Appears it's a joke that stuck and has just been repeated. It's like being called a name you hate in high school and the fact that it bother you makes them keep using it. Hopefully it will get old and stop being used but douobtful.

Didn't the stereotype of neckbeard fedoras spread from 4chan or a similar board?

It's basically a term used for the worst of the worst of the fandom, the creme de la crap if you will. Sort of like I use the term 'mouth-breather' to refer to annoying idiots (Thank you Hey Arnold). But people want to assume that the worst of the fandom represents everyone in the fandom, even though we hate those few annoying people just like everyone else. Sort of like people assume Trekkies are weird nerds that live in their moms basements. It's not generally true, but there are a few awful people where the sterotype fits- and then when you see those dash-holes interact with the public, you just cringe and weep a little on the inside knowing they're being a representative of your interests.

I honestly never heard of this comment until someone on Tumblr brought it up. I didn't think it was an insult until SJW used "neckbeard" as a derogatory term.

Time to avoid Tumblr for awhile, at least for me.

It is just a variation of the old "nerd" stereotype of a bunch of overweight pasty faced anti social grown men who watch TV, read comics and play video games all day. Basically when they are using this insult they basically comparing bronies to Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons. It is true that bronies tend to pretty nerdy (not that there is anything wrong with that) but in this case they are trying to paint a picture of overgrown obsessive man children that a part of the fandom does indeed fit into but is thankfully the minority, albeit a loud and rather annoying minority but still a minority.

It is a colloquial term used to describe the stereotypical "man child nerd". It began to take hold when the insult had a basis in the physical appearance of those they were using it against (ie most of the people they used the term to insult really were fedora wearing men with neckbeards) and it took hold as any insult that hits close to truth tends to be effective emotionally. But at this point it has just become another overused insult on the internet.

I've elected to stop wearing a hat I have, even though I've spent several hundred dollars equipping it with fine pins from around the world, for a few reasons.

1. When it rains, it absorbs water very well and becomes even heavier than it already is from all the weight of the pins. This gives me a headache.

2. Due in no part to my own actions, possessing a beard and fine-rimmed hat has become a stereotype against people who enjoy using the internet for amusement.

White baseball cap is fine until I get a different hat.
