Games where you can chose gender or customize avatars allows us to do that, the idea it's simple, have a character which we can identify. However there are many who don't give a crap about identifying with said avatar and make something unlike the player, even changing the gender, for whatever reason.

For my part, I like to use the opposite gender if given the choice, why? ,apart of not caring about a character looking like me, I got three reasons:

1- I like girls

2- I like girls

3- I like girls who know a thing or two about kicking butt

I'll usually be a guy unless the character models look like crap (every Pokemon game ever created), then I'll choose a female character.

In games like Fallout, or the Elder Scrolls I don't really care about gender so I usually just pick a guy.

In games like Mass Effect though, I always make my Shepard a girl. In Pokémon I usually just pick the gender with the character model I like better.

I personally find it much more fun to customize a girl character than a guy one.

Not really a fan of creating characters instead of having set characters to use myself but when I do need to do it I have a specific male character I always try to create and just say it's the "chronicles of [said character]". Better than creating random people all the time who I don't care about because they are literally featureless and have no personalities except what YOU give them.

It depends on the kind of game, really.

In games like Pokemon or in MMOs, where gender hardly makes a significant difference, I'm normally female. I'm a male, yes, but I always just feel more comfortable playing as a female. I guess that's mainly because I tend to more easily attach to females than males to begin with.

On the other hand, there are games like Harvest Moon, where your gender affects you in terms of who you can marry and make your life with. In THAT case, I play as a male. I CAN be attracted to anime-esque males... but I'm normally not. So I tend to marry the cute-as-hell girls.

... Though, as a loophole, New Beginning allows me to dress up as a girl, both outfit and hairstyle, to the point that I pretty much AM one. Point for Natsume and Marvelous~!

I'm a girl, but my choices tend to lean towards whichever animation I liked better. For example, I really love the look of male Trolls in WoW, but didn't like the females, so I picked them. In TERA, I have a female Castanic because oh my god the hair I love it.

I do like playing guys, though, because the girls usually have revealing as hell armour and I feel stupid playing my Lancer High Elf because I have no clothes on and I'm a heavy armour class.

I usually play as a male just because I am one. When I play a game multiple times, I like to mix up a bit. One example is Fallout New Vegas. I have four playthroughs going on. One for each main faction you can join. I have three males for three of the factions and for the last one, I have a female character. :)

I tend to choose whichever gender has the better looking design in the game. Usually it's male but sometimes I'll go for the female.

Customization and preference is the key to choosing what fits better for you, gender or not.

In most games but not all, they play the same, with little to no difference, but in the end, I play both, with male being first to test out, and female for the second run.

Most of the time it could go either way. Usually I just pick whichever's design looks better. If it's a game with a lot of character customization though, I'll probably play as a female.

Y'know, I've been on this site for almost ten years and I've never had a proper signature. Ain't that something?

Yeah, I guess merely picking the character's sex is getting old. -_- We should be able to alter the gender of created characters as we see fit. Why should he/she act 'masculine' or 'feminine' by default merely due to biology? I want a male character to wear skirts for example. It would certainly add a new complexity to some games. :)

Most of the time I prefer to play as a female character if given the choice. Why? Because I always prefer to make my character visually appealing, otherwise I, for some strange reason, even though I rarely ever actually 'check out' my character (I lied, I do that quite often actually ...), will likely get bored fairly quickly. It does depend on the game I'm playing though, some I prefer to go male, and some female.

Also, 200th post! Yay!

I usually pick the same gender as myself when it comes to RPG's (male.) It reduces the chance of awkwardness in the case of an MMO and I feel that it better represents me in said game world.

However, there are a few notable exception conditions:

A: The male aesthetics are far more restrictive (ie: poor armor or sliders)

B: I create something adorable by accident
