Why did they fix up the Castle of the Two Sisters?

A few episodes in season 4 had the Mane 6 fix up The Castle of The Two Sisters. But why? They didn't seem to be using it for a new hangout just....fixing it up. And after Power Ponies they just.....stopped showing it.

Twilight's obsessive nature + Rarity's need to design and beautify are more than enough for me to buy into it. Also, I think it was seen during Twilight's Kingdom when they Mane Six were recounting their 'Key Moments'. I could be wrong though.

I kinda wish that the idea wasn't dropped; it really felt like they were really gonna do something with it.

Granted, they did in Twilight's Kingdom, but...I couldn't help but feel like something was still missing...

There are still a few dangerous secrets hidden in the castle...(inspiration manifestation) and it would be wise to keep them from curious little dragons... besides, the tree of harmony is there.

I'm hoping they would make it into a place for new adventures. Keeping all it's rooms in mystery can be interesting. I guess it could have been their gathering place, but they got Twilight's Castle for that now.

I agree that it was probably a filler, but I wish they had used it as Twilight's Castle instead of the one that popped out of the ground like a giant purple flower. It would have been more interesting to have the darker castle, but the child audience probably prefers the newer one. Plus, the other design sells more toys, so yeah.

But in relevance to the topic, they probably wanted to use it as a hangout, so they wanted it to look nice. After Twilight's castle grew, they didn't really have a purpose for it anymore. But I suspect we will see it again this season.

I'm just waiting for the Celestia/Luna origin story episode, and hopefully the castle gets explained further as well.

Twilight's obsessive nature + Rarity's need to design and beautify are more than enough for me to buy into it. Also, I think it was seen during Twilight's Kingdom when they Mane Six were recounting their 'Key Moments'. I could be wrong though.

All valid points and in addition, Twilight has shown time and time again that she loves history--especially the history of Equestria at the time of its founding and the history of the ponies before Celestia and Luna's joint reign over the three races in the Castle of the Two Sisters. She has shown this with her love of Starswirl the Bearded, her reenactment of the events surrounding the union of the three races as Clover the Clever in "Hearth's Warming Eve", her love of reading about the history of the Crystal Empire in the season 3 premiere, and with how she read all she could about Griffon history after Gilda's visit.

Rarity in "Castle Mane-ia" also showed she has an interest in history as well, mainly the history of fabrics, fashions, and creative designs. She also demonstrated this again in "Testing Testing 1, 2, 3" with her keen knowledge about the Wonderbolt's uniforms and the materials used in their design.

As such both would love to work on a historical restoration project of such a monument to Equestria's grand history, both in Twilight's more overarching love of the subject and in Rarity's more specific interest in the history of materials and fashions that she could use to inspire her own projects. After said restoration, it would be best to leave the castle untouched to preserve it as it's shown to have been falling apart in "Castle Mane-ia". So they likely don't go to it as often except perhaps to marvel at its historicity and beauty, and for whatever knowledge and inspiration lays hidden in its architecture, its decor, and its library.

I imagine it was probably a left over from an earlier point in the scripting phase, I imagine the original idea was to have Twilight get the two sisters old castle but it was probably canned due to Hasbro wanting to sell the the toy of that tower where Twilight lives now (I forget it's name), it probably just stuck as it was an important plot setup for a couple episodes.

I guess it is like when you find a great classic car rusting in some junkyard and you want to restore it. I can't remember but I was pretty sure that the Mane 6 wanted to use the castle for Twilight before a new one came out from the ground.

There are a couple good reasons for restoring the castle.

-Continuity. Twilight is a princess, and needed a castle. They weren't expecting one to pop out of the ground, so they restored an old one. Even if the writers had Twilight's new home in mind that far in advance, it would seem odd that Twilight was the only princess not getting a proper castle.

-The library. There are countless books holding countless secrets. Organizing and retrieving them would be of great value.

-Rarity. We already know she was interested in the tapestries. I can see her enjoying the recovery, but more as a weekend project or source of inspiration than as a priority. Her business and passion for design give her plenty of other work.

-The Tree of Harmony. It's pretty damn important, they'd probably want a proper home for it that could be easily located and accessed rather than bushwhacking every time they wanted to check in on it.

-In honour of Luna. Nightmare Moon severly damaged the castle, and Celestia relocated. Fixing the castle could be a way to heal past scars, to get rid of Nightmare Moon's mark and honour Princess Luna's return.

Maybe it could have originally been planned out to be restored and used as Twilight's castle before the writers learned of Hasbro's marketing of her new castle playset that would have to bee advertised through Twilight's Kingdom.

So that lead them to abort the restoration arc that may have served a bigger purpose.

But that's just my theory.

I really thought that the Sisters' castle was going to end up being the Mane 6 clubhouse.  I think I would have liked that better than the current Castle Twilight, honestly.

I really wish they hadn't abandoned the story.  The most interesting parts of this show, to me, are the abandoned ideas we only see for two seconds.  I want them to finish cleaning the castle and do something with it, I want them to resolve Fluttershy's bat fang, I want the Ponytones to appear again...  But I digress.  If they had spent the entire episode just cleaning and restoring the castle, I would have liked that much better than what actually happened, to tell you the truth.

The mane six probably wanted to turn the castle into a clubhouse of sorts. I wish the show explored the arch a bit more, but instead Hasbro decided to give the mane six an ugly crystal castle. Honestly, I would prefer the characters to hang out there than the crystal castle, but whatever.

Maybe to preserve an important part of Equestrian history? I wonder why no one else bottered to restore it before in all those years, as the Mane6 and Spike have no problem in walking through the Everfree to reach it  :dash:

The only issue with the "Twilights Castle replaced that plot" theory is that entire seasons are plotted out and written in advance, long before they are animated and aired.  So it's not like they can just air half a season and change their minds... and if somehow it was just sprung up and forced, it would be well within their power to give some excuse reason so that subplot had closure.

That is a good question, and one I am not sure I have an answer for. The only thing I could think of is "because Celestia asked her too" or something to that effect, though I'm not sure if that was the case now that I think about it

most likely because they didn't know there'd be a castle emerging from the ground in the season finale....

That's been my thought, too. They were intending to make that Twilight's castle....but then the Library went kaboom and that new castle came out of the ground. Now Twi has her castle!

I too feel that the Castle of the two Sisters should have become twilight's Castle.  I also feel that the Golden Oak Library should have been re-created.  There are a number of ponies, (and Discord) who should have been able to manage that.  And since Twilight is able to disapperate (sp?) the distance between the Golden Oak and the Castle would have been no problem.

The new castle looks out of place to me.  And what do the citizens of Ponyville do for a library now?

Most likely the Two Sister's Castle would have been transformed into Twilight's new castle since it as directly under the Tree of Harmony and the box but Hasbro probably wanted to sell the new castle as Twilight's new home, which went at odds with her living in the Golden Oaks Library, and so they told the writers to move the castle and get rid of the Library.  The Two Sister's Castle scenes in the first couple of episodes were probably locked in and they couldn't get rid of it and so it just became a hanging plot thread.

Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end.

Been thinking about this recently as well. All of the reasons above seem to make some sense and that makes it less confusing to me, but I still wish some mention of it would happen, now it has been forgotten it seems. I love the idea of a Celestia/Luna origin story, that would make that castle relevant again for at least on episode. I loved the episodes involving the and now it apparently doesn't exist anymore. I don't mind it not be hugely prominent but a nod here and there to it would be nice.
