gaming Most tragic video game character?

Who in your opinion is the most tragic video game character? I think it's a 2 way tie between Terry Fawles and Xion. Here's why.

Terry Fawles - He was nothing more than a simple minded man with a heart of gold and a ton of loyalty towards his girlfriend. Even after she double crossed him and had him put on death row for murder, he continued to believe that she loved him, and that they would be together again. Also, the words from when he committed suicide while on the stand are so sad.

*Terry drinks poison*

Mia: Oh my god! Why did you do that?! We were so close to getting you found innocent!

Terry: No, no want that. Might kill again. Might kill sweet Dahlia again. Dolly told me if either one of us could no longer trust each other, to drink from vial.

Edgeworth: My god! Stop the trial!

Terry: Godot...thanks again...for the coffee. *dies*

And THAT, is why Dahlia Hawthorne is so hated.

Xion - She was an artificial being created in case the Organization was unable to control Sora. She was made using Sora's memories of Kairi (I think). She worked with the Organization along with her friends, Roxas and Axel, and eventually, Roxas had to fight Axel when he was trying to bring him back to the Organization, and Xion tricked Roxas into killing her, believing that he would be better off without her. And since she just Sora's memories, it's believed that she cannot be saved (although the end of KH: DDD gave some hope, and KH3 will give us confirmation whether she returns or not).

Definitely Godot, he ends up in a coma and during that coma he loses everything important to him and wakes up a troubled man

Um, I'm a little confused on the term.

Maybe Dom from Gears of War?

I mean,

this dude's wife was captured by locust camps, after he finally finds her, he has to kill her, then he kills himself to save his beloved friends the next game.

By the gods, man.

All those feels.

Porky/Pokey from Earthbound! He had abusive parents and no friends (other than Ness). Apparently, he fell under influence to Giygas's evil power and reveals that he had been helping Giygas all along (I think but not 100% sure). After Ness and his partners defeat Giygas, Porky bids farewell and travels to a different time period.

Sure enough, Porky returns in the next Earthbound game (Mother 3). Because of all the time traveling Porky has done, he doesn't age like a normal person anymore, making him immortal. He kills Lucas's mother and *spoiler alert* changes Lucas's twin brother into a cyborg that follows Porky's every order. After Lucas and his partners defeat Porky, Porky calls upon the Absolutely Safe Capsule and seals himself inside. What's tragic is that whenever someone seals themself inside the Absolutely Safe Capsule, there is no way out. Now Porky will spend all of eternity in isolation inside the Absolutely Safety Capsule. Even after the Earth's apocalypse, Porky will still remain inside the capsule.

Quite a tragic character if you ask me!

im going to go with Big Boss from the Metal Gear Solid series, he starts out as a heroic patriot, but winds up getting betrayed and lied to by his home country, both the CIA and the KGB are against him, and recently in Ground Zeros he loses everything, even part of his arm, and by the end of his story he becomes the villain

The Nameless One from Planescape: Torment.

I can't say more without spoiling some of the best story in video game history. Suffice to say that if you've played Planescape, you know what I mean. If you haven't, go play it. Best. Character. Ever.

I'd say Vile from Mega Man X (partly because i want to be creative and mention someone who's not from Metal Gear).

I just find it sad that no matter what he did, no matter how effective he was at taking down Mavericks (evil robots), he never got the recognision and praise from his fellow Maverick Hunters that he longed for. Sure, he was a bit destructive when fighting Mavericks (which makes me wonder why those in command of the Maverick Hunters never tought about making Vile a solo operative, meant for battlefields free of civillians), but at least he was effective. Effective enough to become an S-A Class Hunter (the best class). Yet X, a fellow Maverick Hunter of the lower B- Class, got all the attention and praise that Vile wanted. To make things worse, X was even told he could change the world with his powers.

Imagine being in Vile's position. You work really, really hard, and yet another guy who works half as hard as you gets all the rewards.

Also, his ending in Mega Man Maverick Hunter X gives me the feels every time...

So far, I'd say Zack Fair from FFVII: Crisis Core.

Sure, he started out optimistic about his job to work for Shinra, but as the game progresses, he starts losing the friends he cares about through either betrayal or death. I'm not going to give out spoilers for those who haven't played it yet, but that ending...

It was a key scene in the game and his actions highlighted some of the events to come in FFVII. He wanted to be a hero and be recognized for his efforts. In the end, I'd say he achieved it.

What makes that story all the more tragic is when you find out about Giygas's origin story in Mother 1 (called Giegue in the unrealeased/leaked English translation). He struggled with being loyal to his people and to the Maria and George who were Ninten's (the main character of Mother 1) great grandparents and the humans who first discovered Giygas and raised him as their if he was their own child. Since George and Maria discovered how to use psi which his people as well as him viewed as a threat and his mission was to stamp out all knowledge of psi among humans by any means necessary. In Mother 1 he was defeated by the same song Maria used to sing to him as a baby which convinced him to leave earth and call off the invasion. I think what destroyed him is that he killed his own conscience and let his mind fall to darkness and somehow Pokey was able to exploit that.

Clementine & Kenny from TWD.

I mean, Clementine now has to LIVE in this world and she's only 11 now. And Kenny lost his family and everyone.

But then in season two, they thankfully reunited. (sorry for spoilers. I don't know how to hide them. )

Oooooh...this one...I have an awesome one :D

What about Wander from Shadow of the Colossus? He goes into a forbidden land, knowing that Lord Emon would try to have him killed to attempt to bring his love, Mono back to life. She was sacrificed because she was thought to have a cursed destiny...but Wander didn't believe it. He literally has to kill 16 colossi in hopes of accomplishing this...seemingly impossible odds if you ask me. Then at the end when he does and summons Dormin back, encased in himself, still he cannot make it to his love no matter how hard he fights.

*SPOILERS* My god have you seen this?! The feels :(

Ukyo Tachibana is a pretty tragic character. He was stricken by tuberculosis, and is in love with a woman, and even though he could've had his pick of any other woman, he is solely interested in her, but he never ends up marrying her because of her noble status, and his illness, but he still fights to show his love for her. She eventually marries someone else, and he moves on and finds a woman with a similar illness. He journeys to Makai to find the perfect flower for her, and he finds a cure for both their illnesses, but he gives it to her and dies shortly after.

That is indeed tragic, but I also think Kubikiri Basara's story is rather tragic.. Driven mad by the death of his wife, wandering around to search for the demon who killed her.. Eventually finding out that he killed her himself.

The Nameless One from Planescape: Torment.

I think I will have to agree with Discordian, though.. Damn, the things that man experienced :S

Something (or someone) is TRULY discriminated against if we can't talk about it

without any fear of suffering prejudice yourself.

Yeah, he is pretty tragic. Although I think that he eventually managed to go to the afterlife with his wife, but not 100% sure.

Me neither xD I only read a summary of some characters stories on the internet, so I'm not familiar with the details, tbh :P

I found it. He fought against one of the bosses (the big guy dressed in red robes) and apparently, he defeated him, but he died as a result of the fight, because afterwards, he was holding his wife in his arms, and he turned transparent, and said something about being separated in life, but being together in death, and they both disappeared.

  • 4 weeks later...

Godot himself got it just as bad (At least his ending was somewhat happier than Terry's).

And don't forget about Terra, Aqua, and Ven. Even more so in DDD, when Xehanort became a cheap-@$$ Villain Sue and basically crapped all over their sacrifices (The main reason why I'll never buy that game, btw).

Also, there was Odio/Oersted from Live A Live (At least the best ending gave him a peaceful death with renewed idealism).
