What did you think of characters before you were a brony?

Chances are your first experience with MLP:FiM wasn't sitting down and watching the show.

I know a lot of people got pulled in from seeing all the stuff posted about it on the internet, and so, many assumptions were made before we had seen the show.

For example, I've seen somepony who's first experience with the show were YTPMVs... and from the videos sampling bits from "Return to Harmony", they thought Fluttershy was the brat of the show, shoving a bucket on Twilight's head.

For me, I thought that Twilight was the only unicorn (I hadn't seen Rarity before I started watching the show) and I thought Fluttershy was a doctor, because I watched a youtube poop that used the clip when she was trying to take care of Celestia's Phoenix, dressed like a surgeon, calling for Angel to bring her different tools...

What about you ponies? Did you have any misconceptions about the characters in the show before becoming a brony?

The first character I knew, based on the avatar of a YT commenter I saw, was Applejack.

My initial impression of Applejack was "She has a pretty awesome hat"

I didn't have an opinion on them. I didn't know anything about the show before I watched it, let alone any of the characters. It's kind of hard to have a misconception if there's nothing to misconceive.

I know, I'm boring.

I didn't have an opinion of them. I thought they were just new My Little Pony toy releases.

All my life needed was a sense of someplace to go. I don't believe that one should devote his life to morbid self-attention. I believe that someone should become a person like other people.

I actually saw bits and pieces of the show while channel hopping before I learned about the fandom, so I did know a bit. From what little I saw, I'd figured Twilight was the smartypants, RD was the brash one, and Rarity did dresses. That's all I knew, so I applied the generic old personalities to them. Imagine my surprise when I actually sat down and watched the show!  :twi:

I surf a lot of internet forums, so my first impression of a pony was the scene from Winter Wrap-Up, where Twilight is trying to run away from those bats before running into a tree.

On one of the forums I used to frequent, someone made an "ABANDON THREAD" GIF with that scene, complete with Twilight running face first into the tree. From that scene, my first impression of any of the show's characters was, "Man, that purple pony is so stupid!"

Then I started watching the show, and boy was I wrong.

Watched a couple of PMV's before becoming a brony, could already tell that RD was excitable. After watching Amish Paradise starring AppleJack I was wondering if she was actually amish as I noticed the lack of technology in the show, thus I watched my first episode.

The first character I knew of was Rarity, I was first introduced to the show by seeing the clip in the diamond dogs episode (I forget what is was called) where Rarity starts crying over being called a mule. I must admit it did give me a good impression of the show and I remember saying to myself "wow that is good animation".

No matter how hard I try these ponies will simply never leave me.

I'd seen ponies around on the internet before and at cons, but I didn't pay too much attention - the ones I saw most were Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie, and a bit of Fluttershy. I didn't have any huge misconceptions about them really, except I thought that Pinkie would be more stereotypically "girly" because, y'know, pink and stuff.

I did, however, somehow have the impression that Steven Magnet/the sea serpent and Discord were the same character. I don't even know how that happened - my brain obviously just went "big dragon-type thing" and assumed they were the same, as SM didn't have that name in canon. So when I heard that Discord was a big villain in S2 before I saw it, I remember thinking that was weird because he didn't seem that "evil", he just wanted his moustache back

The only character whom I knew about before I became a Brony was Derpy Hooves.

Some of the girls in the "Off-topic" section in Minecraft forums were making posts about her.

I thought Derpy looked kinda cute and believe it or not that's actually what caused me to watch the show.

Warning! This might be fairly long. You might want to pass this by if you don't like long posts. But, if you do like a weird, interesting story then keep reading!

My first contact with anything having to do with MLP/FIM was through trolls.

Being the kind of guy who loves to explore - and who has the time to do it - I've spent a lot of time journeying all over the Internet and even, on one occasion, into the Deep Web. (Icky place! I do not recommend it!)

Well, years ago, it was furry spam. Everywhere! And I don't mean your average kind of cute'n'cuddly adorable little furry characters, I mean some really nasty stuff! (I cringe!)

I won't go into details (and don't ask) but it didn't take me long to get totally disgusted.

Then, about two or so years ago all this weird, and frequently disgusting, Pony-related spam started showing up all over the Internet and I mean everywhere!

Well, the furry prons was bad enough but this? I mean, some of the stuff I came across... Nevermind, you get the picture.

Okay, so, time passes. My disgust grows and I'm disliking anything pony-related more and more. That started growing into a real hatred for anything having to do with the show or its fandom.

At that time I was pretty well convinced that the whole of the MLP/FIM fandom was made up of mentally and emotionally ill, immature little manboy perverts and freaks who, like the furry crowd, spent all their time drooling (and worse) over cartoon animal porn.

But, then, I started encountering things on Youtube that slowly began to change my mind and caused me to rethink my attitude about this whole Pony thing.

Those things were fan-made videos such as Derpy Want Muffins (my favorite), G3 Scootaloo Meets G4 My Little Pony, Rapunzel Meets My Little Pony, Superman/Batman, ??? Meets My Little Pony, the Letupia version of Flutterbat,

and other fan made videos.

Of course I was reluctant at first but I started asking myself why was I hating on this and what was I hating on, anyway? So, with some reluctance and reservation I started watching those fan-made videos and I was not only surprised at how funny most of them were but how well they were made.

Much to my surprise I realized I liked them!

It was then that it began to dawn on me that, perhaps, what I thought was the fandom really wasn't so I started looking into fan sites.

The first few I found were, well... Not so great but then I found this site and began checking out the posts.

Within a few hours I felt I'd found the real fandom and, more than that, I felt like I was home.

Although I don't feel like I'm a full Brony yet that feeling grows a little more every day.

Thanks for reading.

My first exposure to FIM was watching a couple documentaries about bronies. I saw what the mane 6 looked like but didn't know much about their personalities aside from what little could be inferred from their designs. Applejack cought my eye and I said to myself "now there's a character I'll probably be able to relate to". I wasn't wrong.

I just thought they would be the horrifyingly stupid characters I remembered from my sister's MLP video. (The 1986 movie). Then I kept seeing moments of awesome and eventually I decided to check it out.

First character I've ever seen is Rainbow Dash in the famous PMV "You're Gonna Go Far Kid" . My opinion on her has almost never changed.

Same, this was my first 'exposure' to the brony community. That video started me off. ;p

My opinion was basically; she seems pretty cool.

My sisters used to have My Little Pony toys when we were kids. After we grew up I didn't think too much about them.

And lo and behold I had kids. I often download stuff from YouTube, iPlayer, etc for them to watch. I had read somewhere that the new My Little Pony series was supposed to be particularly good. So I downloaded some, and we watched them, and enjoyed them.

Prior to downloading and watching them, I didn't have any particular impression of the characters other than: "oh look, they're ponies".

Eh, that pink pony loves cakes.

Surprisingly, that first impression comes from the video "we are going for a ride"
