moon I suppose. Then once she was freeded she grew, maybe even at an accelerated rate and mostly caught up to Celestia almost.

Y'all need to stop drop and look at the pictures I posted. The only difference aside from mane amd tail length and her colors is that shes slightly skinnier. Wavy mane has nothing to do with being a princess. Just look at Cadance. And it really is only a few months. Think about it. Every couple episodes is the end or beggining of a week based off of the ponies' dialogue. That would put it at around twenty weeks a season and that BARELY over three months. There is NO WAY aging is involved.

You would be surprised on how much time passes between episodes. Notice how it wasn't winter in Swarm of the Century, but they were wrapping it up in the next episode? It's probably just aging.

Well actually judging from the way she looks in the episode Luna is actually shorter then she normally is aswell, why her mane suddenly changes and her skin color even changes are a little more strange, but regardless I'm pretty bent on the fact she aged.

And between S1 and S2 they also had basically atleast a full year cycle or so of stuff due to the fact that the seasons shown in the episodes basically cycle around atleast once. Even if the episodes all seem to take place near the begging or end of the week, who knows exactly when. It could have been next week or 3 weeks from the last episode or maybe even months, heck the episodes could not be in chronological order at all really. And considering the fact the episodes are all mostly written by different writers that entirely possible to.

I think that the pastel Luna you saw in the season 1 episodes were her teenage stage as an alicorn princess since her banishment has prevented her from ageing. Now the Luna in Luna Eclipsed, I think she's become a young adult and NASA more translucent mane and tail that ripples and sparkles just like Celestia's. don't worry, Faust said that when Luna is grown up, she WILL NOT look like Nightmare Moon. ;)

Must of been quite the couple of years in between the time she recently escaped her Nightmare Moon form and the next time you see her in Luna Eclipsed, I assume she was in her pre-teen/teenager years in season one and grew up later as a young adult or full grown adult in Luna Eclipsed

Because she grew up. :)

It might have been just a few months for us in between seasons, but a lot more time than that could have passed in Equestria while we were waiting. It's a cartoon, after all.

We can babble and riff-raff back and forth on this issue, but I think that deep in our hearts, we all know who is truly to blame for this confusion.

or we can remember Hasbro only gives a fudge about toys and moneyyyyy.

then again, this generation seems to have mysteries and stuff that pop back later like in Harry Potter

Yeah, the crew just decided, for whatever reason, to re-design her for season 2.  I'm perfectly fine with the retroactively applied explanation that when she first appeared, her magic was in a weakened state and whatnot.  I definitely noticed she looked quite a bit different the first time I saw Luna Eclipsed, and I hadn't even seen her first appearance recently enough to remember clearly what she looked like.

I'm just thankful that once the design changed, it stayed that way.

Contrast that with Sal from Futurama who has two totally different designs (one pale, wearing a wife-beater, and one tan wearing a blue jumpsuit) which are used interchangeably throughout the show; which is never even acknowledged by the show's crew in the commentaries.

I don'[t think it's a case of aging - you don't age that much over a matter of months, especially when you're centuries old- I think it's just a case of her power coming back to her.  When Nightmare Moon took over, I think it basically drew out a lot of her power and replaced it with its own.  When Nightmare Moon was expunged from her, it took some months to come back.
