Bob's Burgers: "Equestranauts"

Moved to Elsewhere

Eh.

Given I don't really watch the show, or anything like it, it won't affect me in the slightest :D

However, I think this is really going to be taking shots at our fandom. Nothing to worry about, though :D

People are going to check it out MLP for themselves, whether this is going to make us look bad or not. Either way, we win, because the media loves scrutinizing us already. Nothing's changed from that aspect.

Yeah it was decently funny starting out but then it just evolved into a show for Seth to spew out his political opinions.

That HE can't even seem to keep straight anymore. He's done both an pro and anti-marijuana episode on the show at this point, so SCREW ALL on trying to figure out what exactly he's trying to soapbox at this point.

Well, he's actually a brony, confessed and everything.

Bob's Burgers will no doubt be a flamestorm.

Maybe not, let's not jump to conclusions.

I am a fan of Bob's Burgers and I don't think the episode is going to do a number on us since they don't a have lots of viewers (or since im guessing?) but let's find out what happens!

They're called Equesticles

And they all dress up in weird fur suits.

That doesn't necessarily mean anything, and where are the fur suits? I only saw a picture of Bob in one, y'know the character that latched on to an arcade game to an absurd degree, because he lost the high score.

He was surrounded by other out of shape and hairy males in those suits. He also had a look of "oh my god what have I gotten into".

Hmmmm....that doesn't sound promising. Well I'll still give 'em the BOTD.

If anything this will play out like several other episodes... (the patty-cake one for example)

The kids (and maybe even Linda) run off to do something they see as fun/exciting/whatever, and Bob is stuck managing the restaurant blah blah blah... He eventually has to go fetch his family for one reason or another, and at first is still against whatever it is they are doing, but gets into it after awhile.

I've never seen the show personally, but if they are doing an episode about bronies, it is an indication that the fandom has reached the status of a fully-fledged cultural phenomenon, like fans of Star Trek used to be.

Unfortunately, also like fans of Star Trek (which I was and remain), I think it means we will be the subject of some less-than-flattering stereotyping from here on in.

I've seen some of Bob's Burgers, it seems okay but I never really got into it a whole lot.

Still, interesting they're doing an episode like that. Might watch it, might not, I dunno. Just hope it isn't too negative on us. :P

That's what I'm thinking, context is everything.

My reaction is the same as whenever any show tries to do an episode like this:

This is gonna hurt.

Time and time again it's been proven that an accurate depiction of a subculture does not make good TV, so it quickly becomes less of "Learn about these interesting group of people!" to more "Point and laugh as these freaks and weirdos!"  Best case scenario, the "equestrianauts" come off as social awkward individuals that fit rather cleanly into the geek/nerd stereotype. Worst case scenario however, they're obsessive manchildren who should be rounded up and put on a sexual offenders list. I'm not gonna get my hopes up regardless of the quality of the show.

In an homage to the “Bronies” subculture, Tina attends her first Equestra-con, a convention based on her favorite animated pony show, “The Equestranauts.” To her surprise, she finds that the show’s fans are middle-aged men (called “Equesticles.”) When a powerful super-fan tricks Tina out of her rare toy pony it’s up to Bob to go undercover and get it back.

This will be airing at 7PM Eastern TONIGHT on FOX.

This doesn't look like any "homage" to me, I have a bad feeling about it.

I already posted in another thread how I feel about FOX cartoons. To hell with all of them.

Post your reactions here.

My reactions to the episode ranged from the "meh" to the "that was pretty good". It was actually much better than I expected, but not the best it could've been. They did a much sharper job then I thought they would at referencing the good and bad parts of this fandom and fandoms in general.

NON-CANONICAL!

The unicorn guy must be an analog to Rarity fans.

It's a satirical piece, to be excepted NOT to be mock is like excepting Birds not to fly. You're excepting a lot. As long as you don't take it seriously, you might get a laugh or two out of it

The problem is not the idea of satirizing the show or the fanbase, I'm just not a fan of any of the cartoons on FOX and it's probably going to be fraught with terrible jokes and timing.

Look, I'm all for bashing on Fox Cartoon Shows. Simpsons has been stale since the mid 00' (and probably earlier than that if you want to consider other opinions.) Family Guy's 'random' humor has become dumb because of how obvious it's become. American dad is better than most so I have no complaints there. I do hear good things about Bob's burgers (plus it has the voice of Archer, which is AWESOME.) so it might actually be funny. Take everything with a grain of salt and move on, because the cartoons on Fox are not going to be same anymore. They'll try to make another Family Guy and fail. Best to wait until that show ends and they try to spark something else
