MLP Forums MLB Baseball Thread

Okay a Fantasy Baseball thread would also be fun. You know what we also need maybe like a trade deadline MLB thread. When the date comes closer that way we could talk about deals we want our teams to make or deals that teams have made so we know who traded for who without cluttering up this thread for regular baseball play.

If there was a record for most runs allowed in an extra inning, I think the Tigers just broke it.

Tied 4-4 going into the 10th, then they give up 8 runs.

Okay, seriously... what is with R.A. Dickey? Like...... wow!

Dickey has been extremely impressive this year. In the last five starts, he hasn't given up a single run. Plus, in fantasy scoring to all you fantasy ball fanatics, he's scoring mad points. Any other way, it's still very impressive the way he's pitching at this moment. Edited by Deemo

R.A. Dickey needs to start the All-Star game. I don't know how that cannot be a serious consideration outside of potential schedule conflicts (i.e., he starts within two days of the All-Star game). He has a 0.89 WHIP! Opposing batters are hitting .194 against him! That's Pedro Martinez circa 1999-2000 territory! He hasn't been accumulating wins by sheer luck or offensive support; Dickey is just outright dominant. Aside from the rainy game in Atlanta back in April, there is nary a blemish on his 2012 record.

He's most certainly an All-Star this year, but if he keeps this up the Cy Young Award would be well within his grasp.

Dang. I haven't been paying too much attention to this season. I didn't realize how well R.A. Dickey has pitched.

R.A. Dickey has been absolutely lights out. In his last two starts, he's allowed one hit apiece. No National League pitcher has accomplished anything similar to this since Jim Tobin of the Boston Braves in 1944: He allowed one hit in one game and followed it up with a no-hitter!

Without question, Dickey should start the All-Star Game. His ERA is at 2.00, he's an excellent 11-1, and he's walked only twenty-one batters. Knuckleball pitchers are notorious for their lack of command of the strike zone as the pitch is very unpredictable, but he's been able to throw it for strikes. Also, he tends to throw a HARD knuckler. Often, they're "lobbed" to the catcher at 60 to 70 miles per hour, such as Charlie Hough, Tom Candiotti, and Tim Wakefield. Some of his knucklers tend to be thrown harder than his fastball; that plus his ability to change his speed fools the hitters into swinging and missing, hence his high strikeout rate lately.

Dickey's currently the lone knuckleballer left in the majors with Charlie Haeger in the minors and Tim Wakefield retiring. He's a tremendous ambassador to the league and the knuckleball pitchers because he's "the last knuckleballer left" and, therefore, can be a huge inspiration to future players who wish to throw as great a knuckleball as his. Whenever he starts, he gives the Mets a chance to win because he can pitch deep into games and keep the hitters on their toes. If he keeps this up, he'll be seriously looked at to winning the NL Cy Young Award.

I think the NL is going to have a really hard time picking Cy Young, what with Dickey, Cain, Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez, Capuano....

Seriously, all these guys are doing amazing

Currently, it's a little tougher to choose because there have been so much great pitching as of late because there are several great starters that have pitched well this year, yet Dickey is, without question, the leading candidate. Johan Santana has struggled since his no-hitter, Pelfrey is out (for the year, I think), and the back of the rotation has been spotty lately. Dickey, on the other hand, leads the NL in the pitching triple crown (wins, strikeouts, and ERA), and sans one bad start, he's been consistently excellent. He's the ace of the staff.

However, you can immediately scratch Stephen Strasburg off the list, for he's on a severely strict innings limit that will put him out of action before September.

Not much of a baseball fan but recently I started watching. Funny thing, I was expecting the batsmen to hit it out of the park on every ball but instead they play it like a cricket test match. :P

Joey Bats homers like a Bautista in the back-to-back-to-back homers in the 6th AND in the back-to-back homers in the 9th. I guess the 6th inning was a way for them to forget about those homers given to the Rangers eh?

w000 Prince Fielder HR Derby champ.

Nick Castellanos was the Futures Game MVP

so this means either Verlander or Cabrera is ASG MVP to complete the Tigers' sweep of the ASG :D

The All-Star Game is a joke. Between RA Dickey, the best pitcher in the NL, not getting the start, and Pablo Sandoval starting at third base over David Wright (thanks to Giants' fans spamming the online ballot), I don't know how it can ever be taken seriously.

I've watched some of the All-Star game, Justin Verlander gave up five runs in the very first inning. Afterwards, Matt Harrison gave up three more runs to make the game 8-0 going into the 8th inning. The game is not too entertaining since this is a blowout.

My thoughts on the ASG as an entity

Having it determine home field advantage in the WS, while it makes the game more interesting to watch, is lame. Another thing that goes hand in hand with that is the rule that every team needs to have at least 1 representative. I think that is weak. If I'm a WS contender, I don't want no Oriole/Royal/Pirate/Padre/Cub requirement filler coming up to bat in the 9th with 2 outs and bases loaded, or one of those requirement guys having to come on and pitch. If you're going to have a key paradigm of your league's championship decided with one game, then you better have ONLY the BEST players from both leagues playing in it.

Also fan voting is stupid. Stupid for every sport. Derek Jeter could miss the first 60 games of the season with a torn ACL and he'd get voted starter on his name alone.

If ASG determines home field:

No 1 player from each team quota

No fan voting

If ASG determines nothing and is just an exhibition game:

Have the 1 player from each team quota

Have fan voting

Actually it's Blue Jays @ Yankees. Last time I checked the Blue Jays didn't play at YANKEES STADIUM. ;) LOL just bustin your chops a little bit. I don't know what to think about the ASG. Basically I didn't like it very much. Those Royals fans treatment of Cano, kinda ruined the ASG for me. I don't even know how Cano got the worst treatment at the All Star Game. Were the Royals fans really upset over not getting Butler in the Home Run Derby? Cause I heard it had something to do with that.
