While I was looking at the armor in Castle Mane-ia, and I notice something about the armor. The muzzle piece of the helmets are pointed and curved, like a mare's, not blunt and straight, like a stallion's. With this observation, it seems that most, if not all, of the guards were females. Also, all of suits also have horns, giving the impression that they were all unicorns as well. This brings the question of when did they change from a female, singular race system to the male, multi-race system the currently have? I guessing shortly after the Nightmare Moon insentient, but feel free to give my your thoughts and theories.

Interesting! I never noticed the difference, I normally notice errors like speech, figures. o3o Anyways, my thoughts is that once Luna turned into Nightmare Moon, she needed minions. She transformed all of her army into Bat Ponies. *However they looked like stallions and pegasi, so Princess Celestia wouldn't notice her new powers so she can find a weakness and you know *cough* defeat her. ((I'm working on those parts ;)) Anyway... after that change, there was hardly many mares left due to Nightmare Moon turned most of them into her army, so Celestia recruited stallions, and it shortly later had an impact in recurition. Bassicallyy due to thats basically a story that I have work at, my theory is that there was a possibly shortage on mares, perhaps most of them were killed from a huge battle for example The Fall Of The Crystal Empire, or Nightmare Moon. So stallions were more in the army while mares ...got different jobs...?

This is a very good question actually. I just assumed there are a lot more mares than stallions in equestria so they would be easier to come by/ However it doesn't explain the sudden change.

In real life horse herds the stallion is the one responsible for the protection of the herd.

I guess they based it on this.

Well, let's keep in mind that that the display armor was likely for display-purposes only; IMO. As we see with the Canterlot guards, their armor is fairly open; not wholly-enclosed like we see with the armor from the ruined castle. In any case, I'd assume that the guards forms Celestia and Luna's youth had similar armor to the recent Canterlot guards.
