Meghan McCarthy officially strikes down Sparity

I actually never liked the Sparity shipping all that much, as I found Spike's constant obsession over something that wasn't really going to happen very annoying. (If you think I'm talking about you, Ghost, honestly. Even your dreams and obsessions are more likely than Spike's.)

Rarighost is a much cuter shipping, anyways. :squee:

Personally, I'm gonna respectfully disagree with the two main reasons for striking down the Sparity pairing.

First off, the Age Gap? that can easily cease to be a problem by simply having Spike wait until he's of legal age, some of us have already brought that up, yet no one here has made any counter-argument against the idea, and DHX wouldn't even have to confirm or deny going that route, they could just hint that it might be possible and leave it at that, that way they don't have to address the pairing further and they don't upset any shippers of the pairing, win-win! Heck, the writers of Phineas and Ferb suggest that Ferb (age being around 10, maybe older) could be shipped with Vanessa (age 16) as long as Ferb waits until he's old enough.

Second off, Some of you claim the pairing can't or shouldn't work based on the fact that Spike and Rarity are two different species, but inter-species romance has been done before in fantasy and science fiction, even in children's entertainment. Far as most media is concerned, as long as two species are both sentient there's nothing inherently wrong with it.

Again, I know even if the writers chose to say nothing about Sparity or leave the possibility ambiguous (which I think logically would've been the smarter move), that likely we'll never see any real update on it in the show. But am I the only one that thinks skirting around it would've been better by virtue of being the option that's less likely to anger anyone?

I'd like to quickly disagree with this. Twilight has referred to him plenty of times as a baby, and it makes more sense for his age to be closer to 10, if not 7. In the episode where he grew due to greed, there was an early adolescence stage that was vastly more befitting for a 15-16 year old representation. My mind may be a little foggy, but I'm very certain his voice started cracking and dropping too.

On to the main topic, there doesn't seem to be any actual proof that Meghan McCarthy said what is in the OP. That's just some fanart, with text and McCarthy's name after it. I would take this claim with a grain of salt until some solid proof is presented.

Agree with the most of this.  I was wondering if that was just a picture that was edited, source seemed unverified.  I don't mind ships (ha, I have my own personal favourites), but the problem I had with Sparity was that I viewed it nothing more than a crush. The problem with crushes (puppy love), as others have said, it goes nowhere. It's an aspect of adolescence and a part of growing up. Something that is usually harmless, one sided adoration or worship that happens. The thing I really liked though from Simple Ways was Spike's reaction at around 8:40 “Oh Spike, how could you ever know what its like to be totally obsessed with a pony only to find out that they are obsessed with somepony else?” - camera pans to Spike, dat scowl and eye shrug even looking at the camera, body language saying sarcastically, “Yes Rarity, I totally don't know that feeling” and a simply reply of “I don't know”. - That was great of Spike, that was a sign of growing up. I was sure by that episode Spike had gotten over his crush of Rarity long ago and realized it was never going to go anywhere. It's alright to have crushes, they come and go, I figured Spike had realized this and moved on.

Also, there hasn't been any verification about how old the mane cast are. I don't see how we are attaching age numbers to some of the mane cast when I haven't really been convinced of good proof/evidence that demonstrates exactly how old they are. So I don't see that as a good comparison. Dragon years can't really be verified either in this series (Some episode, can't remember gave some suggestion that Dragons live for a very long time, just can't remember when it was brought up in the series). Spike will probably outlive Rarity (I think), but the way Rarity was treating Spike, it was obvious that she treated him more as an adorable child in a form parental endearment (think of that lovable “aunt to nephew” relationship).

Oh and about the Sparity ship itself – no that will never die out. Ships don't die out. I don't ever see ships dying out because people will still continue to ship them – that's what makes shipping, well shipping.

Spike, however, would be about 7 or 8 in human years :D

Ew, no. There's an episode where he outright hit puberty, which could place him around 12-13 around two years ago, which could make him 14-15 now. He's probably only referred to as a baby dragon because, if dragons live to be a thousand or something, that means he's around 1 in dragon years.

He hit puberty and went back to being a pre-pubescent, did he not? I mean, I'm no expert on Spike, but I believe you're referring to "Secret of My Excess," to which he went right back to being normal after the fact, so any physical growth he had in that episode seems sort of nullified.

Technically speaking, a dragon can't be pubescent...

I think in the back of our minds, we all know this.

But at the same time, I don't know if it was a good idea for her to come out and 'officially' say this.  Although to be fair, Soraya Saga 'officially' said the same thing about Shion and Allen and we know what came of those two (which ended up being one of the best written scenes in RPG history), so it's probably still safe to take this with a grain of salt.  But I think it would be better if the writers just let fans use their imaginations for these things, instead of coming out with 'official' statements.

But as I always say, unless you see it in the show, it isn't canon.  So there's no need for fans of the pairing to worry yet.

Doesn't change the age. If we're talking purely about someone being enough man for Rarity, then maybe we have a problem, but whatever.

I never ship them when Spike is still a kid/young teenager/whatever he is now, anyhow. I agree that as of right now it's just an affectionate friendship mixed with a one-sided crush. But if we assume that Spike is around 10 years younger than Rarity, then the age gap isn't too great that this could be a thing when he's old enough and gosh darn it unicorn and dragon couples are flipping sweet.

But if the writers came out with a convincing Adventure Time-style lesson about heartbreak, I could potentially be okay with that. As long as the close friendship is kept in tact and the subject was handled well, I'd be happy. Still hope the series is ambiguous enough that I can make this after-series head canon work, but I'm flexible-ish.

I really don't care. I didn't even see them developing it into a relationship in the show anyway due to the different species and how weird it is. Besides people would probably get angry knowing what happens when shipping gets into the show. I'm fine with it being a cute little crush and to save the romantic stuff for fanfics.

Well, I've always thought it would come to this.......yet, I have to agree with @@Sugar Cube, a baby dragon, obsessed with an adult pony............that sounds a little wrong to many people.  However, their friendship should remain somewhat the same, but to an extent.

Finn is missing a couple of marbles in the head. He's a crazy creepy teen.

Spike's crush on Rarity is just temporary and a result of living around ponies most of his life. The crush is built upon him being very much a pony pleaser. Crystal Kingdom showed that one of Spike's biggest fears is not being needed.

He hasn't been around girl dragons his age range.

Sink the ship if you will, McCarthy, but as with all ships, there's gonna be a multitude of people who're ready and willing to go down with it. Just look at how many people still ship Zutara/Tokka/Taang/etc., even after Avatar's writers brought down the gavel and made Kataang canon.

That said, I guess I'm now free to root for SpikeyBelle. (Shove off, Button. You ain't even a canonically developed character. :okiedokielokie: )

Finn's not so much missing a few marbles but rather lives in a world which is thoroughly bonkers. Jake is really the only personal reference he has in terms of relationship experience, and that has often proven to be a very mixed bag.

But to the point about Spike -- The writers gave him an episode that by and large "resolved" the issue of his crush on Rarity ("Secret of My Excess"). The whole episode was about overwhelming desire and misplaced infatuation. In the aftermath of that episode, Spike's crush has been knocked down to a few token lines and glances. While I can't totally blame the writers for putting the kibosh on that dimension of Spike's character, it also coincides with the unfortunate turn of Spike into the resident butt monkey. His characterization has rarely been consistent since Season 2.

She pretty much just said anyone already knows anyway so I don't see how it is news, but it won't stop people from writing shipfics and drawing shipart. It hasn't in previous fandoms and it won't in this one either.

That has always made more sense to me anyway, Spike has a lot more in common with Sweetie Belle than Rarity, I could even picture Spike and Applebloom really.

Well, Sparity never sounded right to me anyways. It just never...errr...clicked right with me. If I wanted to ship Rarity with anyone, I would ship her with a nice, handsome town stallion. ^^

A poor tactical decision.

I never expected anything to come of it in the show truthfully, but to outright say it will never happen was needless at best.

At worst they've basically gutted his motivation as I suspect it will still be a big part of his character (like in the upcoming episode); now that we know it will go nowhere it's hard to care.

It would be like if McCarthy said Dash will never become a Wonderbolt but there are still episodes about her trying to be one.

*UPDATE*

Phew, confirmed hoax.

So, there may be hope.

As I said, I never expect full-on romance, that'd be silly in a show like FIM (BUT GREAT).

Just little hints of mutual affection, just like they've been doing ever since Secret Of My Excess.

Let's start rebuilding that ship, friends.

We set sail in a fortnite.

Sigh....gotta link it again....

at 1:03:30 the writers say he's a child and shes an adult, and cuz of that it'd be "inappropriate".

Could you update your thread's original post with this so I don't have to keep linking it and cuz the derpibooru quote was a hoax?

So it was a hoax huh? Probably by some troll. He probably didn't even go to Babscon. Also wouldn't that be weird news to get since next episode is pretty much a sparity episode?

Noooooooooooooooo! :(

Use spoilers please, I don't like to know what the next episode is about...

If the next episode is a Sparity one, we'll certainly learn more about the future of their relation. :)
