Most Beautiful Sight You Have Seen

I think it has to be the night sky with no light pollution. Other worldly experience for me, and also an experience you can’t really accurately photograph, you gotta see it for yourself.

I’ve tried twice to revisit that experience, but I played it too safe and both times it just wasn’t as lit up in the sky as I was hoping for. It’s just too much of a drive and then if I were to fly a small plane somewhere dark, I have to get far away from the airport lights. Also pricy.

Last time I saw space like that was 2007. I was in West Texas….

This memory goes back a ways, so bear with me...

I was working security and my assignment was to patrol an empty textile mill in a small town.  It was Christmas Eve, and not long after midnight I was doing my rounds and decided to do a roofline check (we had access to the roof but checking it was optional).  I opened the door and stepped out, and from there the entire town was laid out below, Christmas lights twinkling on some of the houses, light snow on the ground, the peaceful stillness of the cold night ... I have never experienced anything quite like that since.

I was out night hunting with an ex-friend a few years back. It was a fullmoon on Christmas Eve and it was about 2AM or so. We'd reached the edge of the forest and looking down into the valleys below there was a low fog rolling in that was gleaming in the moonlight, we just sat and and rested and watched it for a little while, it was a mystical moment combined with the quiet stillness of the night compared to the thrill of the hunt.

We may not be friends anymore but that was a very cool experience.
