Children of the Night

Basically, Luna wanted to help out the poor fillies hurt the most after Discords rule, and make a new kingdom, helping them out. But Celestia refused, thinking a divide in kingdoms would lead to a divide in harmony and togetherness which was sorely needed.

Luna says, screw that, I'm doing it anyway. According to the description, most likely Celestia's reaction to that was one of the reasons Luna's banishment become necessary, so Celestia basically created her own enemy.

Feeling so bad for poor Luna right now. img-2009148-1-sad.pngimg-2009148-2-sad.pngimg-2009148-3-sad.png

Celestia is often portrayed within the fandom as a somewhat cruel, self-centred ruler while Luna is the princess who faces Celestia's abuse.

As a Celestia fan, I find it unfair how people treat her like this, especially since she is supposed to be shown in the actual show as kind, respectful and just plain lovable.

I completely agree with you. I don't understand the hate towards Celestia, she's so, so kind. And clever. And just wonderful. <3 I love the Princess sisters so much because they love each other. They have a great, long history of ruling together, marred my arguments and tragedy, like every sibling couple does. And then they found sisterhood again. It warms my heart. wub.png

Your thread seems to discuss Children of the Night. For convenience, I've merged it with a larger thread that discusses the same thing. :)

Well animation wise this is the best one I have seen in a long time. This looks almost as good as the show. But story wise, I have to say it was weak. To me it just seems like Luna just kidnapped a bunch of kids. Still overall it was alright.

Oh yeah. They sure looked terrified and were crying their eyes out, especially that poor colt who was disturbed from under his cardboard box 'home' /End sarcasm.

But seriously, those kids were orphans and, in one case, homeless. None of them looked the least big unhappy about going away with Luna, who was just trying to help out the most affected by Discords rule.

Well if you were in their situation and an all mighty alicorn came down and said, I will take you to a wonderful place, you would most likely not complain about it. Also for all we know magic is behind this. Luna did nock out everyone in town and the song she is singing was used in, Hocus Pocus, which was used to hypnotize children.

For me if there was more to the ending I would like it more, but it did not give a good ending for me.

Do keep in mind that the Celestia we see is in the present. 1000 years is no short period of time, and we have no idea how she was like back then and how much she's changed over the years. For a perfect example: The royal canterlot voice. It was apparently a tradition to yell at your subjects when addressing them 1000 years ago, but could you EVER imagine present-day Celestia doing it? I certainly can't. And that's because a lot of things have changed since the Discord's and Sombra's rule, and all the towns and cities that have risen up since.

Do I think Tyrantlestia was ever a thing? Maybe, maybe not. But even current-day Celestia can be cruel. Celestia found Fluttershy's distress over Philomena 'dying' amusing, looking sad and broken up over the pile of ashes, then telling her bird in a joking voice to stop playing around when it apparently burned to death. That should not be the subject of a practical joke.

Or how about the Crystal Empire two-parter. Luna wanted to go along to help. Celestia said no, totally snubbing her sister, which doesn't seem kind or respectful, for the sake of Twilight's 'test', despite the fact that it could have meant the destruction of Equestria if Twilight failed. And if Spike hadn't come along, Twilight WOULD have failed, both at the 'worst fear' spell, and the spell that stops you from using magic to get away when you touch the crystal heart. Whether Luna could have actually helped if she went along is irrelevant. Celestia still risked the safety of a kingdom and all it's inhabitants by not allowing additional assistance in the form of one of the most powerful magical beings around.

While the video made me pissed off at Celestia, I don't hate her. but she is far from the perfect ruler.  Still, that said I don't actually really have anything against Celestia. I think the knee jerk reaction of 'Do something extremely minor, CELESTIA SEND YOU TO MOON' is stupid if anyone's actually being serious when they say it.

@, @@CrystalRose, Speaking as a Celestia fan myself, neither of you paid proper attention to the prologue of Children of the Night, and I recommend both of you to rewatch it from beginning to end while concentrating on the details.

The prologue is very Stockholm Syndrome-esque with one of the children telling the story in his perspective. Princess Luna wishes to create a colony to help the children who were orphaned by Discord's chaos. Princess Celestia, too, has a very good reason to reject Luna's request: To her, creating the colony would divide the two sisters and create the chaos and disharmony that Discord previously bestowed upon them.

Events like these actually make both characters sympathetic. Neither of them are at fault. Even though Luna's the central character here, both are thoroughly portrayed as three-dimensional, imperfect rulers who can't agree on how to revive the struggling kingdom. Celestia wants to help her society in any way she can by keeping everyone together. Luna wants to help, too, by transferring orphaned and forgotten children from their personal hellholes and making them feel worthy and relevant again. Luna believes she's doing the right thing, which fits her character to a "T."

Luna believes she's doing the right thing to help Equestrian society and the Children of the Night, but as the saying goes, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." This is exactly the case here, because anger and jealousy don't build up overnight. It takes time. CotN bridges the gap between turning Discord into stone and Luna's jealousy consuming her into becoming Nightmare Moon eventually. Combined with the teardrop that flowed down the Fausticorn's statue, it foreshadows Luna's eventual jealousy and eventual transformation perfectly.

I like Children of the Night, what I hate is the fact that Luna is seen as the hero by fans. She is not a hero in this, she's kidnapping foals! They were in bad circumstances but that doesn't give her the right to flip the law off and completely ignore Celestia's good advice. Another problem, people seem to forget that Luna turned into a genocidal maniac yet these ponies still love her. What!? I interpreted the video as horror, akin to the Slenderman or the way the song was actually used in "Hocus Pocus"

In case you weren't there, this thread used to be a separate thread up to this post before a moderator merged it. I was mainly replying to how Never2muchpinkie claimed to hate Celestia after watching Children of the Night, and I was referring to most fanon projects within the fandom in general.

I should probably quote Never2muchpinkie's reply in my last comment.

@, I read the post before answering. It doesn't change my overall point. You still misconstrued Celestia's portrayal in Children of the Night (while stereotyping part of the fandom in the process), and I suggest you go back and watch it again. Celestia isn't a tyrant in the video. Her portrayal and reason why she rejected Luna's request make sense are are very in character despite the Stockholm Syndrome-like narration.

Re-read Never's post. He never said he hated Celestia in his opening post. All he said was he felt bad for Luna after watching the video, no more, no less, and his subsequent posts confirm it. You completely nullified your whole point to him by thinking about stuff that isn't even there.

I'm not specifically talking about Children of the Night. I was referring to how some, not all, but some people portray Celestia as I explained in many fanon projects. I probably should've also mentioned that the name of the thread was something along the lines of "I now hate Celestia after watching Children of the Night".

I could probably say that my post originally had nothing to do with Children of the Night, but since the thread was merged, I can see it has caused some slight confusion.

It's probably one of my favorite animations created (that and Make it Special). It's very mystifying and well.. it's cool how Luna just kidnaps takes these colts and fillies up into the sky into some place we never see.

Yeah, I was a bit overwhelmed by the beauty of the video, and it made me angry at Celestia, but I don't actually hate her. It was a heat of the moment thing. I thought Luna was doing a great thing, and Celestia tore her down. Really hope there's some kind of continuation to the video, because as of current it seems more that Luna is doing the right thing. But the guy you were talking to, Dark Quivet, made some good points.

Yeah, Mars Brownie was right. I didn't know there was already a COTN topic, so I made a topic saying I hated Celestia after watching it, but like I just said to him it was more of a heat of the moment thing, and you made some good counterpoints. Since there was already a topic about it, my post was merged with this topic, and so the topic title isn't there, and that's what he was talking about.  Since you seem to have good at analysing things, could you check out my other post a little further up and tell me your views on it? I talk about Celestia and some of her behavior in the show.

I don't think Children of the Night is that black and white. She's not kidnapping random foals with malicious or selfish intent, she's taking forgotten foals from orphanages and off the street in an attempt to give them a better life. These particular actions may or may not have lead to her becoming Nightmare Moon, but even if that were the case, it was unintentional and indirect.

This story isn't simply about "good and bad" and "write and wrong", it's showing that there's a gray area in between, where there's an opportunity which could lead to either good or bad. Luna took advantage of the opportunity with the belief that she was helping, and even if these actions did indirectly lead to the whole Nightmare Moon incident, she wouldn't of have known that, and in the short term, she did create some good.  They love her because she gave them a better life. (At least that's what the film insinuated)

You're right, she's not the hero in this, but she's also not the villain, and neither is Celestia. The story isn't about good guys and bad guys, though.

I'm not saying she's the villain or the hero, just that it annoys me that she's seen as a pure hero with no faults
