FIM to be removed from Netflix August 16
BornAgainBrony replied to heavens-champion's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Aye. Using discs would drive me MAD. Just a couple weeks ago I was chatting with my friend about a fanfic we were doing and were trying to figure something out that was scattered across like ten episodes across multiple seasons. I had the answers I needed in less than ten minutes, just hopping around from one episode to another and finding what I needed. Hard disk storage is king at the moment, for me anyway. -

That stuff is very tricky when it comes to Copyright. By the spirit of the law, parody falls under fair use, but the law is only on your side when you can afford to spend as much as your accuser, unfortunately. Some companies are a lot friendlier about fair use than others and you can start to get an idea of who is going to let you play in their sandbox without throwing a hissy fit over every little thing. Some businesses know that it can be advantageous to let fans create their own content, because it helps to grow the fandom and keep it going. Well, it "could've" done that. Physical media is still definitely on the way out though. But the dream of getting all of our media in one place is gone now that every business is trying to make their own "Netflix" and putting exclusive shows on it (looking at you NBC All Access and your ST:Discovery nonsense). In the end it's all going to end up costing MORE than cable, when you need to have a monthly subscription to ten different networks to get the shows you want. Piracy is going to make a comeback in a HUGE way as a result of all this. I can't understand why visual media hasn't comfortably settled into the new "way" of doing things. You don't see this happening with music. The music industry took the Napster concept and ran full speed with it, and the way music is purchased is completely different now. You don't need to be a paying member of every music stream service to get access to the albums you want. Why is film and television resisting what is obviously a better system? -
I'm still trying to figure this one out too, but if I sit and think about it for a while, it's kind of scary in an odd way (and no, I don't mean I'm worried about this being a gateway drug to bestiality or anything). Thing is, I've had school crushes on cartoon characters on and off my entire life. Some of them human, some anthropomorphized animals. But there's something radically different about ponies that feels all too eerily genuine. I'm not even talking about waifus here, but the emotions are still remarkably deep. I care about them just as intensely as I would a lover, even where there's no romantic feelings, and that's some amazing borderline Twilight Zone stuff to me. More on topic, physical attraction for me is intricately intertwined with the emotional, so personality plays a huge role in dictating what is "hot" to me. Dashie is my waifu. But in terms of compatibility I think Fluttershy comes a close second, which seems really odd to me because they're such polar opposites.

Another problem might be the family. Not that it's a bad thing, but if the friends ever split up, I feel like AJ would have the least difficult time dealing with it, because she has those classic strong Southern ties to her enormous family. That may or may not have something to do with how balanced she is, in addition to the fact that she's dealt with a lot more tragedy (I'd say her parents were quite the life-changing event). I could do with an entire flashback episode about her having to take over the farm... unless that's been done and I just haven't seen it yet (I'm only half-way through E7.) -

Wasnt youtube piracy rampant before it was on netflix? Also, i really want digital downloads. Ive seen optical discs become unusable just from sitting in the player or the box sleeve. I don't trust them at all anymore. It also is a much bigger pain swapping discs when you're trying to research anything. -

I don't think it's being an Earth pony. Her personality is the most (in the traditional sense) mature out of all 6. Her quirks don't involve random explosions of emotion like the other five, so she isn't going to get as noticed in the crowd. In a comedy, AJ definitely falls under the category of "the straight guy." The writers seemed aware of this from pretty early on though too, so I doubt anyone had a problem with it... "AJ cries on the inside" -
Currency seems like it is probably a non-state issue. Some ponies use it in certain venues. Other times everything seems completely voluntary, like Fluttershy's wildlife habitat that would've cost a fortune to build (and then rebuild). There's also no mention of taxes, which means there's no reason to push a currency on the populous. I sometimes wonder if Equestria is actually on its way towards becoming pure communism or something similar, and the use of money is just sort of hanging around out of habit or tradition. With ponies so willing to help each other out, wealth doesn't seem so necessary a motivator like it is with humans. And some of the most important work that is done, doesn't seem to be funded. For example, are the Pegusi being paid for weather services?

Wow... no freaking way... how did you manage to do this? Is there a benefactor with a fat bitcoin wallet or something here? Also I can't help but wonder... if it's "just" detached enough from MLP CANON that it doesn't tread onto any copyright ground, is there any way this could actually be a for-profit show? With the amount of effort that you've put into getting some pretty big names involved, it just seems like you 'could' be doing just that. And with rumors of the FiM show closing, and not knowing if G5 will keep the fandom going or hurt it, I can't help but wonder if maybe, just maybe what you're doing here might actually be able to keep the G4 magic alive. What kind of ambience of the universe you're building? Are you trying to stick with the same feel of FiM, going for something a bit darker/mature like the Equestria of fanfiction, or something entirely different? (kinda useful as far as coming up with voices for the characters, if you want it to be cartoony/bouncy or something that feels more serious and natural) Or I guess more simply, who is your target audience? Final question. What is the animation going to be like? Are you still doing the "Flash" style of FiM or is this being hand-drawn the oldschool way? And hay, being an older dude, I don't know if I can assist much with a voice (I guess another thing I'm wondering is if you'll be having a more balanced ratio of stallions/mares for main protagonists), but I'd love to give it a shot. Yes I know this was posted in June and maybe you're long-since done with it already, but I feel like this could reeeealy be something amazing to be a part of. My hat is off to all of you for trying something this bold. You seem like you're just disregarding the moonshot and instead you're trying to aim straight for Pluto!

Why don't the CHS students go through the portal?
BornAgainBrony replied to Literatel's topic in Equestria Girls
I have trouble believing that one. Teens are the ultimate age of thinking you're invincible. They're thrill seekers, and don't think about mortality that much. We're talking, "Hey, jumping off a second story rooftop into a 3-foot pool sounds like an awesome idea! Watch this, guys!" Also, things like drag-racing on public streets. I would expect teens to be the people who would be MOST likely to jump through and see what's on the other side. And the younger you are, the more easy it would be to mentally handle the new surroundings, because the brain is still pretty flexible until your upper 20's. The older you get, the harder it is to process highly conflicting information, and nothing could mess with you more than "unplugging from the Matrix." Though I wonder how much the state of the would would impact such a decision. Maybe for some of us on... we'll just call it "Regular Earth," the risk/reward ratio might be a bit more skewed towards reward because let's face it... things are pretty crappy in this world. There isn't much to go on with what EQG is like outside of the lives of teenagers. The highschools seem much friendlier than in our world, but does that reflect what the entire planet is like? Or are they also plagued with constant wars, famines, unemployment, racial tensions, etc? -
How does a Pony actually get a "Flowing" mane?
BornAgainBrony replied to Unity's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Could it be indicative of their connection to celestial objects? In space there's no gravity (alright, I know actually there is and the reason weightlessness is experienced, but... yeah) and the way their manes move sort of makes me think of what I'd expect from someone with long hair on the space station. I've always wondered why Twilight and Cadence don't have this. But when Flurryheart was born, Celestia and Luna said it was the first time there had ever been a natural-born Alicorn. So both of them must have ascended too. -

What Is Your Opinion on Occultism?
BornAgainBrony replied to Altastrofae's topic in General Discussion
If you like researching religions, you'll probably enjoy Wicca. The word "occult" has a lot of bad stigma attached to it that lingers over from the "Satanism scare" from back in the 70's (remember, parents were terrified of Dungeons and Dragons back then, and don't get me started on heavy metal music). Sure there are "dark witches" but usually it's about trying to change the world for the better. It's also very flexible though in that you can find Witches who have no problem incorporating other religions into their practice if they so choose, and that's one of the really cool things about it: you get to pick your own gods, spirits, etc. And speaking of picking your own gods, I have to ask this of the occultists in the room. I'm wondering if anyone here who works with the moon goddess (arguably the most popular deity in occultism)... at some point suddenly found their mental image of her... looking a bit different than before... like say... a certain Equestrian Princess? -
Uhh... but the rainbooms DO have magic. Doesn't that make this question kinda moot? On the second one, dont know if i would feel less important. Most of the characters ive been into over the years have been kinda powerful either by magic or some other thing. It wouldnt bother me. Id be happy just to be able to be supportive. That contribution would be enough. Besides one does not complain about dating rainbow dash. Actually, this question applies to the pony versions too. While there's a lot more magic in the universe, the mane 6 have a power that no other ponies possess, so that still raises them up to be 'special' in a somewhat different way.

What Is Your Opinion on Occultism?
BornAgainBrony replied to Altastrofae's topic in General Discussion
I could've gone with "completely support it" but then... I'm not really OK with Sith Lords, and that particular option implied supporting the use of magick for good OR for evil, and that kinda violates the "An Ye Harm None" creed. It's hard to say I'm an active practitioner. But a lot of Star Wars EU influenced my early involvement in it, and one of the things that really stuck out in my mind was the dark side being the result of Force users who became far to reliant upon their powers. The Pony version of this would probably be Starlight (no, surprisingly not Trixie) and her kneejerk reaction to abracadabra her way out of any problem that arises. And of the few times where I did something "just to see what would happen," the results were VERY scary. I've also seen "Forbidden Planet." So... heh. I have a very conservative approach to the use of spells. I only do it when all other options have failed and unless my heart is absolutely crying out for it to be done, I stay away from it. I'll still do things to honor the gods/spirits/etc, but I can count the number of times I've seriously tried to use my will to alter reality on a single hand. As far as atheism or agnosticism is concerned, since I saw at least a few 'followers' of such in this thread... I'm perfectly cool with people who don't believe in this stuff. I don't care if they do or don't, and I see no need to try and make them believe. I've personally experienced far too much Twilight Zone stuff (and I don't quickly assume... I DO investigate and try to debunk... including a UFO encounter I had that I didn't find a practical answer to until a decade after it happened) to think there isn't ANYTHING out there in the "great beyond" or another dimension, etc. I'm also quick to have words with anyone who tries to use beliefs as an excuse to impede scientific progress. I've never seen any practical reason for both sides to not be able to get along (unless their faith is really that shaky). I still won't say I KNOW that things are as I think they are, and that all of this could be a perfect storm of coincidence and illusions. I guess just too much has happened to completely disregard it. -
Kind of wondering why this experiment hasn't been done. I've seen "scientifically accurate" takes on Anime characters and Disney Princesses. But when you say "actual horses" you're talking about turning them into what we have on Earth. I don't think even a scientifically accurate Equestrian pony would be so crazy far off from what we actually see. I'll reserve my opinions on whether or not it'd be attractive. I'm definitely not into Mister Ed. If there's been a xeno-paleontology project out there focusing on ponies, I'd love to see it. One such interesting question... would the size of their heads push their center of gravity so far forward that they wouldn't be able to stand up? On questions of birth, I wonder if the whole thing with foals coming out still wrapped inside the embryonic sac is a thing in Equestria. With Earth horses it's like that. Sort of a soft, flimsy egg shell that the foal is still inside of. So after 'birth' it still has to break out of that. TBH it's creepy like something out of the Alien films, but overall is actually far less messy than human birthing.
