Cloudsdale hosting the Equestria Games.

In Season Three, Episode 12, Games Ponies Play, Rainbow Dash's motivation for helping the Crystal Empire Host the Equestria Games is because when she was a Filly, Cloudsdale didn't get to host it.

 

Rarity: Didn't Cloudsdale host the Equestria Games one year? 

Rainbow Dash: No. Cloudsdale should have hosted the games one year. I'll never forget when we got the bad news.

Laurette: The Equestria Games go to... the city of Fillydelphia.

Young Rainbow Dash: NOOOOOOOOOOO!

 

But, that doesn't make sense. Cloudsdale is a Cloud city. Only Pegasi can enter it, so why would Cloudsdale ever be chosen as the Host city? How could they even Host it? Would they Mass produce Twilight's Cloud walking Spell? Or is there some other way that Ponies can walk on clouds that I'm missing?

Cloudsdale is mainly a giant weather factory.

Cloudsdale is a constant moveable city.

Hosting the games could impede the weather schedule.

There IS magic that can make Earths and Unicorns walk on clouds though- maybe they've got a mass-transformer machine... I feel like it'd look like one of those walk-thru metal detectors you see in airports.

Seems like it would take more effort and work to host it in Cloudsdale. Magic to allow Earth and Unicorn to walk on clouds. Transportation to bring all them up to the clouds. Extra security in case one of them falls off.

Maybe they would just whip up a lot of clouds together to make a massive stadium and make sure every non-pegasi has the cloud-walking spell on him and her and is refreshed at regular intervals (I'm guessing it does not last forever).

 

It would certainly cause the Pegasi authorities a lot of trouble making sure that the non-Pegasi can take part in the event but it is a little kid's show. No one thinks about the cost or why, just do it.

Considering Cloudsdale has been shown to be mobile, I'm guessing they would have moved the whole thing over a convenient facility (like the Rainbow Falls training area) and had the games hosted by Cloudsdale on a technicality.

Yep, I don't think that's impossible. They had anti-magic portals (in Equestria Games), I'm sure they can make cloud walking spell portals.

Several fan fics have pointed out that a ground city would have to build cloud facilities but Cloudsdale would either have to move near to a ground city & share or build all ground facilities including a lot of housing.  In short, Cloudsdale keeps getting passed because of practical reasons.  However, as it seems to be the main Pegasus city, there are probably a lot of Pegasi that don't like being left out.
