What's your Japanese name?

Scarlet Letter

Ahah ! Mine is just "Nikora"

They just transform the l in a k and get rid of the s at the end ! Ahahah ! What's the point of having silent letter anyway

仁虎羅
~ Nikora ~
meaning:
"仁" is benevolence. "虎" is tiger. "羅" is network.

Wow...so I'm like a network of benevolent tiger. Nice !

I don't like the sound of my name in Japanese so I've tried to come up with a name that means the same thing as my name and the best thing I've come up with is 橋村 (Hashimura).

My real name in Japanese sounds really, really stupid. German (or apparently Scottish and rather common when it comes to my first) names don't translate very well, especially long ones with sounds that can't really be emulated in Japanese. For a Japanese name that means the closest to my real name, I would be Hansamu (yeah really on point with that one, aren't we? :ButtercupLaugh:). Though if I chose a name, I'd be Akira (あきら). I like the way the name flows and it fits me better. It's unisex and it means something that sort of works for me. I'm honestly not sure what my Mom or Dad were thinking when they picked my first name. Doesn't suit me.

The Katakana variant of my current real name is spelt ケイシー which in its romanised state, spelt Keishii which is Casey. Typically, western names are written in Katakana and uses sounds that are similar to how they are pronounced in English. Katakana is typically used for any words that are from outside of Japan. You will never see typical western names written in Kanji.

For example. If you take the name Karen. It would use the following Katakana characters. カ (Ka) レ (Re)  ン (N). It would still mean Karen and still sound very very similar to the pronounciation of Karen. But it would be spelt with those characters.

At some point I will be changing my name to Anita. So that would look like アニタ in Katakana and would still be pronounced as Anita. Additionally, I intend to move to Japan to live permenantly someday. When that day comes I will most likely keep the name Anita but adopt an entirely different family name from scratch and use a proper Japanese family name. In regard to any Kanji written names, there is actually an official list of Kanji you can use for names.

Kind of nerded out with this response admittedly. :P

This chart is the Katakana. You could probably guess your name from the chart alone without using a translator.

Spoiler

On a related note in regards to the Chinese language. I always cringe when someone says they have a tattoo of their name written in Chinese. Unless it's an actual Chinese name, then they either have jibberish tattooed on themselves or in some cases, something completely ridiculous written on them. So if you have a friend named Mark who claims to have his name tattooed on himself in Chinese. Then there is a very big chance that they have made a very big whoopsie daisy.

  • 1 month later...

My Japanese name is pretty much the exact same as my name in English. I sort of expected that to be the case.

At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do.

Just now, Dreambiscuit said:

Mine is Keiti, which sounds astoundingly close to Katie. What a coincidence!

It’s a dream.
