music Who likes jazz?

Hey, guys. As probably no one here knows, I am a musician, primarily a trombonist. I dig jazz a lot and I'm wondering if anyone else around here does? Got any favorite tunes? Favorite instrumentalist or arranger? Do YOU play in a groups or just alone?

I personally am a sucker for JJ Johnson (tried to buy one a collection of his albums but accidently spent all of my money on MLP Comics... oops) and the arrangements of Neal Hefti, so basically anything Count Basie. How about you?

Jazz is amazing music, especially smooth jazz. Lots of people pass it off as sex music or elevator music but in my opinion its much more. Smooth Jazz is about passion, relief, love and calmness.; the loss of stress. I love listening to it on weekend or summer nights. It's helped me get over insomnia sometimes and makes me a thousand times calmer than any other type of genre, and I desperately need it because of the stress of work, friends and classes.

I prefer to listen alone but I have no shame in my love for it.

I don't really have a favorite artists, I can never remember names of artists but I can remember the tunes. Still, really talented people work on Smooth Jazz and its a very underrated genre.

I like all kinds of music, including Jazz! I particularly enjoy it for background music when I'm trying to relax or something.

Not to mention I enjoy Jazz incorporated with a few other genres especially.

But like all music, it really depends on the artist!

Humorously, the hardcore jazz guys (particularly bebop and big band players) have a burning passion against smooth jazz. For me it's sort of an "easier" version to feel than bebop or swing-like genres, it has softer edges and a more commercially viable sound.

I think there are truly some greats in the smooth jazz area, but for me it's almost as if it's not "raunchy" enough- too sweet (and a bit produced).

Of course, coming from someone like me who IS pretty deep inside my local jazz scene. Nice to hear about it this way, though... I haven't heard many good comments about smooth jazz!

Hi @colt_following! As this thread has to do with music, it will be moved to Media Discussion. :)
Threads relating to music/books/tv shows/movies/games go there, not General Discussion.

I like the classics myself. Miles Davis, Kind of Blue and Dave Brubeck, Take 5 are two favorites I play over and over.

YES. YES! YES!!! Those guys are utterly SO chill. Both Kind of Blue and Take Five were my true introductions into jazz.

Have you have Miles Davis' "Birth of the Cool"? It must be my all-time favorite album.

Jazz helps me sleep at night or just unwind whenever I'm feeling stressed. I really like it. It let's me close my eyes and imagine myself in serene surroundings, or just sitting on the couch in front of the fire. :squee: I have The No. 1 Jazz Album Ever on my iTunes which has me well covered. Great compilation.

I love classic jazz of all kinds. Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, etc. The people who gave the Jazz Age its name.

Amoral cynic with a bitchin' vocabulary.

Check out A Century of Song if you like music from before this millennium.

I haven't, but with a recommendation like that I'll have to check it out.

I'm very fond of jazz.  Much of my exposure has come from contemporary artists / composers; even the likes of Yoko Kanno, composer for the anime series "Cowboy Bebop" and "Darker Than Black."  I've got some Michel Petrucciani, Spyro Gyra, genre-benders The Flecktones, the standout Keiko Matsui, Paul Taylor, David Benoit, Paul Hardcastle, and others, and I own a number of "arranged" video game soundtracks done in a decidedly jazz vein.  I also enjoy ragtime; a precursor to jazz.

Funny enough I used to hate jazz, now it's my favorite type of music lol. I got into it through 2 best sisters play portal, that smooth jazz part of video made me laugh so I went and found more of that music.

I enjoy jazzy versions of video game tunes.  The "Rockman X Arranged" album is a long-time fave.

And the F-Zero arranged / jazz album was / is still amazing.
