One could build a bridge with all these Rarity defense posts...then one could put that bridge over their dislike of Rarity and get over it.  :maud:

Please build that bridge people. :maud:

Also Rarity is generous, because that's why shes in the damn show; to be generous.  :maud:

How about this for a topic:  Why are there so many topics asking why characters are hated?  I never see any hate!  I love every pony!

I think this topic should be locked, to be honest.

All it can be like from this point forward is like this:

Rarity Love

Rarity Love

Rarity Love

Rarity Hate

10,000 Rarity defense posts

Rarity Love

etc.

Don't really think that counts as people always hating on her, now that I look at it :please:

@@ScribbleSquabble until you can break down for me the elements of style and draw parallels between literary structure and this show, and do your research on authorial intent, you may want to drop the analysis tag you are using. You really missed the mark on a lot there, and basically ... it's just a surface opinion.

You want to see analysis of someone breakdown characterization, structure, intent, and theme?

Ugh, not this pony. Look how purple her mane is for a start.

post-22929-0-81689900-1409142871_thumb.jpg

Just look at that, forcing her sister to get her hair brushed too, so evil and mean. Bleh, more like element of eggs than element of generosity :P

I think people hate her because they are jealous of her mane, cause its awesome. And also because they don't have a dragon with a crush on them. Yes, this is the reason. Have some eggs *throws eggs at everyone*

I think you guys are over reacting to what  @@ScribbleSquabble  said. He isn't saying that Rarity is some kind of selfish prick, or that she has to be perfect all the time. Hes making the argument that Rarity's faults tend to be more noticeable than some of the others. When she goes against her element, it stands out. More so than some of the others. When Applejack lied in Party of One, for example, I barely noticed. Rarity tends to be a bit of a drama queen, and that's much more visible and in your face than her being generous. I think that's the primary reason that she gets the hate that she gets.

Also:

I was only giving a possible response to the question posed in the topic. Do any of these things matter to me in judging her overall character? Not really

Lets not jump down the guys through, yeah? I don't think its warranted. Nobody is trying to sling mud on Rarity.

I don't hate any of the ponies, but I tend to gravitate towards the characters that I can relate to on some level and well, Rarity just doesn't fit the bill. Fluttershy, Twilight and to some extent Dashie are the ones I relate to the most.

@Banul, Perhaps, however my points were less of a defense of the character and more to illustrate proper analysis of characterization and story structure.

If my neighbor comes over and says, "Man that city council are a bunch of morons ... opinion opinion opinion", and I think he is wrong,  I'm not going to cast aspersions at the person. However, if I read an Op Ed attacking the city council, and the argument is flawed like my neighbor's, my reaction is going to be a bit more critical as the Op Ed columnist is passing him self off as a professional.

Be careful of placing credentials in your signature ...  without the ability to further elucidate on your approach. As it is, I stand behind my post directing the user to greater resources. I look forward to the day when a Brony Analyst reaches the communicative heights of narrative review that exists in other circles. We are not close though.

Also @Jeric, you have all the right in the Internet to disagree with my analysis, but let's not turn this into something personal by attacking what I do just because you disagree with something I said.

I did mean to mention Rainbow, dunno how I forgot.

So, how about that pride that i talked about in the rest of my post and that you completely ignored?

I chalk that up to the writers not knowing what to do with those characters once their dreams are actually realized, rather than those characters not wanting that to happen.

I don't think Rarity really needs to move to Canterlot. She's been killing it with high profile clients right from Ponyville. A business trip now and then, and she's all set. As for Rainbow Dash, being a Wonderbolt will make her pretty busy. I don't think that's going to keep her away from her friends, though. She can travel wherever she wants, and do so at the speed of sound. She should have plenty of time to visit her friends.

Thats a lazy way to see it.

Even if the writers do not know what to do with the characters if they reach their goal, they still have to think of reasons why they don't give up everything to reach it. And they made reasons for them.

And you really don't think that Rarity would love to live in Canterlot or Manehatten, that she would like it when the high society would eat out of her hooves?

Of course it would help her business if she would move to these cities, and it would help her fame and reputation. She could bath in the adoration of the nobility, something she really, really enjoys. She would have the things that happened in Sweet and Elite ALL THE TIME!

Rarity does not need to move away, but it would help her immensly. Rarity wants her dream to happen, but she hold herself back.

You blatantly disregarded other characters who made the same mistake, twisted things out of context and accused her of conspiring to use Fluttershy's fame as nothing more than personal gain despite direct lines from the show refuting that and you having no evidence.

I really don't buy this. There were MANY errors in your judgement making her look worse than she really is. I can't accept this, I'm sorry.

Also @Jeric, you have all the right in the Internet to disagree with my analysis, but let's not turn this into something personal by attacking what I do just because you disagree with something I said.

And this just irks me, to be honest. You're not even acknowledging the points we made that directly refute every single one of the incredibly overblown criticisms you leveraged at her and just trying to tell us to back off because it's your opinion, essentially.

Just because it's your opinion doesn't make it correct at all. You still need to defend it. We know it's your opinion. What else would it be?

Why are you refusing to see things in a different light, though? That's the real question. Why are you sticking to your beliefs when they've all been challenged?

We need reason here. Not just "it's my opinion."

What led to the arguments weren't the reason behind the claims he made, although it's still frankly hard to see it any other way, but the claims he made in general. Give a second to pull a few up, or, better yet, just go look at the points me and Sunny Fox made to go against his criticisms. THAT'S where the main problem is.

Not a personal attack. I don't know you at all. I just said that your analytical approach needs improvement. I also provided a valid template for thorough analysis so that you could improve. It doesn't matter if you are discussing the meta context of a character or allegory within the show, or the fandom impression of Rarity, I would feel the same way.

I do hold those that consider themselves as part of the analysis community to a higher standard ... their art tool is their insight. if that descriptor doesn't fit you then I duly apologize.

Actually that is a valid reason to dislike a character. We all view our world through a our own personal filter. I have my own characters (not on this show) that I have an issue with because of how they are presented and how they remind me of people I don't enjoy the company of. It also works in the reverse too. A large reason why I love Rarity, AJ, Scootaloo etc is because of personal experiences that help raise my awareness and appreciation of some of their more subtle aspects.

No one should disparage you for your reasoning.

Your viewpoint is understandable. However I would like to point out that the analysis community isn't omnipotent, and [most of us] don't do videos just to push what we thought of MLP onto others. At the end of the day, we are analyzing a piece of media and interpreting it subjectively. The only objective things we have is what MLP has given us. We present analytical arguments to get people to think about the content they are watching, but it's up to the viewer wether or not they take what we say into consideration the next time they view a piece of MLP content. We do this not to be the utmost authority on MLP (not that I think you were implying that), but because it's fun to look deeper into the things we enjoy and learn why we like/dislike something. If we weren't really just having fun, the majority of us wouldn't be putting so much time into making videos :).

I apologize if I took what you said as a personal attack. We cool bro? *offers bro-hoof*

Somehow I found this a bit bothersome. Not the, whatever that was, per se, but you're claiming to not be omnipotent and you can be wrong, yet you don't seem to be acknowledging what anyone else has said to you about the actual topic and it feels like you've been doing massive damage control this whole time - I don't really understand that, to be honest, and I mean that sincerely

You're not listening to what other people are saying. If you were, you'd be acknowledging what we originally said about your opinions on the topic at hand, but instead you've been backpedaling and saying stuff like this:

t the end of the day, we are analyzing a piece of media and interpreting it subjectively

My personal opinion on this matter is that subjectivity can only be considered correct if they find entertainment in the subjective opinion, and you're essentially admitting to all of your criticisms you posted earlier as to trying to degrade her for entertainment.

Can you please stop dodging every thing people have said to you in this thread and actually talk about your opinions as opposed to trying to apologize and then say "it's just my opinion?" I'm personally really feeling insulted by the fact you're not even taking anything we said earlier into account and saying all of this stuff without even slightly acknowledging you might not be correct.

Haters gonna hate :derp:  Apparently they have nothing better to do. If you ask me, it's kind of silly (even desperate) to hate a character from a cartoon. Especially from a cartoon like MLP.

You know, there's a difference between just disliking/hating something (eventually expressing your opinions if asked) and not doing anything about it and spending your free time insulting cartoon characters, writing shit about them and often provoking the fans of said character. What's the purpose of it? Are people seriously feeling better doing this? That's why topics like that one exist. Because people instead of focusing or more important or positive things spread hatred. Or state their opinions as facts, often without giving the examples why they think so. Like mentioned before "Rarity isn't generous" even though she can't be the Element of Generosity if she isn't and she did many generous things in the series.

No, we can't decide if we like something or not, but we're talking about a cartoon with colorful horses. "Hate" is a very strong word and hating something that doesn't exist is kind of silly. And if we already hate something - it's up to US what we're going to do about it. If we're just going to focus on something more positive or waste our time ruining others fun.

I apologize that I hadn't responded until now. Yes, we cool. I also realize that perhaps I came across as a bit elitist. I do think that the Analyst community does have a lot to offer to their viewers and the fandom in general. At the end of the day we are all fans of the same show.

  • 2 months later...

I'm not really sure. I can only speculate that she comes across as a diva? Like things have to be a certain way, kind of egotistical in a way maybe? I'm not hating or anything, I love Rarity and her character but that's kind of why AJ and Rarity clash a little here and there. They argue with each other because they are seemingly opposite from one another. AJ likes to get dirty, Rarity hates it.

AJ: "I dare you not to comb your hair a hundred times before bed."

Rarity: "And I dare you to comb yours once."

There isn't a single character in MLP I hate, it's just that perhaps people have a bad experience with certain types. Like some characters remind us of someone we know that we don't like. I personally don't hold grudges like that and I accept people/ponies for who they are. :D
