Should it be called a "Brohoof" or a "Hoof-Bump?"

So I have seen a couple threads recently about female bronies/pegasisters feeling dominated by all the bro-ification of all fandom words. A number of them seem to prefer "brony" as a title for ALL who enjoy the show, but some seem to resent the creation of the word "Pegasister." Personally, I like "Brony" and "Pegasis."

ANYWAY, my suggestion is this: Perhaps a simple change in the threads' use of the term, "Brohoof" could dissuade some of these feelings of alienation.

In the show itself, the ponies have always referred to it as a "Hoof-Bump." I prefer "hoof-bump" myself, but am curious to see what everypony thinks!

Pinkie Pie & Scootaloo "hoof-bump" during Pinkie's "Smile, Smile, Smile" song.

Rainbow Dash acknowledges Lightning Dust's gesture as a "hoof-bump."

Fluttershy & Rainbow Dash hoof-bump (RD says, "bump," not "hoof").

My only problem with this is that most female fans either wish to be referred to as "bronies" or don't care either way :D

Also, World of Equestria, another pony forum, uses the term hoof-boop, which, hoof-bump sounds a bit too similar in comparison, you know? :D

Like ghost has mentioned in their first line, I don't see enough of an actual need for this incredibly nit-picky change, to be honest xP The change from 'Like' to 'Brohoof' in the first place was meant for fun, just another example of a simple ponification of the site, just as the notifications button has a pony instead of a human silhhoutte. Really don't see the point in altering it.

"Hoof boop" just sounds ridiculous to me! haha I haven't had too much interaction with other bronies yet, but of course, even in the threads I vaguely mentioned above, there were plenty of females that said they prefer to be called "bronies" as well. I actually didn't ever hear the term "pegasister" until maybe 2 weeks ago in another thread! I just always assumed all fans were called "Bronies."

I find that I can be really nit-picky about things. I mean, I'm not pro-feminist or even anti-feminist, but I just think it could be a nice little change to make the forum more show-accurate. However, it was the female-based threads that brought these little things to my attention!

I LOVE being accurate. If someone misquotes a movie, show, or song etc, my brain goes all OCD about it! I am very detail-oriented, so it's nice to have others such as the two of you (so far) to bring in more balance and various perspectives!

Nothing wrong with some nit pickiness here and there :3 Makes sure no one gets lost in the bigger picture and forgets the details. But, you're the first person, male or female, to have ever mentioned this, so I think it's as ghost said; most people like 'brohoof', or they just don't care xD

Oh, I understand what you're saying! ^^

Personally, I think the term "Brohoof" is more fandom made than the show's "Hoof-Bump".

But that's just me, it just seems like "Brohoof" was made by the fandom, for the fandom.

I don't have a problem with either one, I like them both! Just paying my 2 cents. ^^ (\

Boo-yah for originality! Woot! Woot! Honestly, when was this forum created? "Brohoof" is definitely entrenched into its culture so I don't really expect too much response to go against it, but it's a thought anyway!

It was definitely made by the fandom! haha I'm just glad it's not "hoof boop" like what ghost said they use on World of Equestria (I had to check it out too because it just sounds so funny!) What HASN'T been made by this fandom? That's part of the reason I finally gave in and started watching the show! Every time I did a Google search for something, there seemed to be some version of it or parody or alteration that involved a ponified version!! Now I see the appeal! haha

I definitely prefer hoof-bump, not in the least because it's the term they use in the show. I love taking pieces out of the show like that. And as you mentioned over on the other thread, it's a nice neutral alternative to all the 'bro-ification'. (I love the fact that guys feel comfortable enjoying MLP, but it's a bit... disappointing that there still seems to be a need to gender label male participation.)

The way I see it, why wouldn't we want to use the term from the show? Especially if it's going to help a substantial part of the fandom feel a little less alienated. Win/win.

Edit

I do still think brohoof is pretty clever, since when it was coined I don't think we even had a canon name for hoof-high-fives yet? I just think that now we have a canon term, (hoof-bump), we may as well use it.

I just thought of 'high-hoof', but then just as quickly decided it sounds like something a fashion forward pony would wear on their hooves.

I am glad that you are being considerate of how others may feel about terminology that is used, but I honestly am skeptical that this is a big deal. That being said, I keep an open mind about this: if there are many female members here who feel alienated by that term, I would definitely support the idea of changing it to hoof-bump. If not, I think it would be best to leave it as brohoof.

I doubt that it is at all intended to be male-oriented. My guess is that it is simply a term that arose into usage, and I have never truly personally viewed it in terms of gender.

Hoof-bump is much better, because it's both neutral and accurate to the show.

I've kept fairly silent about it, but I really do not like the fact that "like" was changed to "brohoof". I've kept silent mostly because it is neat to have something more personal to the community, but when there's a neutral and show accurate one out there, why aren't we using it?

I don't care that it's used on another community. Does that mean that because another community has "MLP" in their title, we have to call this "Brony Forums" instead?

And just because some or even a lot of girls aren't bothered by it, doesn't mean that the ones who are should be shafted.

"Bro" is short for "Brother" which is a male sibling. That's not neutral. In a way, having to "brohoof" a post to like it, is, on some level, making me feel like I'm being made to accept/support the idea that masculinity is neutral, and that very much bothers me.

As I refer to myself as a brony despite my lady parts, I don't feel alienated at all.  I don't think other ladies should feel left out because of a name. Each to their own I suppose.

Hoof-bump is cute, because it's more show accurate. But I could careless if they change the name of the likes or not. They're still likes either way.

Not a good idea.

  1. Although it says "MLP Forums," this is a fan forum. We talk a lot about the show, but the MLP Forums encompasses much more than that. We have Sugarcube Corner, Cloudesdale Coliseum, the top section here, the role-play boards, convention relations, and the Poniverse forums. This forum is made with the intention of bronies to gather and discuss beyond Friendship Is Magic.
  2. "Hoof-bump" may be official, but it's not catchy. It doesn't have a smooth, organic flow in its vocality. "Brohoof"'s syllables transition far better.
  3. One ingredient that makes the MLP Forums stand out is how personalized it is. The "brohoof" has been the main handshake in the brony fandom for so long (and gives your knuckles some exercise *sweatdrop*), and "brohoof this" instead of "hoof-bump this," "like this (a default on many boards)" or "pos-rep/neg-rep (another default system)" gives the MLP Forums character and personality.
  4. Just like "brony," "brohoof" is gender-neutral, and changing it to "hoof-bump" enforces the blatantly SEXIST lie of "brony" and "brohoof" = "male FIM fans," when that's factually false.

I think the change to hoofbump would be very nice for us female fans, but as some others have said, I'm more concerned about the term "bronies" against "Pegasisters" then anything else personally. ^^; But although I like the sound of the word "brohoof" better, I think "hoof bump" is better because it is actually called that in the show. But considering we don't actually have hooves...

Haha, sorry to ramble on, but those are just some of my thoughts. ^_^

the "bro" of brony stems from 4chan rather than the word bro so this just seems to be the Tumblrites getting pissed over patriarchy or whatever again

Your idea isn't bad not in the slightest, but altering what the site has would be a bit redundant. The brohoof button is gender-neutral, it isn't really an important matter to have a change happen.

I've been on this site since day one, and I can assure you that it was not around in the beginning. It was just "like" for quite some time.

I can honestly say that I've never heard of a hoof-bump.

Brohoof is better, mainly because it's a ponyfied version of another popular term, brofist.

...oh, wait, there's such a thing as a fist-bump, too.

Meh... I stand by what I think;  brohoof > hoof-bump.

I rather like the term "hoof-Bump" it's the same phrase they use in the show. But even with "Brohoof" It's just nice to see ponification of little things that make this forum fun to be on. :squee:

Brohoof was a term coined by the fandom itself. Where as "hoof-Bump" was in the show...as I said above. :P

Idk, really I don't care much, I hardly look at the actual naming of the thing. And neither one would bother me.

However i'm kinda use to brohoof since its been like that since i've been around.

Of course hoof-bump works in some cases, I don't know if I feel it would work in the brohoof's place though, for some reason it feels like it would be awkward there. Of course again it wouldn't really bother me much either way, but just something to take into account.

Also, I don't find "bro" to really be that much of a gender based term, in the way its used in the fandom typically for sure I feel its pretty gender neutral. But I guess I wouldn't really know that well being that I am a male.

In the end, its such a small thing that it wouldn't bother me that much i doubt if it was changed. It would be odd at first, but then i'd get use to it.

To be perfectly honest, when I first joined Brohoof seemed like an awkward term to be, and now I feel is perfectly normal in my eyes.

So really I think that people will adapt to whatever one is used regardless in the end.
