Honestly, I don't see why people care so much about the sexual orientation of the characters. If they're gay, then fine. So long as they keep acting normally and the way they were, then who cares? Either way, it's the same person, and it's not like they're going to get into relationships in the show any time soon.

But its not explicitly stated that she isn't though, just that is isn't fair to assume it because of superficial observations, which I personally agree with. My opinion on her orientation has nothing to do with her appearance or the fact she is into sports though, but actual characterization both in the comics and in the Daring don't episode. 

There is also the fact that the characters have evolved since Lauren left the show, she also said Dash wasn't fit to be a sister for scootaloo and clearly that isn't the case.

First, I don't give a character a sexual orientation because of their character sinse character and sexuality are two different things without any context to each other. So, I don't say that Rainbow is a lesbian because she is masculine, Fluttershy is asexual because she is shy or Pinkie Pie is Pansexual because she is random. That doesn't make sense for me. I have my one headcanon and I look which characters can have a realistic relationship in my opinion and which character make some hints to what gender. There are my results. And like I said, it's only my headcanon and opinion.

 

-Twilight Sparkle: Bisexual with more interests into stallions (strong interest to Flash Sentry and a little bit to Celestia (the Student who like her teacher a little bit more as normally XD)). 

-Fluttershy: Homosexual (Interest in Tree Hugger (I mean, she look at her and don't notice Discord)/ I also like the idea that the most feminin character is a lesbian and not the clishé ones)

-Pinkie Pie: Heterosexual (She has interests in older male griffons (not the figure) and in my Headcanon, she has an (platonic) relationship to Chees)

-Rarity: Latent bisexual with more interests into stallions (on the one side, she was falling in love for Blueblood and Trenderhoof, but on the other side, she don't have a problem to snuggle with an other mare and I think, she would fall in love for a mare. I also like the idea that the most heterosexual acting pony has an secret crush into females)

-Rainbow Dash: heterosexual (I think she would make a good relationship with Soarin. The fact, that she is masculine don't make a lesbian out of her for me, I also knows some masculine women who are totaly straight and on the other side, I knows more feminin women who are lesbian)

-Applejack: Bisexual/Asexual (She was really hard for me to choose because I don't have any submittals in the show, so, thats why I say, she is bisexual (or maybe asexual).)

Rainbow Dash: Totally bi. I don't think she'd lean towards pan, she's a bit close-minded.

Pinkie Pie: Aesexual, panromantic. Pinkie doesn't really pique me as particularly interested in anything but relationships.

Applejack: Not sure, she seems to be uninterested in relationships. She's either aesexual or hetero, it really seems.

Twilight: Panromantic. She seems likely to like females and other genders as well, she's a bit distant to others (she's really grown out of that though) but pretty open-minded. I don't see her interested in anything but romance as well.

Fluttershy: Totally pan. She totally seems to be all about the romance, and seems likely to bond with anyone that way who shows her deep affection.

Rarity: I can't see Rarity as anything else but straight. We've seen her over and over again seek out male gaze, and her persistent crushes.

To be honest, I think they are all straight and I can't see them being presented as anything eles, since this is a kids show and homophobic parents would effect the ratings. I would like an episode like that though, without it being stereotypical.
