I've been around the furry fandom, and in my personal opinion: bronies are a lot like furries but with less drama, depression, creepy animal sex, and public embarrassment.

Haha. Give it time. This community is still very much in its infancy. The furry fandom, however, has been around for a very very long time. Having been involved in the furry fandom for many years, and even going to AC (Anthro Con), I'll just have you know that every single fandom has its good and bad sides. The MLP community is no exception to the rule.

Also, to answer the question about the topic at hand, no. Absolutely not. You can't base the similarities of two communities side by side and then say that they are technically the same. They are not.

Let's put this into perspective. Let's say for example that there are thousands of people who love Justin Bieber (as there are). Let's call them Bieber fans.

Now let's say there's thousands of people who love Micheal Jackson. Once again, this does exist. Let's call them M.J fans.

Now let's compare the two fan bases side by side.

Both of them idolize and are fans of a figure. Both of these figures make music and perform shows. (past tense since M.J is deceased)

You can't say that just because they are both similar, that MJ fans MUST like Justin Bieber, or vise versa. It just doesn't work like that.

Just because they both make music, doesn't mean they are the same thing. Such as this question that many of you seem to ask in regards to Furries V.S Bronies.

MLP= Animals with human characteristics

Furries= Animals with human characteristics

Both communities are VERY different and have different flavors to them. Just because they share a similarity does not mean in any way that Bronies are Furries, or Furries are Bronies.

Hope I didn't butcher this explanation. Have fun Bronies!

Well, both are fans of anthro stuff (yes, the ponies are technically anthro), and they both have a type of character to represent them (fursonas and bronies), but besides that, no. Sure, they both have original art/music, but so does every fandom.

So no, bronies aren't technically furries just because they're a brony.

Plus, part of being in a fandom is wanting to identify yourself with the fandom.

Yeah, I agree. I kinda screwed up on how I worded this. I MENT to say that they were similar but not the same. Ugh, I need to think more before I type.

No, Even though furries make clopart, fursuits, ect. of MLP, I don't think bronies are furries, I see bronies as any other person who likes cartoons like South Park, SpongeBob, The Simpsons, ect., Seeing bronies as furries is like saying people who love Looney Tunes or Mickey Mouse are furries.

it's like apples and oranges, bronies and furries, they are simmilar in some ways, both are fruits, but different in others, one has a core and the other has a rind, and of course, a person could be both, just like the orapple that the have to be working on in some genetic lab somewhere.

Alright. This thread seems safe....

My opinion: no

My arguments: 1) The ponies are not really anthropomorphic. Anthro is generally defined by an animal having physical characteristics and personality traits like a human. ponies have the latter, but certainly not the former. I feel to be considered anthro, they have to have both.

2) The brony culture is based on a show. Furry culture is based on a much broader idea. Bronies are bronies because MLP is a quality show and they enjoy it for it's qualities, not because there are colorful talking ponies in it (although the irony of that is, admittedly, rather sweet).

If you wish to comment on or refute these arguments, please do so without misrepresenting them.

Well considering the term "furry" seems to be in all sorts of weird contexts these days, I think it really only depends on your understanding of the term and what you think it applies to.

In my limited understanding of 'furries', I heard it's more anthro based. But again- I really don't know so feel free to correct me.

No. I don't think so. We like two different things. I mean we watch a cartoon with ponies that (?) doesn't even have fur haha. Again no it is not the same.

I see no similarites other than animals, but people always mistake Bronies for furries, and many people mistake furries for Bronies, however they do have one similarity, people dislike them because they're different.

They have many similarities.

1. the whole "we are accepting" mentality

2. A sexual side of the fandom

3. Personas (ponysonas and fursonas)

4. Fan Fiction (pony fan fiction and fur fiction)

5. Both have to do with animals with human characteristics in some way (ponies can't talk, it's a human characteristic)

6. Conventions

There. 6 ways bronies are similar to furries. I'm not saying that they are exactly the same, but they are similar in more than one way.

For me, not really. The ways in which society thinks about our fandoms are similar, both fandoms get a decent amount of hate, but I would not consider especially Bronies and Furries to have a lot in common. In fact, quite every easily outcastable (bleh, I hate making new words. I just wanna say that both communities are easy to frown upon for haters) community could be looked at as on a community similar to Bronies of Furries.

Yeah, we are. The only real difference is that we're not the most hated fandom on the internet, yet anyway. I feel bad that furries have been attacked by CSI, Jerry Springer and the meanies on 4chan. It's especially pathetic that so many bronies are vehemetly against furries. Even though we are the same thing: Fans of anthropomotphic animals.

I am a Brony. I love being a Brony, Twilight is best pony.

I am both, and although they share similarities, if you don't associate with one or the other you are not one. You are what you choose to be, they are just labels we choose to have.

All fandoms share similarities, they draw people together, have sexual sides, are generally seen as some shade of weird by the general public, etc. etc. etc.

I don't think bronies are furries. While we are similar in some aspects, bronies aren't like furries in other aspects, and vice versa. I'm not going to go too far into my opinions on this, but I'll leave my opinion at that.

Implying sex is morally wrong, and that a show teaching good morals debases sex. *sigh*

Besides that I agree that you are neither a furry nor a brony if you don't partake in it.

All fandoms are similar, furry=/=brony just like furry/brony=/=Whovian or Trekkie. Unless you want to be both a furry and a brony (I am), its your opinion and your choice to choose.

Fandoms attract all types, so you'll always get the full spectrum.

well both are compleatly different from one another and you don't need to be a fan of one to join the other, not all furry's are bronie's and not all bronie's are furry's

both are fandom's in there own right and a need to compare them to one another is kinda dumb

Most of the similarites can be traced back to most other internet fandoms.

So yes, furry and brony are similar, in the same way that Furries and trekkies are similar, How bronies and The sonic fanbase is similar etc.

They have similar traits but they are not the same.

I would say that the star wars or star trek fanbase is more closely related to the bronies be honest. Because that is based from media too.

I personally don't like to out them in the same category even though some like to.

I personally would say Im not a furry but a brony to people because I only like the ponies I don't like any of the very anthro art at all :P

But just a quick question, if i like Micky mouse am I a furry? I mean he's a mouse drawn as a human effectively :P

You are only a furry if you choose to be, no one can make you a furry but you. If just liking anthropomorphic characters made people furries then almost everyone on earth would be one, since they are all over the media/history/art and the like. Think back to your favorite cartoon shows and comic series, and maybe even some games, there is a good chance the characters are anthropomorphic something or others.

Human nature is honestly all I can find in terms of 'research'

also I found this quote:

"My choice is what I choose to do, and if I'm causing no harm, it shouldn't bother you. Your choice is who you choose to be, and if you're causing no harm, it shouldn't bother me." - Ben Harper

And I find that more people would be better off if they believed in that quote.

That quotation needs to be hung up and displayed as the rules before entering life, like when you enter a Minecraft server and they won't let you join until you read the rules. :P

Really though, people dislike what they don't understand, and most people don't want to take the time to look into it further.

I've been in the fandom for a while, and like anything in life there are all sorts of people.

I do not care for petty differences between fandoms. I enjoy whatever I want and get off to whatever I damn well please. Your definitions have no effect on me!

Anyway, never really been into furdom other than the ocassional furry porn thread on 4chan. Back when 4chan was worth visiting, that is :/

Uuugh, yeah. I find some of these points a bit wrong and confusing. I've known a lot of people into the Furry scene including friends. A good many of them usually pointed out that although not all of them are for the sexual type things that derive from it, it's sitll a part of it; there can be some type of thing like that in any convention or big gathering for Furries.

Other things I would like to point out -

~ Brony's are seen badly as cloppers? That's actually wrong there. Most people don't even know the term if you were to ask them. The negative thing Brony's are seen as is as overweight beard-necked or stringy creepy looking adult's wearing girly products while screaming their fandom at people. THAT'S what is actually shown. If asked about the perverse side of the fandom, most people outside of the scene looking in can see it happening but don't even know the terms such as clopping nor do they even have a sense of it being related to Furry's; that's just other people that know what a Furry is trying to rage at Brony's. (Furverts? I've never heard of that term, that's actually pretty funny)

~ Brony's wearing costumes like Furry's? Uh, no. You must only be thinking of the usual conventions and even then from what people tell me or what I've seen its only a small amount that do that. Even smaller in that only wear things like matching colors of the ponies and put on little ears/horns/wings.

~ The MLP ponies and other figures in the show are NOT Furry's. Are you serious? IF anything they'd be considered Anthromorphic seeing as that how they have personalities similar to some people. And because of this it's crossed into the Furry scene as well. That's why there's a mesh between the two fandoms coming about.

In the end, what's it matter what most people think? Yeah, it'd be nice to try and get rid of some of the social stigma that surrounds it, but to do that we just need to remember and not shove this stuff into peoples faces. That's the same with any fandom really.
