The Effects of Music

"Music can make a man feel like a God, but that same music can rip him down and make him feel like dirt"

~My old Music Teacher.

img-1744476-1-131476971185_zps69701126.g

Music is a gateway to the soul I have be told, and over the years of living I can sit here and say, yes it is. Music is much stronger then we think it is, it can give you strength, it can mend a broken heart.

That same music can take it all away from you, make you feel weak, useless, and even break your heart.

Music is so much stronger then we really think, most ponies its just a job, some its a way of life and sadly to others music is useless.

Now I'll move to the point of this, I would love to hear about 5 songs that make you feel,

-empowered!

It really depends person to person.

Music personally has had some impact on my life but really it hasn't had any significant effects. I play it usually when I'm doing repetitive tasks to mix things up a bit.

I would like to make a list, but the big problem is that I can't really pin down 5 songs that make me feel anything of the above. I much prefer listening to albums as a whole and I very rarely listen to individual songs.

Also, I always interpret music in a more complex way. While I may find a particular song/album sad, I always find a second meaning in the thing. Why does it make me feel that way? What is the band/artist trying to tell me? It usually leads to several conclusions, not only one. Due to this, I feel like there are several types of sadness, anger and happiness in music. Often a mix of those emotions

Flood by Boris is a great example. Depending on how you interpret it, it could be a roller coaster of emotions. The most straightforward feeling is sadness. It makes me feel very sad. But then I think to myself: "Why does it make me sad?". Because the main theme is death, this album is about death. But the idea of death always fills me with a feeling of hope, as you're free from the chains of this earth to find peace at another place. (See what I did there? I reflected and found several emotions)

Hm... Let's see... Well, since it's just ~5, I shall list a few among my favourites.  :derp:

In no particular order...

Empowered:

1) Rossini - Act I Finale of 'Il barbiere di Siviglia' (The Barber of Seville) [Mi par d'esser con la testa]

2) Mozart - Act II Finale of 'Le nozze di Figaro' (The Marriage of Figaro) [Voi, signor, che giusto siete]

3) Rossini - Act I, Aria of Don Magnifico with Chorus, 'La Cenerentola' (Cinderella) [Conciossiacosacché]

4) Bellini - Act I Finale of 'Norma' [Perfido!... Or basti!...]

5) Mozart - Act II Sextet, 'Don Giovanni' [Mille torbidi pensieri]

(Even though Mozart's my favourite composer, I have to agree that Rossini's music is generally very empowering... It's always exciting trying to conduct along with Rossini's music...  :derp: )

Sad:

1) Mozart - Act II, The Countess' Aria, 'Le nozze di Figaro' (The Marriage of Figaro) [Porgi, amor, qualche ristoro]

2) Mozart - Act II, Pamina's Aria, 'Die Zauberflöte' (The Magic Flute) [Ach, ich fühl's, es ist verschwunden]

3) Mozart - Second Movement of Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major, K. 488

4) Mozart - Act I, (First half of) The Queen of the Night's Aria, 'Die Zauberflöte' (The Magic Flute) [Zum Leiden bin ich auserkoren]

5) Mozart - Act IV, Barbarina's Aria, Le nozze di Figaro' (The Marriage of Figaro) [L'ho perduta, me meschina]

Make you want to dance:

1) Johann Strauss Jr. - Frühlingsstimmenwaltzer [Voices of Spring]

2) Johann Strauss Jr. - Die Fledermaus [The Bat]

3) Johann Strauss Jr. - An der schönen blauen Donau [by the Beautiful Blue Danube]

4) Mozart - Act I, Tamino's Aria, 'Die Zauberflöte' (The Magic Flute) [Wie stark ist nicht dein Zauberton]

5) J. S. Bach - Badinerie from Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor, BWV 1067

(And yeah, Johann Strauss Jr. is indeed the king of composing dance pieces.  ;) )

Make you feel happy:

1) Salieri - Act II, Europa's Aria, 'Europa riconosciuta' (Europa Recognised) [Ah! lo sento]

2) Mozart - Act I, (Second half of) The Queen of the Night's Aria, 'Die Zauberflöte' (The Magic Flute) [Du, du, du wirst sie zu befreien gehen]

3) Mozart - Third Movement from Motet 'Exsultate Jubilate', K. 165 [Alleluja]

4) Mozart - Act I, Figaro's and Susanna's Duet, 'Le nozze di Figaro' (The Marriage of Figaro) [Cinque, dieci]

5) Salieri - Act IV, Aspasia's Aria, 'Axur, re d'Ormus' (Axur, King of Ormus) [son queste le speranze]

Generally, be it inclusive or exclusive of the aforementioned songs/pieces, the pieces that would constitute these four categories would tend to come from Mozart, Rossini, Salieri, Johann Strauss Jr., Felix Mendelssohn, Joseph Haydn, Bellini and quite a few other favourite composers of mine. (Too many to list down though.  :derp: )

tl;dr... Musical classicism ftw!  :P

@MaestroNep9997, You're my hero! I also love classical music, as I learned to play double bass in high school. Though I must say even our tastes in the classical genre differ quite a bit! I'm a fan of Mahler, Khachaturian, Shostakovich, Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, and a little bit of Elgar, for starters. Still, very cool to hear your favorites though!

The music is the only way for me to feel the emotions safely. So I quite listen to music all the time, all day long.

It's hard for me to tell the difference between some stuff like "make me want to dance" or "happy", but I guess I can try...

-Empowered: Wat is dis?

Most SGaP stuff makes me feel empowered.

Late ABBA work (1981/1982) makes me feel sad. Same for Queen around the Innuendo album.

I don't feel like dancin'

Most Tom Petty songs make me happy. So does PinkiePieSwear and countless other brony musicians.
