Hey everypony! My internet has been down for about two weeks now and I've only just got it back. It was awful and I found myself unable to perform the most menial of tasks  because everything is online. This got me thinking, do we rely on the internet too much? What do you guys think?

Yes! Last night Frontier (my internet provider) went offline for the whole state. Sure, everyone who didn't have frontier was fine, but unfortunately for me my Internet was down. I was so bored! I just wanted to hop on youtube or check the mlpforums. I killed time by finally starting to write my fanfic. Anyways, yes we are pretty dang reliant on the internet. If you need to know something you don't go to the library and look for a book on it, you google it.

Yes, I need my internet, not only for personal uses but for work as well.

The company I work for relies a lot on internet connection and communications. I have to be able to sent out Bids and stock to customers and other branches of the company all via internet connection.

I remember loosing my internet for a few days because my router was busted, I almost went insane haha

I think we rely on the internet a lot but I'm not sure if that translates to "too much". Yes, we complain when things go wrong but the majority of the time it does work and it's very useful. It is probably because of its utility and reliability why it IS so relied upon.

Hm... As my own person, I would say; yes. Yes I do.

However, as a society, the internet is pretty much alternative media and it has made it much more difficult for governments and corporations alike to hide what they don't want you to find out while at the same time, both entities are dependent on the internet to even function in these times. Here I would say that our society of sickness could use to be more reliant in the internet because we if that was not the case, both governments and corporations would have agreed by now to just shut it all down by now, I'm sure.

Yes, I think we do need the internet. I mean, we even came up with a term to learn something: "Google it." That just proves that we need the internet. And also for Forums..

I would say: I do.

I use the internet ALL THE TIME. My internet was down a few days back, and I found myself doing nothing but drawing and reading Jurassic Park. I found it quite monotonous and tedious.

PFFFFFTTTT. You can never have too much Internet.

Sometimes. A lot of us break down whenever we lose service, as OP stated.

Then again, it's the one of the greatest inventions of the modern age, and it has benefited our society so, so much.

I think sometimes we do, yes. When I'm trying to prove something right to someone, I realise that I can just easily pull out my phone and google it, knowing the real answer within seconds. I use it all the time, actually. Whenever I see a word I don't know I search it up. And there's also internet forums, like this :P Too dang addicting.

Most certainly yes! When the Internet goes down for a few hours (let alone a few days) most people end up getting bored no knowing what to do. Beyond that I personally think that the Internet has made people lazy, they don't learn how to do something so much as remember where to find the information. That's not very useful when the powers out.

I know I do. The internet is the only place where I actually have a social life first of all. Without it, I'd be in big trouble. Other than that, it provides me with hours of entertainment and information if I need it. A great example of entertainment would have to be these forums. :P

The internet is certainly the most used form of communication today. It is used quite a bit, but I'm not sure if we rely on it "too much".

I suppose it's true that if the internet suddenly went away, there would be major problems worldwide.

Also, I spend 20 hours a day on the internet and is that a problem

Yes. I remember moving and I didn't have internet for a week. I couldn't do anything since I didn't update Steam, I couldn't watch tv because I didn't have cable yet, and I didn't feel like riding being outside in 100 F weather.

Well in this day and age, of course we do, me included. There are simply too many things that it's needed for to not heavily rely on it, and when I didn't have it it a couple times in the past few months I gotta admit, it did depress me a bit.

Well yes its relied on a whole lot. However its for a good reason, its a very valuable resource, for communication and research and entertainment, and well like everything.

So yes its relied on heavily, but at the same time its a valuable resource, and like why shouldn't we to a good extent?

I suppose we need to have some form of a backup in case, but the internet is a great invention, so the fact its used so much isn't surprising, its for a good reason.

Hehe yeah, without the internet for forums my life would be missing something...

I think we do rely on the internet too much, and start to get addicted to it. But as for others, they are fine without the internet. Without the creation of the internet, we wouldn't be able to do research on new discoveries.

To an extent I agree, we are addicted to the internet. One of the first things we do when booking a holiday is check if there is wifi, which is madness considering we are supposed to be having a break away from real life!

So very true, with FB, google/google maps and forums as such, you can do anything and find out anything.

Online shopping is also a big contributor to this now, its so easy to just go buy something really cheap and have it delivered that it can become an addiction to try and hunt down those web deals :P !

Let me think.... Yes. We do. But relying on the internet so much isn't necessarily a bad thing. It is a very useful tool and it allows you to learn about many things. Being on the internet every minute of every day is a bad thing. You really should try to get out more if that is you, if not for social means, just for your own health. But, a moderate amount of time on the internet is fine. Plus, a lot of people work through the internet, so jobs are created and maintained because of it. Overall, internet is a great thing!

Definitely, without the internet this forum wouldn't exist, EQDaily wouldn't exist, the brony culture may have never begun, and we would still rely on written mail.

I can't even live without internet. I've spent most of my summer vacation so far on the internet and I've hardly gone outside. Maybe I have a bit of an addiction ._.

...I'm sorry. "Everything is online"? Where do you live?

Last I checked, tons of things were offline. Books, TV, stores, banks, restaurants, encyclopedias...

There's no such thing as relying on it too much. It's a tool. That's why it exists. (Note: I have severe internal issues and social difficulties and as such, have been known to break down when cut off from the internet as it is my primary means of interaction. But that's less an over-reliance issue and more a "I really need to get some counseling" issue. XP)
