I just got back from the movie theatre, and thought it was great. Most of the jokes were spot-on, but I found the music (at least the main themes) to be a tad uninspired. One of my favourite jokes was the Breaking Bad reference.

I saw it today, and I loved it. I would probably say it's my favorite Disney film of the ones that have been released in the past 10-15 years (this is counting the ones I liked and the ones I didn't like). I was actually the only teen there that wasn't on a date. The rest of the crowd was parents and kids. A couple that was on a date went to the theater with me, but I didn't sit next to them.

One of my favourite jokes was the Breaking Bad reference.

During that scene in the movie, I was the first one to laugh when Walter and Jesse were mentioned, then a few more people laughed.

I liked the movie, I thought it was good. The animation was incredibly pretty and I really liked the characters, especially Judy, and I liked its morals but the second half of the film, without going into spoilers, ended up having elements that were either not explained enough or poorly implemented. This thread from gamefaqs sums up my issues: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/203-cartoons-and-animation/73464024 If you're going to be 99% on Rotten Tomatoes I expect it to be nearly perfect but it's far from it.

Still I love its world and its characters and I would love to see more of it. I'd like to see an animated series or a sequel or even an entire disney park attraction.

Edit: Oh hey, 100 posts.

Ok, here's my deal. People look to much into kids movies. Into any movies really. It says what it needs to, we don't need to pick it apart. It's difficult to keep everything consistent and together. As for the articles, some things are easily explainable. The "magic flowers" were shown very early, we just didn't know anything about them. The whole thing where Judy talked about biology yeah, makes sense, but the way she presented it made Nick mad. It was a bit of an overreaction, but people are different. The thing about "oh, now there's magic flower making them insane!" doesn't make sense. We were led to believe that it was biology that made them go savage because Mr. Otterton attacked the panther guy, and he later went savage. In reality, Bellwether had masterminded everything because of her mistreatment. Mayor Lionheart mistreated and disrespected her, and for all we know, so did other predators. She had power, and she used it to take over and get back at predators. It introduces another theme in that you should treat others with respect and kindness. It really deserves it's 99% score, and is my favorite movie of all time. It's theme sticks, it's other themes work, and it's a fun, enjoyable movie.

What I liked about Zootopia is that it shows that there are greater complexities to issues than meets the eye.  Like the scene where Nick buys the elephant-sized popsicle: him being turned away by the store because he's not an elephant looks like overt racism at first glance, but when he melts it down into smaller popsicles and makes an obscene profit---it shows that the situation is more complicated than that.  Of course, other scenes show that racism (or speciesism, as the case may be) is a legitimate problem too, so it's also not as simple as "stores should be able to do whatever they want based on species", either.

I like how it shows that complexity; real-life issues tend to be complex, and most presentations of those issues are oversimplified.  Zootopia, I think, did a good job avoiding the oversimplification pitfall.

I disagree. I think the movie was strong from start to finish. In fact, if anything, I think it got even better as it went on. I'll try to give my reasons as well as I can without giving away any major spoilers below.

The post you linked claims that Nick's reaction to Judy's assumptions halfway through the movie wasn't justified, which isn't true at all. There was a good reason to believe she was wrong. She was essentially reciting what she was told since she was a child without thinking of the harmful implications of what she was saying. That's a major slap in the face to Nick, who believed he had completely earned her trust up until that point. So yes, Nick's reaction was completely justified.

After that, the post states that the big reveal at near the end came "at the last minute out of nowhere", which is completely false. In actuality, it was an ongoing subplot throughout the movie. Remember the stolen "onions"? It wasn't "done sloppily and contrived", it was well-integrated into the story in such a way that you don't notice it until the Judy does (unless you're rewatching the movie, in which case, you can see all the subtle hints and details play out). This wasn't done to "force the message in your face" and wasn't the only thing keeping Judy's assumptions from being justified by a long shot. The message came into play when it needed to, like it should, and there were plenty of other reasons to disprove Judy's assumptions, like the one I mentioned earlier.

Long story short, the person who made that post which you linked to clearly didn't do his research. Either that, or he just didn't pay enough attention to the movie and missed a lot of important details. It's a shame, really, because you seem to like the movie like I do, and I agreed with a lot of what you said when you weren't letting someone else take over and do your thinking for you. Next time you come across someone else's opinions, really try to think it through and decide for yourself whether you agree with it or not.

I saw this movie recently, and absolutely loved it from start to finish! I would happily go and see it again right now; not only was it entertaining, but it tackled plenty of real-world issues (not that a flower making predatory animals go savage is a real-world issue). Everything about the movie was executed in such a way that no stone was left unturned, but nothing could be viewed as even slight overkill either. I mean, I felt sorry for Judy, and how she was being stereotyped and underestimated due to being a rabbit, but she wasn't being senselessly insulted constantly, which was realistic. Overall, I think Zootopia is just an awesome movie! :squee: And that animation! Stunning! The characters are all so loveable in many ways.

Those sloths though.

I took my daughter to see Zootropolis (as it's called in the UK, because reasons) and I can honestly say I haven't laughed so much in the cinema in a long time, it was a very good film indeed.

It managed to inject real world issues into the plot without beating you over the head with them, the humour was blatant enough for the kids without being infantile, and subtle enough for to keep the adults amused as well.  On top of all of that it was visually gorgeous to boot.

Given its huge level of success I definitely sense a Disney channel spin-off cartoon in the future.
