Retro*Derpy's oldies music thread

Recommended Posts

Personally, I generally prefer newer music (Dubstep, metal, etc.), but there are a select few songs that I enjoy that I could personally consider to be "oldies".

Hotel California

Stayin' Alive (XD yes, sounds cheesy, I know. But, I really do like this song.

That's pretty much it on my "oldies" list.

Hrm. Well, I think it depends on what you consider oldie music. Well, swing was a popular genre in the 1950's I think, but, I've only heard a couple of musicians from that era, such as Frank Sinatra. However, I've stumbled upon various, great swing artists, whom aren't that old. Here are some of them.

Parov Stelar - The Phantom (1930's Version)

Caravan Palace - Bambous

Parov Stelar - The Paris Swing Box

Parov Stelar - Catgroove

The oldies are the only tunes for me! Lovin' this thread!

I have a big love for the teen idols of the 50's & 60's. Not many seem to care 'bout 'em these days.

Ricky Nelson? He's THE teen idol in my eyes.

Can't forget about Dion & the Belmonts!

Well, 'oldies' is always shifting as the generations come through.

I consider the 70's to be plenty old because i was born in 1992.
It's all based on our own perspectives.

It's mind-boggling to think that there will be a time when our favourite current/modern artists eventually become the new 'oldies'.

The oldies are the best!

I'ts time for everyone's favorite Bobby Darin hit single... Mack The Knife!

...

Oops wrong one, I meant to post this:

Hell yes! Bobby Darin's Mack The Knife is one of the greatest songs ever done. Hands down. Such energy and class!

And who can forget about Ol' Bobby's other prominent hit? Beyond The Sea?

I've been searching for a few oldies lately that I suppose it's only appropriate I share some of these.

I remember listening to Davy Jones playing this song in person at Epcot (Disney World) a few years ago, my mom and I went there on vacation. She was really excited to hear him play, especially since it was her birthday. Never heard of the fellow before then, or of The Monkees (being born in the early 90's.) I thought he was very talented though and the music was pretty catchy.

... and I've just got to share this one as well. I've had it stuck in my head for the past day or so now.

Oh yeah, I'm gonna get some good use out of this thread! :D

For starters, here, have some classic Andrews Sisters!

I have a strange obsession with music from the 40s and 50s, even though I enjoy tunes from all decades. 40s and 50s music just strikes a strange chord with me, I feel like I'm in a whole 'nother world whenever I hear it.

When I was on the highway headed for San Francisco, I was briefly treated to a delightful radio station dedicated entirely to classic big band from back in the day. Unfortunately, the station turned to static before I entered the city, and I have been unable to find a similar station in my area.

Well, at least we have the internet to pick up the slack where real life fails.

Also for kicks, I found a 50s remake of Whistle from Flo Rida img-1471399-1-laugh.png

That is so awesome. I checked the guy's channel hoping to find more covers like that, but unfortunately it seems to be the only one he did in that style. :(

What the hell is with some people in this thread posting Pink Floyd and the Beatles? Go home, kids. Those aren't Oldies. I swear, I hate the way my generation thinks sometimes. I'm a pretty big Oldies nut and seeing that just kind of makes me want to bury my face in my hooves.

Anyway, my fellow Oldies connoisseurs should know these gems:

Like i said before, the term "oldies" is incredibly subjective when it comes to music.

To me, Beatles ARE old because i was born in the 90's.

Just because someone is younger than you, thus their 'oldies' are fresher than yours, it doesn't technically disqualify their choices from being oldies.

Could you please show me the rule for this thread that specifically states a time period?
No? Then let people post their idea of oldies, while you post yours. Live and let live.

I just think it's very selfish to make an invisible cut off line for everyone else just because of your own views.
The Beatles are a dinosaur band to me, and nothing will change that. And that's okay.

I'm also a 90s kid. I'm just not one of those kids my age or younger(aka the age group that knows everything about life by default) who considers anything before they were born to be the audio equivalent of hieroglyphics.

Wikipedia's definition of the word:

music from a period of about 15 to 55 years before the present day

Using that logic, the Backstreet Boys are Oldies.

Try saying the aforementioned bands are Oldies to your grandparents or even your parents. They'll just shake their head. I actually just had this discussion about a week ago with my parents and they agreed with me.

Yeah, it's a subjective concept, but just about 90% of anything involving music is. In the end, it's up to the majority.

But just for clarification's sake: I don't have a problem with you or your personal taste in music. The Beatles and Pink Floyd are old and are classic(though I don't like either band personally, I'm just using the term classic to describe the majority's opinion), using the term "Oldies" is a stretch. Anyhoo, back on topic.

Fair enough, i totally see where you're coming from when you put it that way.

I think the difference between 'old music' and full blown 'oldies' was where my confusion came from in the first place.

Found one of them. When I was listening to the big band station, this song came on. There were also a lot of pure orchestral pieces, and a song by the Andrews Sisters that I just can't remember for the life of me.

This Atlas fellow. He thinks he knows classical music. The people of Rapture rally around him like he's some kind of damned musical genius. I need to post true classics to drown out Atlas's noise.
