Anypony else thought that Seabreeze was female?

I didn't know Sea Breeze was male until I heard Fluttershy repeatedly using male pronouns. I think the dead giveaway is when you find out that he was voiced by a male VA (which is unrecognizable to someone who went in blind due to the pitch-shifting). What was especially confusing in this case was FiM's tendency to cast a female character in this kind of role. I at first thought Little Strongheart was male. I've also heard tell Trixie was originally supposed to be male until Hasbro insisted on another female character.

I've come across this many times in animation, a character who has a feminine-sounding voice, a neutral or feminine appearance, but is referred to as a male. I think it's a postgenderist's wet dream when you can't tell the difference.

I did at first but then I thought... Yeah I guess so... I mean male butterflies aren't less colorful than the females... And I always imagine delicate insects to have delicate features like eyelashes... I like his design and I like him :) new favorite character me thinks!

Except in MLP:FiM male ponies never have eyelashes.  That is part of the confusion.

Oh, I'm perfectly aware of the "why".

But people seem to be just utterly floored by the notion that a guy character has big eyelashes.

Guess I'm just really used to Spongebob and bishie anime dudes.

Naw, Seabreeze is male, I scanned for gender traits and found the differences in the shape of the eyes.

As soon as he spoke I knew for sure, but slowing down the voice just in case, I was 100% certain he was male.

Good for you, genius. Too bad not everyone is aware as you are. :P

It's hard not to think he was a female at first, since all the breezies look feminine... so yeah I did, until Fluttershy started referring to Seabreeze with male pronouns. Akward lol...

I was initially confused as well after the first time Fluttershy referred to Seabreeze as a male. But I guess it was much easier for me to roll with it, unquestioningly because we have never seen Breezies as a species before, and although they "look" like ponies some aspects, they are not ponies and thus we should not compare if we were to do a proper analysis.

I can actually see someone pointing out that this episode may reference to the fact that there are more effeminate males in modern society than there was in the past and thus we should not judge a book by its cover.

I thought he was a female at first. The pink mane, the big eyelashes, ect. Fluttershy kept calling Sea Breeze "he" and "him", and I was like "Am I hearing her right?"

Anyways, I now know that Sea Breeze is definitely a dude. A very manly one at that. I mean, his voice actor is the same guy who did Vegeta. Sea Breeze's is over 9000 cooler than we thought he was.

  • 4 weeks later...

I also happen to find out that Seabreeze isn't the only character who is mistaken for female. Haku from Naruto is also mistaken for female, even though he admitted that he is male.

I did.

I gotta say, though, as weird as he, along with the rrest of the breezies looked, he ended up being one dedicated and brave little guy :D All my respect to Seabreeze, he's more of a man than 90% of the male population :D

I hate to be the one to say it, but you mean she's he's not? I knew he was voiced by a guy, but if girls have voiced boys before, then why not? I dunno, I always thought he was.

Same thing with Scootaloo and sometimes Rainbow Dash. You really can't tell until you hear their voices.

Wait seabreeze is a guy? I didn't know that

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it save equistria with its five candy coloured friends and shoot rainbows at bad guys using their necklaces and tiara unless you're celestia
