I'll wait and judge it when it comes out. We don't even really know what the plot is, but I doubt it's just going to be pointing at background characters for 22 minutes. I'm sure there's going to be some sort of story, and what that story is can justify the use of background characters or not.

 

And though background characters may be what they're saying are the stars, I'm pretty sure it's going to be more lower deck, as in supporting characters and some minor characters who did have lines and roles but weren't expanded on much too in addition to background ponies, since from the animatic in the teaser we see Mayor Mare being what seems like the minister for Cranky and Matilda's wedding, Stephen's there though only his head fits in, and it was mentioned I believe that Coco would be in the 100th episode.

My opinions on this are very torn. Background characters sounds great, but I want a very good, celebratory episode, not 22 mins of fanservice.

I'm actually quite curious to see what they'll do with it. I've read that the Mane 6 won't appear in it all, which sounds interesting enough. I don't think this is all fan pandering, either. I'm pretty sure the creators of the show have ideas in mind for those characters as well, and simply want to show them. It might destroy a lot of fanon, but who cares? I think this will be a very good episode because it's so different from what they usually do. Besides, a 100th ep special will be treated with respect, I think.

I dont think people should be so eager to call out "fanservice!" quite yet. Many shows have done this kind of thing before, The Simpsons and The Amazing World of Gumball come to mind. We have no evidence to suggest that this episode will consist of blatant pandering.

Citadel DLC for Mass Effect 3 was the most fanservice DLC I've ever seen. All fandom jokes, all memes, all major stuff that's ever been featured was there. And you know what? It was the best DLC in the history of videogames. Nothing could be more funny and entertainment than Citadel, plus if you're a hardcore fan, and got all the references and jokes, you're on the top of the world.

If they will be able to do the 100th episode with at least 10% quality of Citadel DLC, it'd be the best MLP episode ever created.

Well that would be weird if she appears in an episode dedicated to background ponies, but she doesn't say anything.

But I'll let give the source if there's one (because I'm just saying my opinion).

Depends on what they do with it:

 

Bad: Have an episode where the mane 6 leave, and then just cram as much internet and fanon references as possible in the audiences face. Just do EVERYTHING. Call out every background ponies names and give them speaking roles, give them their fanon personalities straight from the web, and do as much brony pandering as you possibly can. It ends with a giant laser fight and Derpy shouting out muffins.

 

Good: Put effort and time into this episode and make it a well written episode that could stand on it's own, even if the background ponies weren't there and it was just the mane 6. Use some fan personalities, but filter them out and alter them if nessercery so that they're appropriate for kids and can work in the context of the show. (For example, take out homosexuality between Vinyl and Octavia and Lyra and Bon Bon, and take out the human obsession for Lyra as it just wouldn't work in the show, but still make her a quirky oddball)

 

Also, don't be afraid to differ yourselves from fanon. As long as it's relatively close and the core personalities and names are there, then you can make a few changes if you want.

and Good =RR (but with ponies)?

 

I also don't mind my headcanon being blasted out of the water as long as it's done well.

I've seen bits of the sketching for the onehundreth episode, and it honestly looks good! Discord is bringing in one of his 'non pony friends', and lots of background ponies will be featured. I don't want much obsessing over Derpy, since I'm sort of done with that craze right now. But I hope many ponies are featured in a GOOD WAY.

Yeah, it's been confirmed that some of the fandom headcanons will not be featured in the episode. The homosexual relationships of Lyra/Bon Bon and Octi/Vinyl, plus, Dinky is Derpy's daughter can be forgotten about

So, it's come to my attention that Spike makes a split-second appearance at the very end of the animatic clip shown in this S5 preview. We may or may not have to brace ourselves for the potential reveal that this could be a Spike episode. One featuring BG characters in the foreground, but still.

 

On the one hand, if this turns out to be true, I'd be disappointed that the staff didn't take a bigger risk and just focus on the BG characters doing something while the Mane Six are away, because Just for Sidekicks has already done this with Spike. On the other hand, having a familiar character at the center of the story would not only help give the episode focus, but also give the audience a guide as we technically meet and really get to know the BG characters for the first time. Sure, some of them will be taking a page from the characterizations fans have given them, but we won't know which ones will be similar and which ones will be different. Their characterization is now in their hands. I just hope we get plent of time to know them.

 

Or maybe he'll just be a minor character and the BG ponies really will be getting most of the focus, and I'm just overthinking this.

 

Either way, I'm getting this out there now because the sooner anyone who may be disappointed with it comes to grips with it, the higher chance they'll have at enjoying the episode for what it delivers. I was let down when I first learned Equestria Games turned out to be more about Spike than the games, and that episode turned out to be one of my all-time favorites in the show so far. Let's see what Episode 100 has got in store for us.

Actually, those are sketches for two different episodes. The Discord episode is Episode 98, two episodes before the BG pony episode.
