The Season 5 premiere may just be the best two-parter this show has ever put out if they can get a good storyline out of it. What I like the best about Starlight is that she is not only the antithesis of Twilight, but to all of the other villains this show has put out. The others have mostly sought to destroy harmony and have had loosely-defined motivations. This one seeks to implement an extremist interpretation of harmony; conformity, and has a motivation rooted in a common problem many of us go through in life. It really makes a story more interesting and more sophisticated when the villain is out to solve a real problem just as much as the heroes are, rather than just to satiate their own greed.

The concept of individuality really has been a pillar of Equestrian society since the show's beginning. However, since the last couple of seasons, it has begun to look as if Equestria is taking their nurture of individuality for granted and never questioning it. There could be possible downsides to cutie marks and the emphasis on "special talents". Now, it seems like we're finally going to see that notion challenged and get the all-important answer to the question "why?" As someone who likes speculating on how Equestria deals with negative self-identity, this is what I've been waiting for.

As for the Communist references, I don't think of this show as a direct commentary on Communism. Visual cues make the connection easy, however I think the deeper meaning is more applicable to today's society. If you think about it, many low-level jobs and especially our education system dissuade individuality. This is a harmful practice as it destroys self-confidence and may kill needed talents and creativity. If people have a negative self-identity, not knowing what they want to or can do, they suffer and anyone who would benefit from their unrealized or unrecognized talents will as well. This happens even in the Western world, in fact it happens in pretty much any society where too much emphasis is placed on the upper classes and their needs over the needs of the many. The fact that MLP is tackling this concept head-on is very welcome and just what many of us need.

Why can't brohoof you more times? This comment was wonderful.

I don't know why, but the first thing that came to my head was the song schism by tool. Anyways, this season is going to rule.

I was actually thinking about Subdivisions from Rush. Because it also talks about conformity.

I don't think communism with the "=", I think North Korea.

As for the non-spoiler that we've been waiting for, if that's not the cutie marks what is it?

No really, I'm really up for ideas.

I also thought more of North Korea.

I saw several tourism vids about this land and the people there are so unnaturally friendly to you, that it's kind of creepy.

So far we Know that Starlight Glimmer isn't your typical MLP 2 part episode villain

she is not some kind of demon, monster, chimera or even bent on global domination or destroying harmony (at least for now).

She has been stated to have "a different view on friendship" which is actually pretty interesting to think about as it implies that Starlight isn't evil but misguided or at a different viewpoint then the mane 6 are.  That in turn could produce some great conflict about what exactly is friendship and the question on what it means to be truly equal.  Such as if conformity and having no differences to abuse or express vs being yourself.  That in turn could offer an insightful moral that true equality in friendship means having to respect other's differences is what makes us all equal to each other.  That in turn having the Mane 6 and Starlight being at completely different ideologies about what friendship and equality are could really offer a lot to think about and discuss.

The fact that this is a distinct possible and if this is the case showcases just how much the show has evolved into being more complex, especially in the moral department compared to season one and how it's morals were basic such as: "don't look a gift horse in the mouth".

I have a feeling that Starlight Glimmer is going to be an interesting antagonist and that the opening 2 parter will be quite good to say the least.

Absolutely, Starlight Glimmer looks amazing, and I'm prepared for season 5 to be the absolute best season of all time. In fact every time I hear more news, I just think "it's to good to be true,". But it is TRUE  :D , and that's awesome.

Don't dis S1 though, that had some great morals, if slightly simpler ones.

I'm so pumped!!! I just recently watched the entire show and both movies within the span of 3 weeks so it's a short wait for me compared to most. I have not looked into any potential spoilers and have avoided them so thanks for that edit. I can't wait to see what they dig into this season!

Just curios on what day of the week do the episodes air? I work second shift mainly so I'm scared I wont experience them live :(

As far as i know, there will be a stream on EQTV that shows them live. There is a link above you, that leads to extranet. Just click on Equestria.tv and then on Equestria.tv stream and then you'll be all set.

Of course, we will discuss everything after the episode airs. We have a special section for Season 5 episodes, where we can discuss all the episodes.

I've said elsewhere that is more like Vonnegut's story Harrison Bergeron.  One thing I wonder.  How do Changelings react to this? Can they eat the = love?  As to being more in tune with Harmony.  When the castle sent them there which side was it helping?
