I always wondered, if allot DOA motherboards are mostly just boards killed by static discharge when being installed? I have no doubt some come from the factory that way since they are very complex and I doubt they test all of em that go out the door, but I have no doubt some people kill them un-knowingly with static then claim DOA.

Not saying that is what you did, but it is always a possibility if not wearing a anti-static strap. Me I personally don't use them, I just try and touch metal as much as I can when going anywhere near a circuit board.

Daring: I think that the "next gen" term is meant to refer to "PC games getting released alongside an Xbox One / PS4 version". They're normally going to generally match the par course on consoles, with some eye candy added.
Ah, that makes sense. So multiplats, basically.

No I think some DOA boards genuinely are DOA. I've NEVER had troubles with any other board I've had. It's still a mystery what was wrong with this one, but what matters is it's fully functional now.

One of my boards was DOA because FedEx managed to break some of the pins on it, but i've never had a static discharge kill a board. I was lucky enough to borrow an anti-static mat from my school, and I ESD'd regularly.

Although I am guilty of it with Gigabyte boards.

They are just so amazing! Don't think I have built a computer for anyone without one yet.  /\_/\"

But I would buy a Asus board in a heartbeat if it is the only one in my price bracket with features I want.

Motherboards in general would be one to actually use brand loyalty to an extent. ASUS, MSi, and Gigabyte are all really good companies. ASRock is like, 95% there, and i'm actually gonna get one of their FM2/FM2+ Socket motherboards that is high end.

It was just a thought of mine. I have never ESD'd a board, and never seen one ever that was.

Was the box smashed up or something?

Only problem I have with ASRock is they are the budget brand of ASUS, which has always turned me off them because I always think they don't take the same care with designing them, and them lasting a while, but I haven't truly heard anything bad about them like I hear about Biostar boards. (Avoid those like the plague!)

No, all the motherboards are made in china...

Yup, not everything made in china is crap. Sure I would love if there were Japanese made motherboards though. lol

Yeah, there was a huge dent in the center of the box... I'm sure it wasn't on purpose though...

As for boards, I've heard decent things about ASRock, but I'm a die-hard ROG fan. My crosshair V formula is one of the best things I've bought in a while.

@@TorqueEffect,

ASRock has become a lot better now for being budget motherboards. Sure they might not last you as long (( Maybe a year or two less )), but they're definiately a lot better then before.

My friend said they were used to be known like Biostar and Foxconn, not to mention they were built from cheap plastic.

It always puzzles me how Foxconn can make such crap pc motherboards, when they build things like iPhones, Xbox 360s, Xbox One, PS3s, and PS4s, etc.

Speaking of Biostar, Those have been doing fine for me as well.

Then again... I'll go with ANY board that meets my criteria for a certain build.

heh

I had a friend that used a Biostar board, worked well for him for a while, it still ran in the end but the whole computer ran wonky, even after a complete wipe and re-install of windows.

Found the problem.

From what i'm gathering... You'll use a Gigabyte with every build of yours, and I mean every.

I guess I am a little bit Gigabyte obsessed.

Looking at this $40 ASRock board on newegg that I could potentially use for this A4 3400 I have lying here being unused. But I have no use for another computer at the moment.

Poor OP, we completely hijacked his/her/its thread.

@@TorqueEffect,

Buy a $50 buck MSi or ASUS, it's worth a lot more. ASRock is still getting there like I said, their cheap boards though aren't so good.

Also it's fine to be biased to Gigabyte, as long as you don't hit on other companies and such.

I actually Have that computer case, it is so awesome, and I love the blue glow at night when the lights are off. I have the fans set to medium speed and it is actually very quiet. You should definitely get it, I think it would work nice for you.

All the reviews for this $40 board are positive, which is why I was looking at it.

This is what Im getting, it's roughly $1000, I'm looking for some feedback, suggestions, whatever from the more computer savvy of you guys. Thanks!

Hmm.. Looks good, But personally I'd bump the i5 to an i7 and get 16gb of memory. 8GB is good, but if you plan on using this for awhile, your gonna wanna be up there.

Also a second vid card (I use an old GTX460) for PhysX processing alone. It doesn't have to be the same make/model as your main card, which is nice.

Overall, re-use as many old parts as you can and save money now to upgrade later.

And don't be afraid to shop around, and buy from multiple sites if you need too. SOMETIMES you can get some good deals across the sites, others.. not so much. But it never hurts to try.

Pricewatch.com takes some of the work out of it, but some of the sites listed can be questionable at times..

In other news.. anyone wanna buy a used GTX 560? Just upgraded and got the spare :)

Edit: just noticed your PSU.. may want to bump that up to a 750w or better just FYI if you can.

Running that much power on the "recommended" is NOT recommended.. you will burn out the PSU, or your other parts :(

Makes a nice blue torch for a few moments though.. heh :)

I made that mistake once about 4 years ago.. it took out my Mobo with it :(

A good motherboard is very important, so I'd suggest you get a Maximus VI Hero since ROG Motherboards are great.

The GTX 760 is good but if you plan on recording, two GTX 760's in SLI would be a huge improvement, or a single 780Ti if you plan to game on a 1440p Monitor.

A lot of builds use Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM so I'd suggest you look into that as well, preferably 4 slots of 4GB RAM.

You might also spend a little bit extra on getting a power supply, I'd suggest you get a Corsair TX750, but you don't have to.

One more thing, you might want to get a small SSD to act as a boot drive since booting from a HDD is a lot slower compared to a SSD.

That's a great build, but the cost is a bit more than 1 grand. A 780ti is massively overkill for any single monitor. A 1440 will be rendered fine on a 770. Plus, he's got a 1080 monitor, nothing bigger.

True, but if he plans on playing all the next-gen games at the highest frames possible, he might consider getting a bigger and better monitor, maybe even a second monitor for multi-tasking purposes.

To be honest 1440 is kinda pointless on a small screen. On my 24" I couldn't tell the difference between 720, and 1080, what makes you think 1440 will be any different?

SLI, and Crossfiring cards to me is pointless, just a waste of electricity, space, and adds heat. If you are going to pay $500, pay $500 for a single card, you will get better performance that way. I haven't found any need to use Physx, so a dedicated card for that is a waste. Planetside 2 seems like the only game that full on requires that kinda junk.

1440 I agree with a small screen, but from 720 to 1080 there is a MASSIVE difference. Especially in texture and cleanup (1080 needs less AA overall for one).

Texture wise 1080 is capable of viewing a much more crisp image, and higher resolution textures will pop out at you assuming the game has them.

@ 720 they suffer greatly and even with all else maxed theres often a lot of jagged edges and the textures appear far less clean overall if not outright blurry in some games.

Could have to do with the way the games handle the texture filters tbh, not sure, but there is very much a visible degredation.

truth be told, anything under 40" is pretty weak for 1080 as is, but there is definitely a clear difference between them on 24" +

Maybe its because I use a 120hz refresh monitor.. I dunno.. But I can def see it.

Update:

Fancier Case

Different Graphics Card (Friend said MSI can suck his dick)

100 extra watts

switched ram to corsair

Picture was too big to fit the screen for the snipping tool so it cut off the OS and the Optical drive
