I agree. It's almost like the great gatsby, it's sort of unclear who is the protagonist in this story. Twilight or Sunset? 

 

Twilight could be considered a "false protagonist" - like Marion Crane in Psycho.

Though I think Sunset because it starts with her, and shows her as she is and how she changed and how she's dealing with her past that no one's letting her live down, and even in the beginning of the movie when twilight finally arrives, twilight is reluctant to take Sunset's hand but at the end she is eager to take her hand, and then her color is added to the rainbow. She also helps solve the problem for the main characters.

I personally see Sunset as the protagonist and Twilight as the deuteragonist. I think this is one of the reasons I enjoyed Rainbow Rocks so much as Sunset was central to pretty much everything (or at least that's how I interpreted it   )
