gaming What do you think is the most iconic thing in gaming?

As I asked in the title, what do you think is the most iconic thing in gaming?

One that you believe ANYBODY could recognize?

You can name anything. Name a console, a game, an item in a game, a character in a game, etc.

Personally, I think the most iconic thing in gaming today would probably be Mario. I mean, who DOESN'T know him? My grandparents probably know who he is.

COUL OF DUTEY BATTLEWARFARE 56 MoST ICONEC GAM EVR!!11!!!!one!1

I'll admit that I know Mario and Master Chief, even though I've never played Halo in my life, but I'd have to say that the most iconic thing in my opinion is Pac-Man. Who doesn't know THAT? Who hasn't played it at least once?

Definitely Mario, but lets see if we can delve a bit deeper. What's something else that's pretty iconic...

- Well, there's the classic L - tetris block. Who hasn't played some kind of reincarnation of tetris, whether a flash game or one developed for a console?

- The Nintendo logo could also be very iconic, many having grown up with nintendo and they haven't really changed it.

- Link! Nearly forgot he's nearly as timeless as Mario!

- Pacman... maybe? I'm starting to grasp at straws. I'm just stopping here.

A good point, though...

If you saw my status...

There are a lot of people who recognize how Link looks, but a lot of people may think his name is Zelda.

Status: Wear Link costume from Legend of Zelda on Halloween. "HEY, LOOK AT THE ZELDA!!!"

Trust me, a Mario is easy to recognize and people actually know his name unlike Zelda

Err, I mean Link.

Yes like everyone else said it has to be Mario. Besides him Pacman would be my choice. I mean everyone has played Pacman at least once or twice. Maybe even a dirt block from Minecraft, most people know what Minecraft is and that block is the symbol of Minecraft. Maybe even a Creeper.

In my opinion the most iconic thing is 'Pong' it was one of the first video games to become really popular and was extremely fun. Plus it was on one of the earliest video game consoles the Atari 2600.

Square, that being the shape, since it defined the Atari era. Mario is obvious, given that he helped usher in the new age of gaming and established what gaming is today. That is a lot. Perhaps Hitler, from Wolfenstein. I actually have not played it but I know he is in there and that was one of the first major FPSs.

Also, Static. I know that defined a lot of childhoods. Sadly, that isn't too iconic because of the fancy new Xboxers and whatnot. Damn kids and your cell phones.

Three words: THE WATER LEVEL...

Every gamer remembers the water level. The annoyingly tweaked physics, the cruel puzzles, the even crueler enemies that you'll never see again for the duration of the game. The water level was one of the first rage-quit catalysts of the gaming world, testing not only our skills, but our patience as well. Whether we were watching our air supply or screaming at our television screens after falling off a platform it took us ages to reach, the dreaded water level has been the downfall of many a brave hero.

Mario,Kirby and Master Chief come to mind.

as for peripherals, R.O.B. The Robot, light gun and power glove for the NES. are what come to mind for me.....I own a ROB and a few light guns....would like to get a power glove, merely as a part of a cosplay or something.

Water, anything water related I hated in a game.

Blowing on game cartridges to make them work! only to have them not work 10mins later.

I have a list worthy of mentioning of the most iconic things in gaming history.

  • Atari 2600
  • Pac Man
  • Playstation One
  • Mario
  • Rare
  • Square Enix (SquareSoft)
  • Nintendo
  • Sony
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Capcom

That's my list for right now.

How did Pikachu not make this list? I know people, both young and old, that do not play or watch (or have limited exposure to) video games, anime, and most other things that would be attributed to "geek culture" and they all instantly recognize that furry electrified mutant rodent.

I think it is safe to say, Nintendo takes the cake on iconic video gameing figures between Pikachu, Link, and Mario.

Mario is basically the Mickey Mouse of gaming, it's almost impossible to see any gamer who doesn't know who he is

Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Sega and Atari, I'd say are all iconic brands in gaming due to their roles in console gaming. Likewise, the likes of Valve and Blizzard are also iconic due to their roles in PC gaming. All of them have one thing in common, in that they all have iconic game franchises for years to come(well, except Atari)

There are also many game franchises that have held iconic game statuses since the first ever consoles were made:

Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon

Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, God of War, Uncharted

Halo, Gears of War

Sonic the Hedgehog, Shemune

Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress

Starcraft, Diablo, Warcraft

And then there are those games that aren't tied to the major console makers(and Sega and Blizzard) that are absolutely loved by the mass majority of gamers

Tetris

Metal Gear

Castlevania

Silent Hill

Final Fantasy

Dragon Quest

Kingdom Hearts

Street Fighter

Megaman

Resident Evil

Pac-man

Tekken

Soul Calibur

Bioshock

Grand Theft Auto

Call of Duty

Battlefield

I think I'm gonna stop before I keep rambling

It depends how you mean. In a sense, the most iconic thing in gaming is numbers. Numbers are the keystone of any of it working at all.

If you mean specific-to-franchise things, Mario, of course, is the most successful franchise in history. As such, yes, Mario is probably a pretty sure bet.

If you mean most iconic object in gaming, probably a simple coin would be the most common to traditional platformer style games, bullets for a shooter, etc.

The term is extremely broad.

I think everyone has got this all wrong. Even non-gamers know this one probably, the Phrase "Game Over" that displays in some games is definitely the most iconic thing in gaming.

As for Character, I'd say Mario.

Most of you are stating Mario, while Mario is rather iconic, not just anybody would recognise him, the question is what would anybody recognise as a gaming icon and that means non-gamers too.

I would say PAC-man and a Space Invader are the most widely recognised Icons of Gaming, even by non-gamers.

Since Mario and sonic are already mentioned why not Mortal Kombat, definity one of the top 5 gaming franchises of all time and the movies were better then Mario Bros and Street Fighter

Not even to metion everyone knows the phrase "Finish Him" and possibly "Flawless Victory" and "Fatality"

Friendship, animality, brutality may ot be so well kown though
