Still no SSD? and is MSI really THAT bad?

It may be just me, but at the prices SSDs run right now I consider them a waste of money and rather just get a far bigger mechanical drive for even less money and put that money into important stuff like the GPU and CPU.

Why not get both? SSD for boot and HDD for storage?

and I don't see a mechanical keyboard either.

Update:

Fancier Case

Different Graphics Card (Friend said MSI can suck his dick)

100 extra watts

switched ram to corsair

Picture was too big to fit the screen for the snipping tool so it cut off the OS and the Optical drive

You've done well.

Also about the MSi thing. He must of had a different experience compared to the rest of everypony. The Twin Frozr GeForce cards are outstanding for performance and cooling, and even the regular cards are good good. I still recommend one over EVGA and such.

Oh and one other thing. Whatever you do, don't go for 16GB of RAM unless you really need it. If you find out you're using around 8 GB or so when running stuff, then up it to 12, and keep going until you find the right area. It's a waste of money if you leave out open space. Other then that, the gaming rig is set to fly away!

Money, because money. I rather put the $50-$60 even a small SSD costs into bumping up either the CPU or GPU(or both, if you don't mind splitting it and bumping up both a little less, instead of bumping up just one a larger amount)

That may seem stupid at high budgets, but when you're working on a budget where you're looking for under $1,000(or even around $600, in my case of what I want to aim for) that money could give something more important quite a upgrade.

Honestly, my view on RAM is shoving as much as you can afford without cutting back on the rest of the build in there to be safe, or at least get it built with the 8GB, and get more in there next time you have money to burn.

Well as long as they get an SSD later on then.

So.. no mechanical keyboard?

I'm not trying to be rude, because it's a serious question I want to explore.

Why are so many people hell-bent on "you gotta have an SSD", as of now I think they're just a massive waste relative to their size.

In my experience, ASUS makes good motherboards. They can be a little overpriced, but eh...being the central hub of everything, I think it's never a bad idea to get a quality mobo. When something like your CPU or your GPU fail, it's as easy as taking the old one out and plugging the new one in. When your mobo fails, though...you have to take the whole thing apart and undo the 9 or so screws holding it in there. Then once you have the new one in, you've got to get everything plugged back in...just sounds like a hassle to me lol Go with what fits you best, but I'm just telling you that ASUS also makes pretty solid motherboards.

A friend of mine uses a Gigabyte mobo with his Intel rig and it works really well too. I don't know exactly what model it is, though lol I do know it wasn't an expensive one because he's got a GPU that costs as much as the rest of his rig and I don't think he paid more than $700 for the whole thing

So I take it you haven't had an SSD yet? Good.

Once you get one... You won't want to go back.

and if you think it's a waste to have a fast booting machine... alright. good for you.

@@Shoboni,

8GB is really all you need when going for games. 16 is sometimes when you run a bunch of things, and 32 is just a waste unless you're running a RAM heavy server.

It saves money, and lets you live better :3

Also i've talked to z77 about SSD's already. I told him the same thing you told him, but.. He had a little hard time understanding my point. Just to let you know about that, heh..~

I've never had a problem booting a machine with a mechanical drive, I've had even POS machines I savaged from a school boot in under 30. I'm not the kind of person to waste more money just because I'm impatient to wait for the PC to turn on, especially if it's going to in-tale wasting a HDD bay on something with so little storage space for the money.

Next gen is rolling out and I don't know what those are going to need, so I'd do 16GB to be safe. 32GB might be a waste though, and 256GB is definitely a waste.

Good for you.

if you don't feel the same way about mechanical keyboards we might still get along fine....

I can live with anything due to life full of cheap game-pads and laptops(mechanical keyboards do feel nice, though. Nothing like the sound and feel of keys clicking)

I think the Kaveri cores will be a bit less on RAM hopefully. Still get 8GB, then roll up from there and see if you need to buy more.

On Newegg, it's cheaper to buy quad channel 16GB vs dual channel 16GB by 10 dollars. Pretty sweet :3

I used to ask this question all the time. For me, it's about boot times. I bought an ultrabook with an SSD and I recently started using an SSD as my boot drive in my custom rig. In my desktop, I went from booting Windows 8 in 50 to 60 seconds to about 8 to 12 seconds. It's a huge difference. That and running programs installed on an SSD is much faster. Programs like MS Office are ready to go immediately. On the old hard drive (WD Caviar Black 500 GB), there was a fair bit of waiting.

Biggest reason I recommend SSD in a laptop is because an SSD is virtually shock proof. I had a hard drive that failed on me when I tripped going up the stairs with my laptop in my backpack.  I was out about $400 on that. Not to mention, I had to drop a class because I lost my irreplaceable paper that I didn't have a recent backup of. The paper was worth 70% of the class, had to be 10 pages, and it was due about four days after this happened. Moral of the story: BACK YOUR CRAP UP! lol

As for my desktop, I just wanted the faster boot times. They are still super expensive, but the cost of an SSD is definitely coming down.

FYI I know for a fact you can get that vid card for less.. thats the card I just got, and it cost me about $100 less... unless the sales are already that far over

From what I've read SSD's are princesses, disable defrag, enable defrag for your data drive, dont save programs that save temporary files to your SDD, Disable hibernation, disable superfetch, don't write on it too much, don't delete too much, move shit with junction ports...

And to get any benefit out of it for your steam games you need a pretty large drive if you have even a moderately sized library, and what else, oh, faster boot times...yay...Seriously, 20-30 seconds is no big deal,I'd rather wait for the prices to decrease before I hopped on board.

Just my thoughts...

So.. no mechanical keyboard?

Nah

Maybe not the EVGA model specifically, but def the 760. Mine is the EVGA one with the overclock though :) guess I got lucky.

It was on sale when I got it, not sure if they still are.. Its always best to buy in parts IMO for this reason. Gnab up good deals while they're around, and avoid full price when you can. Recycle old parts for as long as you can/need to do this. But if its your first build, that could be hard..

$249 here

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130933

or $239 for the PNY one

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133492

$237 here

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/pny-geforce-gtx-760-2gb-gddr5-pci-express-3-0-graphics-card/1375028.p?id=1219050752787&skuId=1375028&ref=199&loc=kQ2kZjHcXDM&siteID=kQ2kZjHcXDM-pJe7u7u5rkbyWhOc_fMuwA

Bonus atm though is you get free games with them too, so in a sense you could discount one or the other :P

Batman Arkham Origins alone for the EVGA 760, but splinter cell black list and Assassins creed IV for others IIRC.

or if you get the 770 or better you get all 3 games!
